Dr. J.P. Scott was the head of animal behavioral research at Hamilton Station. He carne to our meeting with a thoughtful outline, and spoke to it for most of our interview. His tape, as a result, is mostly a monologue. This tape is extremely valuable because Jax threw away all the records of Hamilton Station, so only the accounts of Scott, Fuller and Fox (in this project) can provide a record of this aspect of the Lab's past. This study investigated the relationship of preferred interpersonal leadership style of chief board officers (CBOs) as compared to chief executive officers (CEOs) in hospital settings. Futher, the study explored the comparison of preferred interpersonal leadership styles of CEOs in selected areas of position, size of facility, age of the individual, years of experience, and time of last formal education degree. One hundred participants, 50 CEOs and 50 CBOs of hospitals, were surveyed in the study.

Throughout the history of warfare, the most difficult casualty to identify has been the emotionally wounded. Although policy changes were made to reduce the effects of psychiatric casualties, a number of Vietnam combat veterans continue to experience Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The purpose of this research was to survey the emotional conflicts of Vietnam combat veterans who were diagnosed as experiencing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Subjects (n = 28) were voluntary outpatient clients of a V.A. Mental Health clinic who were free of psychiatric, substance abuse, or organic problems. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was used, and analyses included the …

The thesis of this article is that, in spite of a large body of literature on the subject, a significant need exists for sociological research on the long-term consequences of the trauma experienced by survivors of Nazi concentration camps. Most of what is known about the adjustment of Holocaust survivors is based upon limited case histories of survivors who sought psychiatric aid, or requested assistance in qualifying for indemnification payments from the German government. The purpose of the present study was to compare post-traumatic stress syndrome among persons involved in nine different stressor events: combat in the Vietnam War; rape; serious life-threatening events; divorce; the death of a significant other; critical, near fatal illness of a significant other; family trauma; multiple traumatic events; and no stressful event. To assess the severity of the symptoms which define post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the Impact of Event Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Stress Assessment Scale for PTSD from the Vietnam Era Stress Inventory (Wilson & Krauss, 1980) and the Sensation Seeking Scale were administered to the …

Observations that link gammacarboxyglutamic acid (Gla) peptides with ectopic calcification are accumulating in the literature and may be summarized as follows: 1) Gla peptides selectively bind calcium and hydroxyapatite. 2) The presence of detectable levels of Gla in calcified tissue is concurrent with the onset of mineralization. 3) In an animal model, osteocalcin (a Gla-containing protein) accounts for more than 90% of all the Gla found in the resulting subcutaneously implanted calcified leaflet. 4) Vitamin D stimulates osteocalcin synthesis in cultures of osteosarcoma cells, and in vitamin D deficient rats subcutaneously implanted valve leaflets are not calcified. 5) Gla content …

Subsequent to World War II, a dramatic increase occurred in the utilization of nonhuman primates in biomedical and psychological research and industry. At the same time field studies on the ecological and social behavior of natural populations of primates also increased, making possible more realistic assessments of both the behavioral potentiality of primate populations and their conservation status. In spite of the growing body of information indicating the endangered or threatened status of most species, many laboratory workers and planning agencies continue to regard primates as renewable resources, even seeking to bypass protective legislation in habitat countries to obtain them. …
