Bovine Testicular Antihyaluronidase In Rabbits: Production And Purification, Gerald Fine, Sheikh M. Saeed, Gerald A. Logrippo

An antibody chemically and immunologically active against bovine testicular hyaluronidase was produced in rabbits by injecting them with purified hyaluronidase in complete Freund's adjuvant. Nonspecific antibodies, reacting with human and bovine proteins which had little or no hyaluronidase activity, were also detected by the double agar immunodiffusion technique using antiserum against these proteins. After absorption of the antiserum with bovine heart and liver and removal of the precipitation bands against human and bovine tissue proteins, the antiserum inhibited the chemical activity of the purified hyaluronidase and exhibited immunologic activity against the purified hyaluronidase as shown by the agar double immunodiffusion …

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Neonatal calf diarrhea typical of that seen in field cases was produced in colostrum-deprived calves by inoculating either feces or bacteria-free filtrates via the duodenum, orally, or by a spray (aerosol). Three calves, kept free of E. coli, developed severe diarrhea following inoculation with a bacteria-free filtrate. Intense fluorescence in the epithelium of sections of small intestine from two experimental calves was observed following staining with ftuorescein-labeled gamma globulin produced with viral antigen prepared from the feces of two experimental diarrhetic E. coli-free calves. In the 1968 Annual Report of the Medical College of Virginia (Bulletin, 1968, pp8,18) the shortage of trained medical personnel is stressed as a serious problem in the care of the sick. As a result of this personnel shortage, approximately 100 beds have recently been closed in the University Hospital. This underlies the need for large medical centers to use O.R. techniques in developing more efficient use of existing medical personnel and in seeking cost reductions while increasing the quality and coverage of medical care. As I look at the list of distinguished Stoneburner Lecturers, I see I am honored by being the first psychiatrist. This is a tribute to the Department of Psychiatry. In thinking about this paper, I at first considered giving a kind of history of psychiatry. What seemed to me more interesting, however, was an examination of our whole perspective on deviance, in general, and what we call “illness”—an example of a certain kind of deviance, or, perhaps more accurately, a certain way of looking at deviance.

Induction Of Immunological Tolerance To Tissue Allografts With Antilymphocyte Serum, Anthony P. Monaco, Mark A. Hardy

Our interest in the problem of tolerance induction is directly concerned with clinical organ transplantation. ALS is highly effective in depressing cellular immunities. Since at least initial allograft rejection is predominantly a cellular phenomenon, one would expect ALS to be highly effective clinically. Our initial observations in this regard support this concept. However, non-specific depression of cellular immunity may also lead to an increased number or viral, fungal, and protozoan infections. Experiments, such as these presented, strongly suggest that a specific state of tolerance to organ grafts in man should be attainable with the aid of ALS followed by introduction …

Onset Of The Immune Response, S. G. Bradley

In our studies on the primary immune response, we have used germfree, colostrum-deprived swine taken three to five days prematurely by hysterectomy. These piglets lack gamma globulin until they are immunized. Upon antigenic stimulation, early macroglobulin antibody is produced within 48 hours; subsequently late euglobulin antibody is produced. Our results have led me to formulate a new instructive model for the onset of antibody formation.

In summary, sexual relationships involve two factors: lustful gratification and emotional and physical closeness. Lustful gratification involves sexual identity which is determined by: 1) biological sex; 2) gender identity; 3) child-parent relationships; 4) cultural value systems; and 5) sexological knowledge. Sexual problems are due to ignorance of the sexual facts of life and/or to contamination of the sexual area by other needs, wishes, or fears. A detailed understanding of the presenting complaints and the sexual history of the patient will enable the physician to make a differential diagnosis. The physician can then clarify the problem and assist the patient in …

The Role Of Preservation In Transplantation, Folkert O. Belzer

Although it is too early to draw any definite conclusions from these results, as a period of two years is probably necessary to evaluate cadaver kidney transplantation in humans, it appears that our well-matched patients have much fewer problems than our poorly matched patients. It is hoped that by preservation methods such as those discussed, improved methods of tissue typing, and better immunosuppressive therapy, we will be able to raise the survival level of cadaver kidney transplantations to the level between 80 and 85% presently being obtained in transplantations using living, related donors.

Histamine And Thyroid Hormone Function, Richard W. Schayer

Briefly, it will be postulated that a major function of thyroid hormone is for slowly developing adaptations of the circulatory system to environmental changes, and that many thyroid hormone effects are secondary to altered perfusion of tissues. There is no known in vitro effect of thyroid hormone which can reasonably explain any major number of the in vivo effects (Tata, 1964).

What Referring Physicians Can Expect From The Psychiatrist, David R. Hawkins
