Stress Urinary Incontinence In The Human Female: Gravity And Ecomorphologic Influences On Bladder And Urethral Function Of The Human Female, C. Paul Hodgkinson

This study was undertaken to determine if the biped stale of the human female constituted a stress force in urethrovesical physiological function. To arrive at realistic conclusions, the ecomorphologic changes incidental to the conquest of gravity by the vertebrates have been reviewed. Aqueous Microbiology: The Possible Role Of Cell Wall Deficient Bacteria In Uveitis, Philip C. Hessburg, Lioa H. Mattman, Carolyn Barth, Lloyd T. Dutcheshen

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Samples of aqueous humor were obtained from the anterior chamber of patients with uveitis. Bacterial L-forms, or cell wall deficient forms, were recovered from 11 of 19 eyes with unexplained uveitis. These bacterial variants were cultured on newer, highly specialized media and stained with acridine orange. This stain demonstrates fluorescence of nucleic acids under UV microscopy.

Kinetic Studies Of The Cell Elongation Phenomenon In Etiolated Pisum Stem Segments, Grant M. Barkley

Masters Theses

The short-term growth response of etiolated pea stem segments (Pisum sativum L., var. Alaska) was investigated using a high-resolution growth recording device. The immediate effect of treatment with indoleacetic acid (IAA) is an inhibition of growth. This inhibition lasts about 10 minutes and then the rate of elongation rises abruptly to a new steady rate about 4 times the rate of elongation before auxin treatment. This rapid steady rate of elongation, however, continues for only about 22 minutes before declining suddenly to a lower steady rate of growth about 2 times the rate of elongation before the addition of auxin. …

Introduction

This review is limited to the structures and a few reactions of the pesticides mainly insecticides-that affect mammalian systems and that are the subject of papers by other authors in this monograph. There is no attempt to give a complete review of the chemistry of pesticides. It is intended only to show the breadth and depth of pesticide chemistry through the use of examples. With proper use of the references, and of the papers by Crosby, Freed and Montgomery, and Owens in this monograph, the reader will be able to find information for other chemicals.

This investigation was designed to serve as a research project directed toward the study of histopathological response of human teeth to the intentional implantation of threaded, stainless steel, gold plated pins into the vital pulp.

Pins of several types are currently used in several aspects of restorative and periodontal dentistry. In some cases there may be unintentional perforation of the dental pulp. In other cases it may be advantageous to purposely perforate the pulp for added retention. The purpose of this research is to help determine the reaction, possibilities, and prognosis of such technique.

The Reaction Of Dog Tongue To Syrijet Injections, Donald L. Peters

Tissue response toward injection by a "fluid-pressure" type apparatus, the Mizzy Syrijet, was evaluated by using dogs as the experimental animal.

The tongue was the organ of choice because it's size is sufficient to allow for several injections without overlapping tissue responses. In addition the two halves of the tongue are anatomically separated by a median raphe, providing for further isolation of injections.

The animals were injected at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hour intervals utilizing the Syrijet on the right side of the tongue and needle on the left. Needle injection served as control for the microscopic comparison. …

Analgesic Effectiveness As Measured By A New Algesiometer, J. Raymond Wahlen

A method of measuring the effectiveness of analgesics using a new instrument, known as the Algesiometer,* is described. The instrument, utilizing an electrical stimulus, produced an experimental pain when attached to the skin over the mid shaft of the tibia. The patient, who was experiencing a pathological pain, gradually increased the experimental stimulus, by turning a control rheostat, until it was equal in intensity to the pathological, or clinical, pain. The intensity of the stimulus was calculated in milliwatts and consisted of a rectangular wave pulsating direct current of approximately one millisecond duration and an interval of nineteen milliseconds.

Human teeth mounted in individual plaster blocks were studied to determine the actual location of the root canal filling when it appears to be exactly at the radiographic apex. The original sample consisted of 109 teeth treated during endodontic technique class by junior dental students at Loma Linda University. In the most ideal manner possible, these teeth were radiographed on a flat surface with the x-ray tube perpendicular to the film and blocked tooth.

Five dentists examined the radiographs, and each one independently listed the canals he judged filled exactly to the radiographic apex. The investigator sorted out the choices …

A Cephalometric, Anatomic And Histologic Investigation Of The Effects Resulting From A Heavy Interrupted Orthopedic Force To The Maxilla Of The Macaca Mulatta Monkey, Roger Wayne Triftshauser

The purpose of this study was to determine changes that occur in the craniofacial complex, when a heavy interrupted orthopedic force is employed to retract the maxilla in the post puberal rhesus monkey. Cephalometric, histologic and anatomic examinations were utilized to substantiate the findings.

Four female rhesus monkeys were used for experimentation. Two were experimental animals and the other two controls. Cervical retraction with headgear was applied over a period of 313 days and 159 days to the two experimental animals. Forces not exceeding 2.5 lbs. were found most effective.

This thesis is the fourth in a series of empirical investigations concerned with symbolic interaction in marriage. Its basic assumption is that personal predispositions of marital partners as well as the social context of their marriage influences marital intimacy particularly the partner's readiness to communicate verbally with each other about important attitudes and feelings.

Fifty married graduate students attending Portland State University School of Social Work and their spouses comprised the sample. A B S TR A C T Prostaglandin E₁ (PGE₁) at a concentration of 1 ng/ml antagonized theophylline, and norepinephrine induced release of glycerol and free fatty acids (FFA) in human fat cell preparations. Insulin at higher doses also inhibited theophylline-stimulated lipolysis. The N₆-2-O^'dibutyryl derivative of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (DCAMP) stimulated lipolysis. Prostaglandin E1 did not significantly inhibit the lipid mobilizing effects of DCAMP. Changes in glycogen phosphorylase activity after treatment with theophylline, norepinephrine, DCAMP, and PGE₁ paralleled those of lipolysis. These results suggest that in man as in experimental animals lipolysis …

This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intra oral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. The Overwintering Of The Fireblight Bacteria Outside Of Living Tissue In Utah, Sherman V. Thomson

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the sites of overwintering of Erwinia amylovora (Burrill) Winslow et al. outside of living tissue in Utah. Bacterial isolates were taken from the surfaces of blighted twigs and mummified fruits remaining on the tree; also from internal dead tissue of blighted twigs and mummies, and from soil beneath blighted trees. Each isolate was tested for agglutination with antiserum specific for Erwina amylovora, susceptibility to Erwinia amylovora bacteriophage, production of symptoms in pear seedlings and development of bacterial ooze on green pears.

Both virulent and avirulent isolates were taken from all sites tested. …

The cost of fresh and dehydrated vegetables was studied in terms of initial cost and labor cost. Three institution kitchens were used: Logan Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Hospital, Logan Senior High School, and the High Rise Cafeteria at Utah State University. Beans, celery, onions, peas, green peppers, diced potatoes, shredded potatoes, sliced potatoes, and whipped potatoes were included in the research.

Fresh vegetables were found to have lower initial cost. Labor costs were lower for dehydrated vegetables. In the preparation of 25 pounds of vegetables the total cost of dehydrated vegetables was less than that of fresh …
