The purpose of this study was to provide a historical reference on the origin, development, and objectives of the School of Nutrition and Dietetics from the beginning of the first dietetic program in 1908 to that of the present.

Three methods were employed in this study: the historical, interview, and questionnaire. The main historical source material was obtained from the Historical Records Office in the Library of Loma Linda University. The material consisted of selected letters of the administrators of the College and leaders in the dietetic programs. There is a greater amount of board minutes, annual bulletins, and documents. …

A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Two Cooling Baths For Reducing Fever In Children, Mildred Bailey Howard

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative effectiveness of two methods of administration of the cooling bath for reducing fever due to infection. Fifteen infants and children age six months to three years with rectal temperatures of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or over were included in the study.

The experimental method with a retroactive comparison of a parallel group was the research approach used. For a previous study by Kueffner, seven subjects had been immersed in tubs of water 95 degrees Fahrenheit which was gradually reduced to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, each subject remaining in the tub a total …

One of the major and long standing problems in undergraduate education has been the operation and maintenance of an efficient orthodontic clinic.

Literature based on the history of undergraduate orthodontic clinics, as well as of previous investigations into their operations was reviewed. Little if any, specific recorded information could be found.

The Problem: This study was designed to ascertain which of two pre-catheterization cleansing procedures now in common use for the female patient is more effective in producing an area relatively free of microorganisms.

The Need: Indications of need for the study were: (1) an increasing body of literature linking catheterization with frequent urinary tract infections, many of which are "silent" but have extremely serious sequelae; (2) lack of uniformity in defining adequate pre-catheterization cleansing; and (3) absence of any recorded research to determine an adequate cleansing technique.

The magnitude, and manner of application of forces effects the whole complex picture of tooth movement. Proper mechanical management in terms of the individual tooth as well as the entire arch, must be kept in mind. When applying forces for producing individual tooth movement as desired in cuspid retraction, we must consider the nature of the biological resistance in terms of the force distribution in the periodontal membrane as well as the force magnitudes necessary for efficient tissue response.

This study was conducted to discover the effects of (1) an interpersonal relationship and (2) an interpersonal relationship and music therapy on preoperative patients in a selected hospital.

The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of study. A checklist and a tape recording of selected music were used as a tool of research. Two groups of preoperative patients were given nursing care by the researcher. Patients in Group One received care with an aim toward developing an interpersonal relationship, while patients in Group Two received the same as Group One with the addition of music therapy.

This study was conducted to identify those anatomical and physiological facts which are essential in the nursing care of patients with pathology involving structures within the spinal canal.

Review of literature revealed increasing awareness, on the part of nurses and others, of the importance of the basic science to nursing care. Studies exploring the relationship between anatomical and physiological facts and clinical nursing were available. Literature also revealed that the use of individual patients, case studies, or patient records have been useful adjuncts to the teaching of nursing.

The purpose of this survey was twofold (1) to find out what knowledge the pediatric nurse has regarding selected medications which she is administering, and (2) to make recommendations relative to drug knowledge for in-service education programs in hospitals.

The data regarding abdication knowledge as collected by using a checklist form developed for this study and administered to seventeen graduate nurses in three selected hospitals each supervising a pediatric unit.

A checklist included categories, the route, the action time of a drug, and the side effects that could he commonly expected.

The In Vivo Effects Of Hydrazines And Vitamin B6 On The Metabolism Of Gamma_Aminobutyric Acid, Miguel Angel Median

Theses

The discovery of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in mammalian brain and its rigorous identification was reported in 1950 (1,2,3). Enzymatic experiments with brain acetone powder revealed that GABA was formed by the decarboxylation of glutamic acid and that the enzyme, glutamic acid decarboxylase, required pyridoxal phosphate as the co-factor (4,5). Radioactive tracer studies in vivo and in vitro with glutamic acid and glucose verfied the fact that the former was the precursor of GABA (6,7).

The Conversion Of Cytidylic Acid To Deoxycytidylic Acid In Rat Kidney, Judith Marie Werderitsch

Evidence was presented in 1949 by Bendich, Getler, and Brown (2), that the free pyrimidine base, cytosine, was not incorporated into the nucleotides of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Further studies by Hammarsten, Reichard, and Saluste (9) with cytidine and those by Roll, Weinfeld, and Carroll (26) with cytidylic acid, showed that the nucleoside and nucleotide derivatives were well incorporated into DNA. These experiments indicated that the conversion of the riboside (or ribotide) to the deoxyribose form had occurred with the nucleosidic linkage intact. This theory was further substantiated by Rose and Schweigert (29) using cytidylic acid incorporation into the total viscera …
