Improvisation In Latin Dance Music: History And Style, Peter L. Manuel Jan 1998

Improvisation In Latin Dance Music: History And Style, Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

Latin dance music constitutes one of the most dynamic and sophisticated urban popular music traditions in the Americas. Improvisation plays an important role in this set of genres, and its styles are sufficiently distinctive, complex, and internally significant as to merit book-length treatment along the lines of Paul Berliner's volume Thinking in Jazz (1994). To date, however, the subject of Latin improvisation has received only marginal and cursory analytical treatment, primarily in recent pedagogical guidebooks and videos. While a single chapter such as this can hardly do justice to the subject, an attempt will be made here to sketch some …

Chutney And Indo-Trinidadian Cultural Identity, Peter L. Manuel Jan 1998

Chutney And Indo-Trinidadian Cultural Identity, Peter L. Manuel

Publications and Research

Since the early 1980s Indian diasporic communities have attained sufficient size, affluence, self-awareness and generational distance from South Asia to have created a set of popular music styles that are autonomous and distinctive rather than strictly derivative of Indian models. While the bhangra music of British Punjabis has attracted some scholarly and journalistic attention, chutney, a syncretic IndoCaribbean popular music and dance idiom, is little known outside its own milieu. This article constitutes a preliminary socio-musical study of chutney.

A Study Of Ideological Change In Reggae Music From 1971 To 1993, William H. Stanley Dec 1997

A Study Of Ideological Change In Reggae Music From 1971 To 1993, William H. Stanley

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to see if the reggae music that became popular in the United States was ideologically different from the reggae that originated in Jamaica. The hypothesized change was derived from a model developed by Humphrey Regis (1994, 1988) labeled “cultural domination by re-exportation”. It was determined that early reggae music and the Rastafarian religion had very similar ideologies. The change within reggae music was measured against the Rastafarian belief system.

A content analysis of twenty-five songs was undertaken. The method of doing ideological analysis of the reggae lyrics was derived from Cormack (1992). The sample …

The Black Church: The 'Cocoon' For The Black 'Butterfly' And The African-American Music Idiom, Hubert Walters Jun 1997

The Black Church: The 'Cocoon' For The Black 'Butterfly' And The African-American Music Idiom, Hubert Walters

Trotter Review

An interesting phenomenon takes place in the world of nature when the larvae of the Monarch butterfly goes through the period of metamorphosis in the protective cover of the cocoon, and emerges as one of the most beautiful butterflies in North America. This phenomenon seems to be an appropriate metaphor to use in our discussion of the African-American Music Idiom. This idiom was developed and nurtured in the "cocoon" of the Black Church, while undergoing the "metamorphosis" of slavery, second-class citizenship, and segregation and emerge as the beautiful Black musical, "Butterfly," which stands at the very foundation of the only …

Batuko And Funana: Musical Traditions Of Santiago, Republic Of Cape Verde, Susan Hurley-Glowa May 1997

Batuko And Funana: Musical Traditions Of Santiago, Republic Of Cape Verde, Susan Hurley-Glowa

School of Music Dissertations and Theses

"Batuko and Funana: Musical Traditions of Santiago, Cape Verde Islands" is primarily based on an ethnographic survey emphasizing music and culture I conducted with a people of African descent living in Santiago, one of the Cape Verdean islands. This group of people is informally referred to as the Badius. I undertook the field research for the project in Cape Verde in June and July, 1991 and from October 1992 through August 1993. Before, between, and after those trips I did additional field research with people from Santiago living in the extensive Cape Verdean communities of Southern New England.

In this …

Popular Music In A Transnational World: The Construction Of Local Identities In Singapore, Lily Kong Apr 1997

Popular Music In A Transnational World: The Construction Of Local Identities In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

As an area of geographical inquiry, popular music has not been explored to any large extent. Where writings exist, they have been somewhat divorced from recent theoretical and methodological questions that have rejuvenated social and cultural geography. In this paper, I focus on one arena which geographers can develop in their analysis of popular music, namely, the exploration of local influences and global forces in the production of music. In so doing, I wish to explore how local resources intersect with global ones in a process of transculturation. Using the example of English songs by one particular songwriter and artiste …

Merengue: Dominican Music And Identity, Paul Austerlitz Jan 1997

Merengue: Dominican Music And Identity, Paul Austerlitz

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Merengue—the quintessential Dominican dance music—has a long and complex history, both on the island and in the large immigrant community in New York City. In this ambitious work, Paul Austerlitz unravels the African and Iberian roots of merengue and traces its growth under dictator Rafael Trujillo and its renewed popularity as an international music.

