Ticks Of Venezuela (Acarina: Ixodoidea) With A Key To The Species Of Amblyomma In The Western Hemisphere, Eleanor K. Jones, Carleton M. Clifford, James E. Keirans, Glen M. Kohls

Forty-nine species in 2 families and 10 genera are recorded for Venezuela. A key to the species of Amblyomma in the Western Hemisphere is given. Host and locality records are provided for each species. Venezuelan Nycteribiid Batflies (Diptera: Nycteribiidae), Lindolpho R. Guimarães

Eleven species of Nycteribiidae, all belonging to the genus Basilia, are reported from Venezuela. Of these, two (tuttlei and typhlops) are described as new and four (anomala, dubia, juquiensis, and tiptoni) are recorded for the first time. B. anomala is the first species with three tergal plates to be found in South America. Synonymies, previous localities, and host records are given for all species, as well as new records and comments. Geographical distribution and host-parasite associations are discussed. Field parties of the Smithsonian Venezuelan Project obtained the material on which this paper is based.

Preoperative Teaching And Its Relationship To Postoperative Recovery, Eleanor Wiese

The purpose of the study was to find out whether an organized, preoperative teaching program would make a difference in patient recovery from intra-abdominal surgery.

A review of literature served as a guide in defining the needs of patients and in developing class content. An outline, which included deep breathing, coughing, turning, bed exercises and what to expect, was made for the class. Nine slides were developed specifically for the teaching sessions. To reinforce the teaching, a handout was given to each patient.

The Possible Causes And Remediation Of Inverted Vision, Archie J. Beamer

The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine possible corrective methods for inverted vision. The visual problem is usually outgrown in the early teens, but these children who experience the problem tend to be classified as retarded because they cannot read. An intensive research of the literature for possible causes and corrective methods revealed inconclusive proof. However, two boys who were diagnosed to have inverted vision were given perceptual training exercises. The subjects responded to the treatment and in a short time were started on a reading readiness program. Although only two cases were found on which to experiment, …

This dissertation deals with several aspects of the structure and catalytic functions of the enzyme fructose - 1,6-diphosphate aldolase (I.U.B. Number 4.1.2.13) isolated from rabbit muscle.

First, it concerns the chemical nature of the proteolytic modifications of aldolase by a-chymotrypsin and subtilopeptidase B (Novo) in producing an enzyme with catalytic properties like those of the aldolase modified by carboxypeptidase A. The a-chymotrypsin modification has been published (C.F. Midelfort and A.H. Mehler, J. Biol. Chem. 247. 3127 (1972)).

Second it presents evidence for the occurrence of a slow deamidation of an asparagine residue in muscle aldolase in vivo which results in …

The Boraginaceae Of Utah, Larry C. Higgins

This paper presents a revision of the family Boraginaceae for the state of Utah. Ninety-three species in seventeen genera are recognized. The treatment includes keys, synonymy, descriptions, and citations of representative specimens found in the various herbaria in the state of Utah. The new combination Lappula occidentalis (Wats.) Greene var. cupulata (Gray) Higgins is presented.

C-Reactive Protein: Potential Significance Of Quantitation In Patients With Chronic Diseases, Hajime Hayashi, Gerald A. Logrippo

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in 351 patients with certain chronic diseases were assayed by a micro-double immunodiffusion technique developed and used in this hospital. Elevation of CRP values and severity of disease were evident in the following clinical entities: 31 of 54 patients (57%) with liver cirrhosis; 122 of 204 (60%) hepatitis patients; 34 of 52 (65%) patients with gastro-intestinal surgery; 8 of 21 (38%) uremic patients; and all of 20 patients with renal transplantation. There was good correlation between markedly elevated serum CRP values and degree of inflammation and/or physiologic stress during clinical course and recovery.

Physiological Parameters During Perfusion Fixation Of The Rat Central Nervous System For Electron Microscopy, Everet W. Witzel

In an attempt to elucidate the problem of extracellular space within the cerebral cortex of the rat, several physiological parameters were analyzed during perfusion fixation with glutaraldehyde and acrolein for electron microscopy. These parameters were electroencephalography, electromyography, electrocardiography, cerebrospinal fluid pressure, impedance of cerebral cortex, perfusion pressure, and flow rate of the perfusate.

The first portion of this investigation dealt with the problem of asphyxiation of tissues during fixation. A substituted blood containing fluorocarbon which was oxygenated served as the means to study this problem. The influence of pins on the compression and tensile strength of a composite resin was measured.

Compression strength was measured in cylindrical samples 8 mm long and 4 mm in diameter, using different size threaded stainless steel pins. The tensile strength was determined by compression along the diameter of cylindrical samples containing different sizes and orientations of threaded stainless steel pins.

The conventional dumbbell tensile strength was measured by pulling the mounted specimens in the direction of their long axis, using non-threaded pins.

Oral Lichen Planus : A Clinical Study Of The Association With Diabetes Mellitus And Vascular Hypertension, Gordon M. Rick

This investigation concerns the relationship of diabetes mellitus and vascular hypertension to oral lichen planus. Questionnaires were sent to 470 patients with oral lichen planus: 286 responded. Of these patients 103 were examined clinically, and 74 with current lesions were divided into ''keratotic'' and ''erosive'' categories. These patients underwent three-hour oral glucose tolerance tests; also, their asterial blood pressure was determined. In the survey group, diabetes was reported about three times more frequently by those with "erosive"; oral lichen planus than by those ''keratoic" lesions. The overall prevalence of diabetes was about two and one-half times greater than expected compared …

Both dibutyryl cyclic AMP and trypsinized concanavalin A have been shown to inhibit growth in certain cell lines but little testing of these substances has been done using human tumor cell lines. Further, there are at this time no published experimental attempts to correlate the effects on growth with a particular phase of the cell cycle in any cell line.

My experimental data show that the human tumor cell lines HeLa, HEp 2 and KB exhibit pronounced inhibition of growth when treated with trypsinized concanavalin A and reach a contact-inhibited state at a density far below that to which these …

[From the Introduction] This investigation attempts to establish the accuracy of fetal cephalometry in the second trimester of pregnancy beginning in the 13th week and to construct a fetal growth curve based upon the measurement of biparietal diameters. It will also attempt to document ultrasonic findings prior to the 13th week as parameters of fetal growth and well being.
