Popular Music In Geographical Analyses, Lily Kong
Popular Music In Geographical Analyses, Lily Kong
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
As an area of geographical inquiry, popular music has not been explored to any large extent. Where writings exist, they have been somewhat divorced from recent theoretical and methodological questions that have rejuvenated social and cultural geography (see, for example, Cosgrove and Jackson, 1987; Jackson, 1989; Cosgrove, 1989; 1990; Anderson and Gale, 1992; Bames and Duncan, 1992). In what follows, I will first discuss the reasons for geographers’ relative neglect of popular music …

Scottish And Irish Elements Of Appalachian Fiddle Music, Matthew S. Emmick
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This paper is designed to serve as a general introduction to the topic and is not meant to be a definitive resource. The ideas presented here deal with general characteristics which serve as a basis for comparison of the three fiddle styles. A more in-depth study which examines stylistic traits peculiar to small geographic regions within Scotland, Ireland, and Appalachia is needed to give a more complete picture of the Celtic influence on the fiddle traditions of the Southern mountains.

Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Opera Sappho, A Critical Examination, Fiona Campbell
Peggy Glanville-Hicks' Opera Sappho, A Critical Examination, Fiona Campbell
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Over the past ten years there has been a considerable amount of renewed interest in the life and work of Australian-born composer Peggy Glanville-Hicks who wrote five operas and a substantial body of chamber music. Although most of her career as a composer was accomplished abroad, her works were a significant contribution to the development of Australian opera. There is a growing body of literature written about Peggy Glanville-Hicks, but nothing substantial has been written about her last great work, Sappho.
