A Clinical Study Of Cuspid And Incisor Retraction Using The Mechanics Of Charles H. Tweed, Eugene R. Humphries May 1972

A Clinical Study Of Cuspid And Incisor Retraction Using The Mechanics Of Charles H. Tweed, Eugene R. Humphries

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A controlled clinical study of cuspid and incisor retraction using the mechanics advocated by Charles H. Tweed on class I four first bicuspid extraction cases was conducted. A carefully restricted sample of seven patients, three boys and four girls, was treated by seven graduate orthodontic students at Loma Linda University.

Measurements were made at monthly intervals to assess cuspid, incisor, and molar movements. Data were collected at each appliance adjustment to evaluate pain, difficulty, length of appointment, and the observations and impressions of each clinician regarding the technique.

The mean rates of cuspid movement during the cuspid retraction phase of …

Nitrogen Movement Under Irrigated Corn As Influenced By Nitrogen Source And Rate, Douglas C. Muir May 1972

Nitrogen Movement Under Irrigated Corn As Influenced By Nitrogen Source And Rate, Douglas C. Muir

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine nitrogen movements under a fall applied fertilizer as affected by rate of application of fertilizer, type of fertilizer carrier, and by crop grown. Two nitrogen fertilizers, calcium nitrate and ammonium sulfate, were applied in the fall of 1970. The soil profile was sampled in the spring of 1971 and again in the fall of 1971. Nitrate-nitrogen from both the calcium nitrate and the ammonium sulfate applications was found to have moved significantly from the time of application to the time of spring soil sampling. Two effects from the high rate of both …

Boron Movement In Soil Columns, Joseph William Stucki May 1972

Boron Movement In Soil Columns, Joseph William Stucki

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Three adsorption theories--Langmuir, B.E.T., and Freundlich--were applied to boron interaction with Aiken clay loam and Vernal sandy loam soils to determine which bests describes the system.

Column studies were conducted to obtain constants related to mass fluid flow and fluid dispersion within the column. An inert ion was used to obtain the pore volume and to calculate the fluid dispersion coefficient. These data were used to solve the material balance equation by the explicit numerical method developed by Lai for a digital computer. The output from the computer was a predicted profile boron distribution within the soil column.

The soil …

Nutrients And Phytoplankton In Hyrum Lake, Robert Bruce Murray May 1972

Nutrients And Phytoplankton In Hyrum Lake, Robert Bruce Murray

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The current investigation indicates that the routine appearance of a noxious blue-green algal bloom of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, in Hyrum Lake, a reservoir in northern Utah is a result of excess phosphorus. Data indicate that the algal growth is initiated by phosphorus liberated from the phosphorus rich bottom sediments, and at a time when nitrogen is present in excess in the lake relative to phosphorus.

Results indicate that the Little Bear River is the major source of nitrogen and phosphorus contributing to the eutrophication of Hyrum Lake. Nitrogen and phosphorus fluctuations in the Little Bear River proved to be concurrent with …

Understory Characteristics Related To Site Quality For Aspen In Utah, James H. Warner, Kimball T. Harper Apr 1972

Understory Characteristics Related To Site Quality For Aspen In Utah, James H. Warner, Kimball T. Harper

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

An analysis has been made of the basic ecology of aspen forests of the mountainous areas of Utah and northern Arizona. Forty-nine study areas have been examined in respect to density, height and age of the tree cover, tree reproduction, and composition and biomass production of the understory. A graphic model of interspecific assocations among prevalent understory species has been prepared by a cluster-analysis procedure based on presence and absence of species in 1,225 small quadrats (0.25 m2) uniformly distributed among the 49 stands. The model separates species of relatively stable as opposed to rapidly seral aspen forests. …

A Comparative Consideration Of Lipoprotein Distribution And Stress Response In The Mallard Duck And Man, Janice Mackay Apr 1972

A Comparative Consideration Of Lipoprotein Distribution And Stress Response In The Mallard Duck And Man, Janice Mackay

Honors Theses

Lipid is associated with all of the major serum protein fractions of both the mallard duck and man. however, whereas the ρ lipoproteins predominate in man with little lipo-albumin evident, according to available literature, in ducks the lipo-albumin constitutes more than half of the serum lipoproteins, and a substantial lipo-prealbumin fraction is evident. Most studies of lipo-proteins are carried out on human serum primarily for the purpose of diagnosis of abnormalities. The stress response in many animals includes a rise in serum α-globulin levels, but its physiological basis is still speculative. While a consideration of the changes in lipoprotein distribution …

The Simultaneous Occurrence Of Monosodium Urate And Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Crystals In An Arthritic Joint, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Frank J. Viozzi Mar 1972

The Simultaneous Occurrence Of Monosodium Urate And Calcium Pyrophosphate Dihydrate Crystals In An Arthritic Joint, Gilbert B. Bluhm, Frank J. Viozzi

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Gout and pseudogout, two metabolically different diseases, occur rarely in the same individual. A patient is reported who featured calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and monosodium urate cryslals simultaneously in the synovial fiuid exudate which was removed during an acute arthritic attack of the left knee. The patient represents the seventh such case reported in the literature. The pathogenetic differences of gout and pseudogout are reviewed as they relate to the role of the crystal.

