A Modified Nance Unilateral Molar Distalizer, Tracy J. Reiner
A Modified Nance Unilateral Molar Distalizer, Tracy J. Reiner
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This clinical study evaluated a modified Nance appliance designed by the author to distalize molars unilaterally for Class II correction. This fixed appliance did not rely upon extraoral traction or intraoral elastics. Twelve unilateral Class II patients aged 13 to 17 were treated nonextraction with the appliance. Pretreatment and posttreatment photographs were taken of the palatal soft tissue and did not reveal any untoward changes as a result of the Nance acrylic button. All molars were corrected to an Angle's Class I relationship. Molar correction was evaluated visually and molar distalization was measured using an acrylic jig fitted to the …

The Regulation Of The Transferrin Receptor By Inducers Of Cellular Differentiation And By Antisense Phosphorothioate Oligodeoxynucleotides, Peter Tai-Ching Ho
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Modulation of surface transferrin receptor (TfR) activity has been associated with leukemia cell differentiation and proliferation. To examine the mechanisms involved in regulating this event, surface receptor protein and mRNA levels were measured in HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells induced to differentiate along the myelocytic and monocytic pathways. Surface TfR down-regulation which occurs during granulocytic differentiation by dimethylsulfoxide, retinoic acid, or aclacinomycin A appears to be kinetically compatible with reduced biosynthesis resulting from reductions in the level of steady-state mRNA. In contrast, biosynthetic modulation does not appear to mediate the intial surface receptor down-regulation seen during 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate-induced macrophagic differentiation. However, a …

Autonomy In Practice: Conceptualization, Construction, And Psychometric Evaluation Of An Empirical Instrument, Judith Smith Dempster Dnsc, Msn, Rnc, Fnp
Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to conceptualize, construct and establish psychometric properties of an instrument to examine unmeasured dimensions of autonomy in practice through a process of retroduction and triangulation. In the context of ongoing rapid change and increasing competition in the health care delivery arena there is valid reason for nursing and other health professions to be concerned with their autonomous practice status. However, research and instrumentation activities have been hindered by the abstract nature of autonomy with only limited theoretical dimensions empirically measured. There is need to develop new, original, useful, and generalizable tools with a wide …
Health Locus Of Control, Sexual Self-Concept, Self-Efficacy And The Contraceptive Behavior Of College Students, Lorraine Kime Perkins
Health Locus Of Control, Sexual Self-Concept, Self-Efficacy And The Contraceptive Behavior Of College Students, Lorraine Kime Perkins
Ellmer School of Nursing Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the following study was to determine whether contraceptive use could be predicted from health locus of control, contraceptive self-efficacy, and sexual self-concept scores in a selected group of single college students ages 18-24. In order to better understand contraceptive behaviors, it is desirable to determine which personality variables may influence contraceptive behavior in young adults. A sample of 122 single undergraduate college students, both male and female, ages 18-24, completed a self-reported questionnaire including tools to measure health locus of control, contraceptive self-efficacy, and sexual self-concept, as well as demographic data. The participants were divided into two …

Morphological And Physiological Examination Of A Demyelinating And Remyelinating Lesion, Paul Anson Felts
Morphological And Physiological Examination Of A Demyelinating And Remyelinating Lesion, Paul Anson Felts
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Multiple sclerosis causes demyelination of central nerve fibers, and it is this pathology which results in most of the symptoms of the disease. The repair of the fibers by remyelination has been advanced as a potential symptomatic therapy, but at present the conduction properties of remyelinated central fibers are not well understood. In this study the conduction properties of Schwannian or oligodendrocyte remyelinated central nerve fibers have been determined. In addition, the status of the blood-brain barrier has been examined in lesions characterized by Schwann cell remyelination. These lesions chronically lack astrocytes, a cell believed to be involved in the …

Parallel Process: An Empirical Investigation, Thomas E. Pollack
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to conduct an empirical investigation of parallel process. The study used a cross-sectional design in which 30 therapy relationships and the corresponding supervision relationships were studied. The therapist assessed the behavior manifested by the patient during a targeted therapy session. Following the subsequent supervision session, the supervisor assessed the behavior manifested by the supervisee during the supervision session. In addition, each of the triad participants (patient, therapist, supervisor) rated the level of anxiety they experienced during the targeted therapy and supervision sessions. Measures of interpersonal style for each of the subjects were also …
The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin
The Relationship Between Occupational Choice And Perceptions Of Professional Nursing Functions And Characteristics, Ellis Quinn Youngkin
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management
This study identifies the occupational interests and predominant vocational personality types of freshmen students (undeclared majors, nursing majors, and non-nursing majors), explores perceptions about selected professional nursing functions and characteristics among the students, and examines perceptual differences between groups (majors).
A non-experimental ex post facto design is used to analyze data from 312 students in a large urban university. Descriptive and inferential statistics are applied in data analysis. The following findings support the hypotheses: (1) Nursing continues to attract the traditional student who has Holland's Social vocational personality type as measured by the Self-Directed Search, although many Social types are …

