Mental Health Status Of Vietnamese Refugees In Utah County, Utah, David A. Acree

This study attempted to measure mental health status of Vietnamese refugees in Utah County, Utah. The test instrument used was the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). Two subproblems were considered: First, to see if refugee complaints on the CMI were predominantly physiological or psychological. Second, to see if there was a relationship between CMI scores and a related list of demographic variables.

Results showed the mean CMI score for the sample under study was well above the suggested score indicative of possible psychological dysfunction. For 80% of participants, psychological complaints were predominant over physical complaints. The only variables showing a relationship …

Environmental and ecological awareness has drawn public attention to the near extermination of many species and the detrimental effects of pollution, pesticides, and habitat destruction. The inefficiency of transmuting vegetable protein to meat has added to the traditional moral arguments of vegetarians. The widespread questioning of government support for basic research has been intertwined with suspicions about the use and worth of any studies on animals, even those purporting to help understand human medical and behavioral problems. The Synthesis And Biochemical Evaluation Of Potential Acetylcholinesterase Reactivators, Andrea Mcdearmid Lunsford

Objectives of this research were to (1) synthesize, and (2) evaluate new compounds which would be potential reactivators of organophosphate-inhibited acetylcholinesterase.

A series of 1,8-diazafluorenone and 2,2'bipyridylketone oximes and oxime methiodides were synthesized (11, 13, 14, 22, 24). These compounds were developed as structural analogs of 2-PAM (2-Pyridinealdoxime methiodide) and TMB-4 (1,1Trimethylene-Bis(4-formylpyridinium bromide)dioxime), the current drugs of choice for treatment of organophosphorous poisoning.

Acetylcholinesterase from electric eel was inhibited with DFP (diisopropylfluorophosphate), an irreversible-type inhibitor, and the inhibited enzyme was treated with the various reactivator compounds. The reactivation assays were monitored with pH stat apparatus, and the data were evaluated …

Feral pigeons (Columbia livia) are not harmless birds. Many potential infections of humans silently exist in pigeons which are not apparent. They have the potential for transmission of over 30 diseases to humans plus another ten to domestic animals. Environmental pollution from pigeon droppings is quite evident. Air pollution involves more than noxious gases from automobile exhausts and belching smokestacks. One serious air pollutant is air-borne fungi, which are agents for infectious diseases. There is much information written about the problem, but it remains primarily in the professional journals and technical references, neatly stacked away on library shelves. …

Paleoepidemiology Of Infectious Disease In The Dickson Mounds Population, John Lallo, George J. Armelagos, Jerome C. Rose

The major focus of paleopathology has been the delimiting of disease in time and space. Information about the history of specific diseases is the objective of many of these studies. While the chronological and geographical dimensions of paleopathology contribute significantly to our knowledge of disease, there are limits to this approach, which often fails to consider the interaction of biology and culture in the disease of prehistoric populations.

Stressor Effects Of High Relative Humidity And A High Moisture Diet On Appearance Of Disease From Nuclear Polyhedrosis Virus In Larvae Of Porthetria Dispar (L.), Pauline Thomas

High relative humidity (R.H.) and a high moisture diet were tested as stressors in the incidence of nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) disease of larvae of Porthetria dispar (L.). Relative humidity was shown to have no effect on the appearance of NPV disease in larvae reared in the laboratory. However, a high mortality from other causes was sustained by a group of larvae subjected to both high R.H. and a high moisture diet. The absence of NPV disease during the first larval instar period confirmed earlier findings that effective egg sanitization virtually eliminates NPV disease. Doctor Barber, of Toledo, was elected fifty-fourth president of the Association at the 1916 meeting in Louisville. During Doctor Barber's term, The Journal of the National Dental Association was established as a monthly publication. Dr. Barber was president of the Toledo Dental Society in 1900, the Northern Ohio Dental Association, also in 1900, and the Ohio State Dental Association in 1906. He served six years as a member of the Ohio State Board of Dental Examiners. He was born in Ohio in i860 and died in 1929.

Doctor Hinman, of Atlanta, was elected fifty-third president of the Association at the 1915 meeting in San Francisco. In his presidential address the following year he said: "One of the greatest needs of our profession in a legislative way is reciprocity in dental licenses." Doctor Hinman was dean and professor of oral surgery at Atlanta-Southern Dental College. He was a trustee of the Association for 12 years. He served as president of the Southern Branch of the National Dental Association in 1901, and as president of the Georgia State Dental Society in 1917-1918. He was one of the founders of …

In the annals of job health and safety, 1974 was a signal year. It produced an epidemic of occupational liver cancer associated with vinyl chloride disclosure of a plan to soft-pedal federal regulation of industrial hazards in return for contributions to the 1972 Nixon reelection campaign, and the publication of a brace of exposes decrying the human toll taken by workplace perils. These events furnish hard evidence that the bright hopes raised by passage of the landmark Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 remain far from fulfillment.

It is the purpose of this thesis to develop a course of study for pharmacy schools on drug regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A summarization of the history of the development of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and of pharmacy education reveals a lack of interface between the two.
