Radioprotection Of Oral Cavity Structures By S-2-(3-Aminopropylamino) Ethyl Phosphorothioate (Wr-2721), Ronald King

Studies reporting a high concentration of WR-2721 in mouse salivary glands led to our studies of possible radioprotection of these glands by this drug from ionizing radiation. Oral effects of radiation in the presence of WR-2721 were studied in mice and dogs. Histological evaluation of mouse salivary glands irradiated with 1000 rads of ⁶⁰Co showed essentially no difference between control and experimental animals. Almost full regeneration of the serous salivary components occurred by 6 months in both groups and neither group had changes in the mucous glands. Kinetic And Binding Studies On L-∝-Glycerophosphate Dehydrogenase, Paul Richard Rosevear

The properties of the coenzyme, NAD, binding site of chicken muscle L-∝-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase were studied. Adenosine monophosphate, adenosine diphosphate and adenosine diphosphoribose were sha.vn to inhibit the enzyme competitively with respect to NAD. The presence of adenosine, pyrophosphate and ribose regions in the coenzyme binding site of the enzyme was suggested by the inhibitor constants obtained for these compounds.

Disodium monoalkyl phosphates, n-butyl to n-dodecyl phosphate, inclusive, were also shown to inhibit the L-∝-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase catalized reaction competitively with respect to NAD. A positive chain length effect was observed in the binding of these compounds to the enzyme, suggesting the …

Large artery, pedal small vein, femoral vein and central venous pressures and extremity volume changes were recorded in mongrel dogs in which the hindlimb was perfused at a constant flow. Arterial, pedal venous and femoral venous blood gases were drawn and analyzed for measurements of arterio-venous O₂ and CO₂ differences. Paw and thigh resistances were calculated. Measurements were repeated following ligation of the iliac and femoral veins, alpha receptor blockade (dibenzyline), and dilation with Vasodilan. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effectiveness of the phase contrast microscope when used as an adjunct to a patient education program in motivating individuals to improve oral hygiene habits. A convenience sample with randomized groups was utilized to select sixty-five subjects. Subjects attended five appointments: one appointment for oral prophylaxis, three appointments for oral hygiene instruction and a three month recall. A phase contrast microscope demonstration was the independent variable. Plaque scores were measured at each appointment using a Modification of the OHI-S. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if there were significant differences in correct dental skill performance through manipulation of the independent variable, hand exercises, and the assigned independent variable, students' hobbies.

A Three-Group, nonrandomized, posttest only design utilizing a sample of 48 first-year dental hygiene students was developed. Subjects were assigned to groups on the basis of hobby questionnaire scores. All subjects received the traditional pre-clinical course of instruction. The study entailed a four-week period in which subjects were instructed in explorer instrumentation techniques followed by the administration of a Performance Examination.

Productivity Of The Roll-Streak Method To Perform Anaerobic Bacteriology In The Routine Clinical Laboratory, Thomas R. Neblett

Data presented are derived from one year of performing routine clinical anaerobic bacteriology by the roll-streak tube method. 826 specimens from 1508 (54.8%) contained anaerobes. 162 specimens were polymicrobic (19.6%) and contained 528 strains of a total of 1051 isolated (50.2 %). 479 blood specimens contained 525 strains of anaerobes. Propionibacterium, considered a contaminant, occurred 209/210 times in blood as the sole isolate. Bacteroides occurred alone or polymicrobically 308 times and comprised 54.7% of the blood isolates and 32.5% of the total anaerobic genera isolated. Clostridium, Peptococcus and Fusobacterium were the next most frequently occurring anaerobes. The roll-streak method is …

This study was based on more than 36,000 Venezuelan Streblidae representing ca. 115 species and species complexes in 22 genera, taken from more than 6,800 hats of 95 species. Two new genera are proposed and 45 new species are described. The morphology is briefly discussed and terminology is revised. Collection data are given for each species, together with discussions on variability and host relationships when pertinent. Keys to genera and species arc included, as well as illustrations of most species. The goal of reconstructive periodontal therapy is new connective tissue attachment to periodontally diseased root surfaces. Recently Register (1973) and Register and Burdick (1975) have reported accelerated reattachment and cementogenesis when citric acid was applied to surgically created root surface defects. There are apparently no reports in the literature regarding the effects of citric acid on periodontally diseased root surfaces. This study was designed to determine the effects of topically applied citric acid on periodontally diseased root surfaces using the scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopes.

