Three Violin Sonatas By Twentieth Century Mexican Composers: An Alternative To The Standard Violin Literature With Pedagogical Application, Martha Placeres

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The project "Three Violin Sonatas by Twentieth Century Mexican Composers: an Alternative to the Standard Violin Literature with Pedagogical Application" has as its objectives to introduce violin music by Mexican composers to the community of the Rio Grande Valley, to demonstrate how these works can become part of the standard violin repertoire, and to develop pedagogical strategies for teaching these pieces.

To start this project, it was necessary to choose and incorporate the following composers: Manuel Maria Ponce Cuellar because he is the most known and prolific composer in Mexico and also well-known around the world; Blas Galindo Dimas because …

Information Delivery On Mobile Devices Using Contour Icon Sonification, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2005

Information Delivery On Mobile Devices Using Contour Icon Sonification, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper examines the use of musical patterns to convey information, specifically in the context of mobile devices. Existing mechanisms (such as the popularity of the Morse code SMS alert) suggest that the use of musical patterns on mobile devices can be a very efficient and powerful method of data delivery. Unique musical patterns based on templates known as Contour Icons are used to represent specific data variables, with the output rendering of these patterns being referred to as a Sonification of that data. Contour Icon patterns mimic basic shapes and structures, thus providing listeners with a means of categorising …

"You Better Work": Underground Dance Music In New York City By Kai Fikentscher, Eliot Bates Jan 2005

"You Better Work": Underground Dance Music In New York City By Kai Fikentscher, Eliot Bates

Publications and Research

You Better Work!: Underground Dance Music in New York City is arguably the first ethnography of electronic dance music culture; it is also one of the first ethnomusicologically-influenced monographs on mediated dance music. Kai Fikentscher deftly avoids the wealth of music industry genre tags (such as "deep house" or "two step garage") that plague many writings on electronic dance music, instead focusing on a specific dance community in New York City which began its social dance practice in the days of disco and continued the practice well into the 1990s. His study took place over the course of thirteen years, …

Canons In Harmony, Or Canons In Conflict: A Cultural Perspective On The Curriculum And Pedagogy Of Jazz Improvization, Kenneth E. Prouty Jan 2004

Canons In Harmony, Or Canons In Conflict: A Cultural Perspective On The Curriculum And Pedagogy Of Jazz Improvization, Kenneth E. Prouty

Research & Issues in Music Education

This essay examines how jazz educators construct methods for teaching the art of improvisation in institutionalized jazz studies programs. Unlike previous studies of the processes and philosophies of jazz instruction, I examine such processes from a cultural standpoint, to identify why certain methods might be favored over others. Specifically, jazz education is treated as a fusion of two distinct historical and cultural forces: those of musical academia, and of the jazz community. I argue that methods of teaching improvisation reflect a dual identity, in which these two cultural traditions sometimes exert an uneven influence upon the learning environment. Improvisational curricula, …

Joseph Cooper Walker, Esq. (C. 1761-1810), A Forgotten Irish Bard: A Dissection Of His Advertisement As A Map To His Melodies, Hilary Brady Morris Jan 2004

Joseph Cooper Walker, Esq. (C. 1761-1810), A Forgotten Irish Bard: A Dissection Of His Advertisement As A Map To His Melodies, Hilary Brady Morris

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

In conducting preliminary research for my undergraduate honors thesis, I discovered a two-volume publication in Mullins Library at the University of Arkansas, The Historical Memoirs of the Irish Bards (1818) by Joseph Cooper Walker, Esq. (c. 1761-1810). It held a variety of information on the music and poetry of ancient Ireland. What interested me most was the collection of melodies at the end of the first volume. Looking at overviews of Irish music collection, I saw little mention of Walker and his Irish Bards. Upon further investigation, I found that the first edition of his book (1786) contained only fifteen …

An Ethnoarchaeomusicological Investigation Of Highland Guatemalan Maya Dance-Plays, Mark Harold Howell Jan 2004

An Ethnoarchaeomusicological Investigation Of Highland Guatemalan Maya Dance-Plays, Mark Harold Howell

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Instrumental music played on two valveless trumpets and a wooden slit-drum currently accompanies the highland Guatemalan Maya dance-play Rab'inal Achi. These two instrument types are known from the Prehispanic record and have been associated with the play since its first mention in the mid-nineteenth century.

The script of the Rab'inal Achi is considered by many scholars to have Prehispanic roots. The possibility that its accompanying music also originated in Precolumbian times is the impetus behind my study. To explore this possibility I apply ethnoarchaeomusicological research methods, incorporating data supplied by iconology-iconography, ethnographic analogy, history, archaeology, and music analysis. Ethnoarchaeomusicological …

The Organ Works Of Fela Sowande: A Nigerian Organist-Composer, Godwin Simeon Sadoh Jan 2004

The Organ Works Of Fela Sowande: A Nigerian Organist-Composer, Godwin Simeon Sadoh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Fela Sowande (1905-1987) has a huge compositional output including orchestral and vocal works. However, his organ music outnumbered the totality of his compositions. His organ pieces represent a truly intercultural music in which distinct tripartite cultural idioms are evident—Nigerian, African American and European. Works of this nature serve as creative source materials for aspiring composers, performers, scholars, music educators, and students in Africa and the world. This composer, folklorist, and music educator was born into a well-known music family in Nigeria. He was active in radio broadcasting, Yoruba folklore and mythology, indigenous music research, Nigerian art music, performance, orchestral conducting, …

Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle Jan 2003

Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this study is to develop a four-mallet marimba technique that utilizes alternation within each hand on linear passages, then apply this technique to selected keyboard works of J. S. Bach. This paper provides a method of training the hands for this type of alternation and will hypothesize a conception of hand positions as a method of facing the visual/spatial logistics issues of marimba performance. A performance annotation chapter will then apply the alternation sticking, and its resultant positional concepts, to three new transcriptions of J. S. Bach's inventions and a prelude and fugue from his Well-Tempered Clavier …

The Dies Irae ("Day Of Wrath") And Totentanz ("Dance Of Death"): Medieval Themes Revisited In 19th Century Music And Culture, Erin Brooks Jan 2003

The Dies Irae ("Day Of Wrath") And Totentanz ("Dance Of Death"): Medieval Themes Revisited In 19th Century Music And Culture, Erin Brooks

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

During the pivotal November 2002 football game of Arkansas vs. Georgia in the SEC conference championship, the Georgia marching band struck up their defensive rallying song. Instead of a typical "defense" song, the band played an excerpt of the Gregorian Sequence Dies Irae ("Day of Wrath'') from the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass. Drastically dissociated from its original medieval milieu, this musical Sequence still manages to elicit the same effect of fear and foreboding nearly a thousand years later. Precisely because of its deep musical and cultural roots, the Dies Irae occupies a significant place in history, closely intertwined from early …
