Detecting Suicide Risk In Adolescents And Adults In An Emergency Department: A Pilot Study, Katie N. Davis

Honors Projects

A pilot study was conducted to detect suicide risk in adolescents and adults presenting to an Emergency Department (ED) in the Midwest, as well as to test the reliability and validity of the 4-item Risk of Suicide Questionnaire (RSQ) developed by Horowitz, et al. (2001). Participants consisted of a convenience sample of 104 ED patients ranging in age from 12 to 82 regardless of chief complaint or psychiatric history. The RSQ was verbally administered to 39 adolescents (age 12 to 24) and 65 adults (over 25). Demographic data, chief complaint, and discharge diagnosis were also obtained. Psychometric analysis demonstrated an …

Specifying The Psychomotor Domain Of The Construct Of Nursing Competence, Joni L. Jones Dec 2002

Specifying The Psychomotor Domain Of The Construct Of Nursing Competence, Joni L. Jones

Dissertations

The measurement of an individual's predicted performance in his/her field is a requirement of many professions. The NCLEX-RN® is the measurement tool used to determine whether or not new graduates of registered nursing programs are competent to enter the profession. Although there are three domains of learning in nursing (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor) the only domain tested for licensure is the cognitive. Many factors contribute to the lack of testing in the psychomotor area. One of the major impediments is that the entry-level psychomotor domain for registered nursing has yet to be defined. The purpose of this study was to …

A Longitudinal Study Examining The Stability Of Occupational Stressors Identified By Nursing Home Administrators, Gay Lynne Andrucci-Armstrong

Health Services Research Dissertations

As a result of the ever changing and expanding role of the nursing home administrator in conjunction with the stricter legislation governing nursing facilities over the past decade and the graying of America, a study specific to this population was warranted. The purpose of this study is to determine the relative change in the self-reported occupational stressors of nursing home administrators over a five year period (December 1994 to June 1999) secondary to the increased regulatory climate of the nursing home industry.

This study was carried out in three phases and included all practicing nursing home administrators in Virginia. Phase …

Living In A House Of Cards: Family Experiences With Long-Term Childhood Technology Dependence, Maureen O'Brien Feb 2001

Living In A House Of Cards: Family Experiences With Long-Term Childhood Technology Dependence, Maureen O'Brien

College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications

Families' experiences of providing long-term home care for the child who is technology dependent were explored via parental interviews. Families identified frequent change, uncertainty, and unpredictability in their lives, a phenomenon described as "living in a house of cards." Attempts to increase stability involved the use of vigilance, advocacy, and reframing. Areas of challenge, change, and growth included making sense of life, managing daily life with technology, and maintaining a functioning family. Increased understanding of family experiences with long-term childhood technology dependence can provide nurses with additional strategies for providing optimal care to this population.

Quality Of Life In A Heart Failure Population, Diane S. Rexford

Masters Theses

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to identify what impact nursing approaches had on quality of life over time in a heart failure population. The sample was those patients who were receiving home care for heart failure.

The theoretical framework was the King theory of goal attainment. This secondary analysis used data from the study by Dr. Kay Setter Kline, Home Care Outcomes for Heart Failure: A Test of Two Nursing Interventions. The specific tools utilized were a demographic tool and the Ferrans and Powers Quality of Life Index: Cardiac Version III. The subjects received nursing approaches from graduate …

Mental Health In Oldest-Old Adults: An Investigation Of Self-Transcendence, Marsha Luchtman Harrison Jan 2000

Mental Health In Oldest-Old Adults: An Investigation Of Self-Transcendence, Marsha Luchtman Harrison

Masters Theses

This study explored Reed’s theory of self-transcendence as a potential developmental resource and correlate of well-being within the long term care population. Self-transcendence is a healthy maturation process of expanding one’s conceptual boundaries inwardly through increased self-understanding; outwardly through investing in relationships with others and the environment; and/or temporally by integrating perceptions of one’s past and future in a way that enhances the present. A descriptive correlational research design examined the level of self-transcendence and the relationship of self-transcendence to depression among nursing home residents. The sample of 51 oldest-old adults ranged from 80 to 103 years old.

Participants were …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Home Care Interventions On The Self-Care Agency And Hospital Readmission Rate Of Patients With Congestive Heart Failure, Patricia K. Rau Jan 2000

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Home Care Interventions On The Self-Care Agency And Hospital Readmission Rate Of Patients With Congestive Heart Failure, Patricia K. Rau

Masters Theses

Congestive heart failure (CHF) is prevalent and patients with CHF incur costly hospital readmissions. It is crucial to reduce rehospitalizations and improve self-care in these patients. This blind experimental study based on Dorothea Orem’s self-care deficit theory evaluated two nursing interventions provided to 49 home care patients with CHF from 42 to 94 years of age in western Michigan. The study results were drawn from a larger longitudinal study in progress by researcher Dr. Kay Setter-KIine, RN. PhD. One group received supportive-educative interventions and the other received placebo interventions. The study sought to determine if supportive-educative nursing interventions improved medication …

The Influence Of Support Systems And Internal System Resources On Family Well-Being Of Caregivers Of A Depressed Family Member, Diane K. Richardson Jan 2000

The Influence Of Support Systems And Internal System Resources On Family Well-Being Of Caregivers Of A Depressed Family Member, Diane K. Richardson

Masters Theses

Health professionals are interested in families who have a high level of well-being in spite of coping with the difficulties related to caring for a depressed elderly family member at home. The Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation provided the conceptual framework to explore the hypothesis of a positive relationship between family social support and family well-being, and family internal system resources and family well-being. Thirty caregivers volunteered and were interviewed in their homes using the Family Crisis Oriented Personal Scale (F-COPES), the Family Hardiness Index (FHI), and the Family APGAR. Although weak, positive correlations were noted for …

Orchestrated Synergism: The Nurse-Leader As Facilitator In Collaborative Caring, Nancy C. O'Rourke Jan 2000

Orchestrated Synergism: The Nurse-Leader As Facilitator In Collaborative Caring, Nancy C. O'Rourke

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Little is known of the way that nurses' roles have evolved within a hospital setting in which efficient and affective interventions include caring for sicker patients. The emergence of the Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) is one role that nursing developed to participate in an interdisciplinary collaborative team approach to caring for sicker patients.

This qualitative study examined the exemplary role of eleven PCCs who practice in a regional nonprofit medical center. Research methodologies included interview, non-participant observation, and analysis of historical data. Interview questions were developed from the literature review on collaboration, caring, expertise, communication, and knowing the patient. Cognitive …
