What I want to discuss are not the potential therapeutic or diagnostic uses of these newly available compounds, which are really very speculative, but certain features of the physiological control system in which these compounds are thought to play key roles. Any rational system of therapeutics or prophylaxis involving these releasing factors, or their derivatives, must be based on adequate understanding of (1) the physiological roles of these compounds, (2) how these roles may be altered by disease, and (3) the effects specific disturbances of the control system(s) in which they operate can be expected to have on reproductive processes.

This paper constitutes the first in a series of terminal reports to the United States Atomic Energy Commission for Contract AT (11–1) 1496. It includes a major study on the ecology and life history of Sceloporus occidentalis longipes Hollowell and a comparative study of three populations of Uta s. stansburiana Baird and Girard with special emphasis given for the Uta population on Rainier Mesa.

The study plot of major concern in this report is located on Rainier Mesa of the Nevada Test Site. Reports for other study plots (Frenchman's Flat–four study areas–and Mercury Valley ) will follow in the near …

The normal process of development of sexual identification slides almost unnoticed through well-defined, but overlapping stages to a definite end point. That end point is an individual who senses that his core gender, male or female, is consistent with the body morphology, the external genitalia, the chromosomal configuration, and the hormonal balance. Also, there must be the development of personality traits, masculine or feminine, consistent with the sense of core gender. Public education, although beset with criticism from its inception, is in the midst of weathering its most severe storm. One need only note the newspaper headlines for a week to see the myriad of demands being placed upon the schools. On one hand, there is increased demand for productivity--what Talcott Parsons, in his book, The Social System, would call instrumental education (education for usefulness)--and on the other, there is the insistence upon strengthening humanism in teaching and learning--again drawing on Talcott Parsons--called expressive education (education for self-fulfillment) (1). Western Australia's 67 per cent lambing for 1970 compares poorly with that of other Australian States, and other countries. From the 12.3 million ewes mated in this State's agricultural areas in 1970, only 8.2 million lambs were marked.

This low 77.7 per cent conception rate sparked the present series of reproductive wastage investigations by the Department's Sheep and Wool Branch.

This report describes the first year's results of the project in W.A.'s "clover disease" areas.

A Research Round-up report in the June, 1972, issue of the Journal of Agriculture discussed the reproductive performance of sheep in Western Australia and indicated that more than 20 per cent, of mated ewes fail to lamb.

Factors Regulating The Growth Of Algae In Continuous Culture In Diluted Secondary Sewage Treatment Plant Effluent And Subsequent Biodegradability, Edward G. Foree, Caroline P. Wade

KWRRI Research Reports

Heterogeneous algal cultures were grown in laboratory continuous culture in continuous flow, completely mixed chemostats in secondary sewage treatment plant effluent diluted to give an ammonia nitrogen concentration of 10 mg/1. Variables were lighting, pH, carbon dioxide availability, and hydraulic residence time.

Optimum growth occurred under pH 7.0, excess CO₂, and continuous lighting conditions. The availability of artificially supplied excess CO₂ greatly increased the mass (standing crop) at steady-state over that produced under otherwise identical conditions for all residence times studied.