Using extensive interviews as well as written commentaries, Austerlitz examines the historical and contemporary contexts in which merengue is performed and danced, its symbolic significance, its social functions, and its musical and choreographic structures. He tells the tale of merengue's political functions, and of its class …

The Relationship Between Musical Behavior, Holistic Living, And Perceived Delinquency In Adolescents, Janice S. Schreibman Apr 1996

The Relationship Between Musical Behavior, Holistic Living, And Perceived Delinquency In Adolescents, Janice S. Schreibman

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between musical behavior, holistic living, and self-perceived delinquency in adolescents. One hundred thirty-seven ninth-grade students from two Detroit area high schools were selected for this study. All participants completed two surveys — an adapted version of the Holistic Living Inventory (HLI) (Stoudenmire, Batman, Pavlov & Temple, 1985), and surveys developed by the researcher to measure involvement in music and self-perceived level of delinquent behavior.

A three-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed there were no significant differences between the adolescents' level of involvement in music, the degree to which they practiced …

"Ornamental" Neumes And Early Notation, Timothy J. Mcgee Jan 1996

"Ornamental" Neumes And Early Notation, Timothy J. Mcgee

Performance Practice Review

RILM abstract: "A comparison of the "ornamental" neumes in the earliest notation with theoretical statements about their execution shows a close relationship between the shape of the neumes and the intended sound. This suggests that one of the primary purposes of the earliest notation was to transmit information about the performance of vocal gestures and nuances that were unfamiliar to the northern Europeans."

The resulting annotated bibliography lists twenty-two resources with critical evaluations of use to music teachers and library media specialists.

The Triumph Of Timelessness Over Time In Hindemith's "Turandot Scherzo" From The Symphonic Metamorphosis Of Themes By Carl Maria Von Weber, Gene H. Anderson Jan 1996

The Triumph Of Timelessness Over Time In Hindemith's "Turandot Scherzo" From The Symphonic Metamorphosis Of Themes By Carl Maria Von Weber, Gene H. Anderson

Music Faculty Publications

Hindemith's title of his four-movement von Weber suite of 1943 poses a problem. The composer's characteristic reticence about his sources delayed their documentation for some twenty years, whereupon it was found that the Symphonic Metamorphosis was based, not only on themes, but on complete pieces. Rather than "thematic transformation," the "metamorphosis" of the title would thus be more accurately regarded as "recomposition," in which changes of tone system, timbre, harmony, rhythm, and form, in addition to the melody itself, transform every level and component of the original composition's structure. This study attempts to demonstrate how Hindemith achieves such a metamorphosis …

Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong Jan 1996

Popular Music And A Sense Of Place In Singapore, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper illustrates how popular music written, produced, and performed by Singaporeans provides a means through which the culture and society of Singapore may be understood. Music with English language text conveys a sense of place and reflects a distinctively Singaporean spirit and identity. The paper examines four themes: the portrayal of Singapore's multiracial population which reflects a unique cultural synthesis; the Singaporeans' concept of urbanity, manifested as the simultaneous attraction and repulsion towards the city and the desire for nature and the rustic; the distinctive social engineering in Singapore; and the way in which global issues are imported into …

The Invention Of "African Rhythm", Kofi Agawu Oct 1995

The Invention Of "African Rhythm", Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

"African ryhthm" was invented in the 1950s when, thanks to pioneering research by the Reverend A. M. Jones, Alan Merriam, Gilbert Rouget, Erich von Hornbostel, and John Blacking, among others, "African music" was construed as an essentially rhythmic phenomenon. Three decades and a sizable body of empirical research later, it is easy to see that an overriding ideology of difference (between "Africa" and the "West") motivated these early efforts. This essay reinvents "African rhythm" not by denying its own ideological construction but by engaging in an imaginary dialogue with earlier researchers in an effort to concretize that which was missing …
