Breastfeeding Support In Your Pocket: Evaluating The Impact Of A Mobile App On Maternal Success, Maygan Brandt
Breastfeeding Support In Your Pocket: Evaluating The Impact Of A Mobile App On Maternal Success, Maygan Brandt
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: Breastfeeding has well-known benefits for both the nursing infant and the birthing parent. It bolsters the newborn immune system, and reduces the risk of future health conditions in both parties. Due to these advantages, several health organizations internationally recommend exclusive breastfeeding until 6 months of age. However, only a fraction of infants in the United States meet this goal each year. Improved rates and duration of exclusive breastfeeding will lead to better long-term health outcomes for patients. The use of smartphone applications for breastfeeding education and support has not been thoroughly researched. Objective: This thesis explores the feasibility of …

Garden-Based Nutrition Education May Lead To Increased Dietary Knowledge In Low Income Hispanic School Children, Larry Bui
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: Childhood obesity is a pressing public health concern in the United States, with rates continuing to increase in recent years. This problem disproportionately affects Latino children as well as those from low socioeconomic status. It is well established that nutrition knowledge deficiencies and resulting poor dietary habits are some of the most common contributing factors to childhood obesity. Garden-based nutrition education programs have been introduced to remedy this knowledge deficit; however, a gap remains regarding whether this model can be viable for low-income, culturally diverse populations.
Aim: This literature review investigates the importance of diet in reducing childhood obesity …
Effects Of Menopause On Coronary Artery Disease, Angelica Gonzales
Effects Of Menopause On Coronary Artery Disease, Angelica Gonzales
Nursing | Senior Theses
Menopausal women, 40 to 60 years old, have an increased risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) when they experience hormonal changes. Which then can lead to unwanted cardiac events. Within the literature review of this paper, it was found that there are factors of menopause that may further increase the risk of coronary artery disease in menopausal women. Such factors include whether a woman underwent surgical or natural menopause and the timing when menopause began. Additionally, within the review, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was explored to determine whether the possible intervention can decrease the progression and risk of developing …

Nursing Education And Comfort Level In Caring For Patients With Eating Disorders, Jaylyn E. Jewell
Honors Theses and Capstones
Nurses are integral to providing care to patients with eating disorders, who often present to the generalized hospital setting related to physical complications from their disorder. Despite the vital role nurses play, a lack of education is cited. This project sought to assess knowledge on eating disorders of nurses at a local hospital through dissemination of a survey. A total of n=18 responses were gathered. Results supported the fact that many nurses have received inadequate education on eating disorders, and consequently have low knowledge and competency in the care of these patients. This project seeks to identify this lack of …

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Postpartum Depression And Suicide Prevention In Asian Women, Emily J. Tan
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Postpartum Depression (PPD) remains a substantial contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. One in seven women experience PPD, especially among Asian Americans because of the stigma surrounding the discussion of mental health which is often overlooked and misdiagnosed. One significant repercusssion of untreated PPD is the risk for suicidal ideation, which is the second leading contributor of mortality during the postnatal stage (Carlson et al., 2024).
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) consists of relaxation exercises, stress-reduction techniques, pain management strategies and effective problem-solving strategies. CBT takes place in various settings, including mental health clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, and group therapy (National …

Advancing School Nursing Practice: A Novel Approach To Screening For Gastrointestinal Disorders In Children, Ashley Bunting, Isabella Cavlan
Advancing School Nursing Practice: A Novel Approach To Screening For Gastrointestinal Disorders In Children, Ashley Bunting, Isabella Cavlan
Nursing | Student Research Posters
California schools currently only screen for vision and hearing, leaving many other health concerns unaddressed. Among these, gastrointestinal (GI) health is particularly significant, as digestive disorders can lead to severe consequences, like malnutrition and stunted growth. By incorporating routine GI screenings, school nurses can promote the early detection of disease, allowing for timely intervention and improved health outcomes in children.
Based on existing literature, we have developed a novel pediatric GI screening tool for school nurses to use in routine screenings, presented below.

Whole Foods Diet On Cognitive Functions In Children From Low-Income Families With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Jasmine Le
Nursing | Student Research Posters
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder that has become increasingly prevalent in adolescents worldwide. This disorder often impairs academic performance, emotional regulation, and ability to navigate daily tasks effectively. It usually persists from childhood to adulthood (Hemamy et al., 2021).
Although conventional treatments such as medication and therapies are used for symptom management, many low-income families do not have the resources or education to access medical help, which may lead them to seek alternative treatments. Emerging research suggests that modifying diet to incorporate whole foods, foods rich in essential nutrients and minutely processed foods, may play a major role …

Impact Of An Education Program On Screening For Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Lauren Rucker
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has the potential for multiple complications which include non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The American Diabetes Association (ADA) updated its guidelines recommending screening of patients with T2DM for NAFLD (ADA, 2023). Screening is prompted by the increased incidence of NAFLD in patients with T2DM. Approximately 70% of people with T2DM suffer from NAFLD which can progress to hepatic steatosis or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) (ADA, 2023). NALFD is a common diagnosis leading to the need for liver transplantation (Alkhouri et al., 2020). This project aims to determine if an education program for primary care providers and …

Enhanced Neuroprotection And Neuropromotion In Extremely Premature Infants Through Mindful Hands-On Care And Increased Family Involvement, Kristen Sergott
DNP Scholarly Projects
Background: Medical breakthroughs including antenatal corticosteroids and exogenous surfactants have improved survival in extremely premature and extremely low birth weight (EP-ELBW) infants. Currently, babies as young as 22 weeks’ gestation are being actively resuscitated and provided with intensive care in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) around the world. As a consequence of premature delivery, fragile and immature newborns are at risk for significant morbidities affecting their multiple organ systems. Additionally, such infants encounter neurodevelopmental trauma induced by recurrent stressful experiences ubiquitous to the NICU. Postnatal stress contributes to alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and is associated with alterations in …
