The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the self-described understanding and experiences of mothers, regarding goal setting for their preschool children. Narrative Inquiry was used to explore mothers' experiences with goal setting. A purposive sample of mothers with children in a Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten program were recruited from the central …

The Effect Of Breastfeeding And Rooming-In Care On Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Rachel Boyer, Lindsay Gal, Mahaylie Cline

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Concurrent with a rise in opioid abuse during pregnancy is an increase in the number of babies born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). Despite this crisis, no single treatment has been identified for NAS. This paper sought to analyze and synthesize research evaluating the effectiveness of breastfeeding and rooming-in care on the need and length of pharmacologic treatment and length of hospital stay for neonates with NAS. Twenty-six peer reviewed research articles published between 2006 and 2017 were selected from PubMed and CINAHL for analysis. The studies focused on neonates with NAS born to mothers addicted to opioids or undergoing …

The Effect Of Complementary Therapies On The Treatment Of Chemotherapeutic Induced Nausea And Vomiting: A Systematic Review, Kailyn Sickel, Mary Barrett, Abigal Siegenthaler

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Chemotherapy is one of the most prevalent treatment options for cancer patients, but a major side effect of this treatment, chemotherapeutic induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), can often be debilitating and problematic for patients. The goal of this systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness of complementary therapies in reducing CINV in adult oncology patients. A total of 20 studies were reviewed of adult populations that received standard antiemetic care, with each study failing to yield the same results upon evaluating the effectiveness of complementary therapies on patients’ CINV. The complementary therapies studied included ginger therapy, acupressure, acupuncture, guided imagery …

Intensive Care Unit Nurse Education To Reduce Sepsis Mortality Rates, Corina Meade Jan 2018

Intensive Care Unit Nurse Education To Reduce Sepsis Mortality Rates, Corina Meade

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sepsis causes major health care problems in the United States, resulting in long hospitalizations, complications, and even patient death. Lack of nursing knowledge regarding sepsis signs and symptoms is a significant problem at a hospital in the northeast. Local hospital data showed a high patient mortality rate for patients diagnosed with sepsis. The purpose of this project was to develop an educational module on sepsis for intensive care nurses. The educational module was developed using current sepsis evidence-based guidelines. The practice-focused question for the project asked whether an educational module on sepsis would increase the intensive care nurse's knowledge on …

The question addressed in the project was: …

Health Literacy As A Measure To Reduce Cost, Improve Health And Access, Vivian Dee Jan 2018

Health Literacy As A Measure To Reduce Cost, Improve Health And Access, Vivian Dee

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The United States dedicates greater than 17% of its gross national product to healthcare. This percentage is expected to go up to 20% by 2018. Despite the high cost of care, the health care system remains inefficient and ineffective. Barriers include reduced access to care related to low health literacy. Complicating low health literacy is the high readability score of patient education materials. The high readability score is in part due to tools that are not standardized and measure different aspects of education materials creating varying readability scores. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to adopt a tool, …

Midwives’ Knowledge Of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative In Uganda, Jaliah Namutebi, Hanifah Nakanwagi, Leila Naluyima, Grace Edwards Jan 2018

Midwives’ Knowledge Of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative In Uganda, Jaliah Namutebi, Hanifah Nakanwagi, Leila Naluyima, Grace Edwards

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) is a worldwide programme well known to midwives globally for supporting the initiation of successful breastfeeding. In low resource countries, initiation of breastfeeding immediately after birth would help to reduce neonatal complications such as infection. Knowledge of the 10 steps is critical for midwives in developing countries, yet our research in Uganda suggested that midwives’ knowledge is poor, despite a commitment at government level. There is a disconnect between policy and practice which must be addressed to ensure that midwives give standardised advice to new mothers to ensure successful and exclusive breastfeeding. This is …

Introduction To Special Issue By Guest Editor, Reimund Serafica, Reimund Serafica Jan 2018

Introduction To Special Issue By Guest Editor, Reimund Serafica, Reimund Serafica

Nursing Faculty Research

Nurses are masters at multitasking—that is performing several nursing interventions simultaneously during a patient encounter. While the new technologies such as smart pumps, bar-code medication, administration systems, electronic health records (EHRs), wearables, and smartphones being introduced into our practice environments are designed to increases efficiency, promote safety, and streamline the work of nursing, we also need to see what is current and emerging in the research arena. We need to continue to seek new evidence-based practice to care effectively for the Asian/Pacific Islander populations and promote a healing environment while incorporating the advantages and efficiencies that technologies provide.