Carbon And Nitrogen As Regulators Of Algal Growth In Treated Sewage, Edward G. Foree, Charles Reece Scroggin Mar 1972

Carbon And Nitrogen As Regulators Of Algal Growth In Treated Sewage, Edward G. Foree, Charles Reece Scroggin

KWRRI Research Reports

Continuous flow algal cultures were grown under three different growth conditions using secondary sewage treatment plant effluent as the growth medium. The only variable within each run was the hydraulic residence time. The concentrations of growth regulating nutrients were varied between the runs so comparisons of the algal mass, composition, nutrient uptake, and genera could be made. The importance of CO2 availability for algal growth was also studied. A kinetic theory which based algal growth on cellular nutrient concentration was verified. The second phase of the study was a batch culture study in which the same growth medium was …

The Effect Of Glucose On The Food Intake Of Goldthioglucose Injected Mice, Janet Lahti Jan 1972

The Effect Of Glucose On The Food Intake Of Goldthioglucose Injected Mice, Janet Lahti

Dissertations and Theses

Jean Mayer has postulated the presence of glucoreceptors located primarily in the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei of the brain which are activated by glucose in the measure that they utilize it. According to Mayer, hunger occurs when glucose is not available for metabolic purposes and satiation supervenes when glucose is made available. Control of this mechanism rests with the glucoreceptors. These receptors are believed to be destroyed when an injection of the compound goldthioglucose is given to mice. These animals subsequently become obese and are found to have gold deposits and lesions in the ventromedial area and also in other parts …

The high incidence of acute infections known to occur in pregnant women contrasts with the relative rarity of fetal damage and attests to the efficiency of the mechanisms by which the fetus is protected in utero.

Venereal Disease, Robert E. Petres Jan 1972

Venereal Disease, Robert E. Petres

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

At this point in time, the most intensive efforts toward education should be made in the medical schools. Very shortly these students will be faced with large numbers of patients with venereal disease, and we must prepare them. Unfortunately, this area in the medical school curriculum has been progressively crowded out by what seemed more important. It is now apparent that even though the prevalence of venereal disease may wax and wane, they will always represent a sizable medical problem. We must gear medical education and medical reeducation to meet these needs.

Observations Of Lens Epithelium In Cell Cultures, Walter J. Geeraets Jan 1972

Observations Of Lens Epithelium In Cell Cultures, Walter J. Geeraets

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The following investigation had been conducted to evaluate lens epithelial cells in vitro as a potential suitable model for future studies of chronic low dose ionizing radiation effects on this cell type in vitro. Since there is a great range of dose requirements to produce in vivo radiation cataract in man, monkeys, and rabbits, and an equally wide range in time from radiation exposure until the first minimal lens changes can be biomicroscopically detected, it may be assumed that in vitro comparison of cells derived from these three species may provide some explanation for the in vivo differences.

Hormonal Changes In Pregnancy, Michael E. Yannone Jan 1972

Hormonal Changes In Pregnancy, Michael E. Yannone

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Because of the time factor involved, it would be an impossible task to present the vast body of biochemical information accumulated during the last decade on the endocrine aspects of pregnancy. However, certain key points can be made concerning the feto-placental unit and the hormone levels and effects in normal gestation. These concepts will be discussed not merely for their academic value, but also as a base to evaluate our present diagnostic and therapeutic endeavors in obstetrical practice. With the audience’s indulgence, an occasional personal conjecture will be interjected concerning hormonal mechanisms and clinical practices.

The type or configuration of lens changes in these two species was quite different. This can be understood on the basis of the structural differences of their crystalline lenses based on the location of the suture lines.

The Surgical Approach To Problems Of Sexual Identification, Howard W. Jones Jr. Jan 1972

The Surgical Approach To Problems Of Sexual Identification, Howard W. Jones Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

While transsexualism is a disorder which seems to affect both anatomical sexes, the gynecologist plays his principal role in the therapy of the male transsexual, i.e., the anatomical male who considers the difficulty to be that of a female psyche trapped within a male body. It is only with these male patients with a female gender orientation that this discussion will deal.

Current Knowledge Of Gonadotrophin Releasing Factor(S), Emanuel M. Bogdanove Jan 1972

Current Knowledge Of Gonadotrophin Releasing Factor(S), Emanuel M. Bogdanove

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

What I want to discuss are not the potential therapeutic or diagnostic uses of these newly available compounds, which are really very speculative, but certain features of the physiological control system in which these compounds are thought to play key roles. Any rational system of therapeutics or prophylaxis involving these releasing factors, or their derivatives, must be based on adequate understanding of (1) the physiological roles of these compounds, (2) how these roles may be altered by disease, and (3) the effects specific disturbances of the control system(s) in which they operate can be expected to have on reproductive processes.