The general consensus among orthodontists today is that the dolicofacial, retrognathic patient can present one of the most challenging problems for conventional orthodontic therapy. It is often stated that many of these patients will have more mandibular opening rotation during orthodontic treatment than the mesofacial or brachyfacial patient. This opening rotation is compounded when the use of cervical traction and Class 11 mechanics are incorporated into the treatment plan. Research was undertaken in order to functionally test the reinforcement capabilities of several commonly used, standard manufactured posts. One hundred and ten maxillary lateral incisors were mounted in plastic, reinforced with the posts at different levels, and then restored with standardized crowns. These teeth along with control groups, were then placed in a custom, mounting jig which properly positioned them for the stress testing. The forces required for fracturing these teeth were recorded and subsequently analyzed.

The statistical analysis of the experimental results demonstrated that posts do not reinforce teeth as supposed; they may, in fact, weaken them. Analysis also …

This investigation evaluated the gingival condition of areas with minimal (less than or equal to 1.0 millimeter) and appreciable (greater than or equal to 2.0 millimeters) widths of keratinized gingiva.

Sixteen dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students and dental faculty who had contralateral or unilateral areas of minimal and appreciable widths of keratinized gingiva on the mid-buccal surface of mandibular bicuspids were examined. Gingival exudate, plaque, gingival inflammation based on color change and/or swelling and bleeding on probing were evaluated. The results showed that all areas examined were plaque free. The experimental study attempted to determine whether pre-admission crisis nursing intervention had any effect on the level of anxiety of elderly people when they were transferred from an acute hospital to a nursing home.

The literature review related to trends in numbers of nursing homes and in the increase in longevity. Several articles indicated that the aged, as a group, lacked power to alter their situations. Hypothalamic and cortical extracts from various cariogenically grouped rats which had been maintained on either a Purina diet or a high sucrose diet (HSD) for three months were infused intravenously into 28 days old rats to determine if there was a titer of parotid hormone releasing factor (PRF) capable of facilitating fluid movement (FM) in the teeth. The hypothalamic and cortical extracts obtained from Purina-fed rats with 0-caries and the hypothalamic extracts from BSD-fed rats conclusively demonstrated FM stimulatory ability. Other Purina-fed groups were essentially biologically ineffective, however, extracts from HSD-fed caries groups including scores 11-40 demonstrated extremely potent FM …

The relationship between the number of persons per room in the home and the relative occurrence of stress-related morbidities of hospitalized patients is investigated. The social factors of age, social class, and level of social support also are examined as they relate to both density and morbidity type occurrence. The population under study is composed of all Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program members twenty years of age and older, discharged from Bess Kaiser Hospital during 1974, and whose diagnosed morbidity was included in specific morbidity categories. Forty-eight weanling male Sprague-Dawley laboratory white rats were fed diets composed of whole wheat bread which was made with one of the three sweeteners studied and added before or after baking and adequate vitamins and minerals for the animals' needs. The rats were divided into six groups, designated A through F. Groups A, C, and E were fed bread diets that had the sweeteners honey, corn syrup, and white table sugar added respectively before baking, while Groups B, D, and F were fed bread diets with the sweeteners honey, corn syrup, and white table sugar added respectively after baking.

Four Stump-tail monkeys (Macaca spiciosa) were used for this study to analyze, on a cellular level, the apical tissue of teeth overfilled versus teeth filled short 1-3 mm. of the radiographic apex with the Sargenti formula. In each animal four incisors were filled short and four incisors were overfilled. A final sample size consisted of 28 teeth. The time periods ranged from 48 hours to 120 days. After analysis of the histology it can be stated that the teeth filled short showed no inflammation to moderate inflammation in the periapical tissues.