A Rapid And Simple Method For Preparation Of Rna From Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Mark E. Schmitt, Timothy A. Brown, Bernard L. Trumpower
Dartmouth Scholarship
Most methods for isolation of RNA from yeast require tedious vortexing with glass beads, and give low yields when scaled down to 10 ml cultures (1). In addition, it is frequently desirable to prepare RNA from several different yeast strains grown under a variety of growth conditions, and preparations using glass beads are impractical when dealing with multiple samples.
Cervicofacial Actinomycosis In Children, Michael E. Friduss, Dennis R. Maceri
Cervicofacial Actinomycosis In Children, Michael E. Friduss, Dennis R. Maceri
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Actinomycotic infections, once common in humans and cattle, are now rare causes of disease in man. This general group of organisms belongs taxonomically between the true bacteria and the fungi; however, the organisms behave clinically like true anaerobes. The organism, although phagocytized by the host cells, is not killed. Therefore, d is defined as a facultative intracellular parasite of the host. The protean manifestations of actinomycotic infections often mimic infectious processes, such as osteomyelitis or granulomatous disease, as well as neoplasia. It is therefore important for the surgeon to include actinomycosis in the differential diagnosis of cervicofacial masses in children …

Variability Of Quantitative Sensory Testing: Implications For Clinical Practice, Janice Redmond, Didier Cros, Bhagwan T. Shahani
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The conventional estimation of motor, sensory, and mixed nerve conduction velocities reflects activity in the fastest conducting, heavily myelinated nerve fibers that are only a small proportion of the total. Unmyelinated and thinly myelinated fibers are not evaluated by this technique and numerically represent the largest group of fibers in human cutaneous nerves. The availability of new quantitative techniques to study this aspect of sensory function is an important addition to standard electrodiagnosis. Patient understanding and cooperation is essential because subjective responses are evaluated. We evaluated a reference range for 20 healthy subjects as well as variability on repeated testing. …

Evaluation Of The Predictive Power Of Progesterone Receptor Levels In Primary Breast Cancer: A Comparison With Other Criteria In 559 Cases With A Mean Follow-Up Of 74.8 Months, Robert A. Huseby, Helen E. Ownby, Sam Brooks, Jose Russo
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
A total of 559 women with primary breast cancer treated by modified radical mastectomy were followed for a mean of 74.8 months to evaluate the relationship of sex hormone receptor content in the tumor with time to first recurrence and to death due to breast cancer. The prognostic significance of progesterone receptor (PgR) status was evaluated in terms of estrogen receptor (ER) status, age (< 49 years, > 50 years), extent of lymph node involvement, tumor size, and morphologic characteristics. Overall, patients with PgR positive (> 9 femtomoles/10 mg wet weight tissue) tumors experienced a significantly longer period to both first recurrence and …

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Met-enkephalin and related proenkephalin A-derived peptides circulate in plasma at picomolar concentration as free, native pentapeptide and at nanomolar concentration in cryptic forms. We have optimized conditions for measurement of immunoreactive Met-enkephalin in plasma and for generation by trypsin and carboxypeptidase B of much greater amounts of total peptidase-derivable Met-enkephalin in plasma of rats, dogs, and humans. Free Met-enkephalin (11 pM) is constituted by native pentapeptide and its sulfoxide. Characterization of plasma total Met-enkephalin derived by peptidic hydrolysis revealed a small amount (38 pM) of Met-enkephalin associated with peptides of molecular mass less than 30,000 D, and probably derived from …

We describe the characterization of the herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) gene encoding infected cell protein 32 (ICP32) and virion protein 19c (VP19c). We also demonstrate that the HSV-1 UL38/ORF.553 open reading frame (ORF), which has been shown to specify a viral protein essential for capsid formation (B. Pertuiset, M. Boccara, J. Cebrian, N. Berthelot, S. Chousterman, F. Puvian-Dutilleul, J. Sisman, and P. Sheldrick, J. Virol. 63: 2169-2179, 1989), must encode the cognate HSV type 1 (HSV-1) ICP32/VP19c protein. The region of the HSV-2 genome deduced to contain the gene specifying ICP32/VP19c was isolated and subcloned, and the nucleotide …
The Role Of Calcium Ions In Toxic Cell Injury., John L. Farber
The Role Of Calcium Ions In Toxic Cell Injury., John L. Farber
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Calcium ions have been increasingly implicated as a mediator of the mechanisms generating lethal cell injury under a variety of pathologic circumstances. An overview of the various roles suggested for such alterations in cellular calcium homeostasis is presented. The central role of plasma membrane damage in the genesis of irreversible cell injury is used to divide the postulated roles for calcium ions into two major mechanisms. On the one hand, calcium ions have been proposed as mediators of the functional consequences of plasma membrane injury. An influx of extracellular calcium ions across a damaged permeability barrier and down a steep …

Structures that cap the plus ends of microtubules may be involved in the regulation of their assembly and disassembly. Growing and disassembling microtubules in the mitotic apparatus are capped by kinetochores and ciliary and flagellar microtubules are capped by the central microtubule cap and distal filaments. To compare the ciliary caps with kinetochores, isolated Tetrahymena cilia were stained with CREST (Calcinosis/phenomenon esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, telangiectasia) antisera known to stain kinetochores. Immunofluorescence microscopy revealed that a CREST antiserum stained the distal tips of cilia that contained capping structures but did not stain axonemes that lacked capping structures. Both Coomassie blue-stained gels …

Alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity is stage specific in mouse embryos and may be associated with compaction and separation of trophectoderm from inner cell mass in preimplantation development. We previously sequenced a cDNA and two mouse AP genes that could contribute to the AP activity in embryos. Oligonucleotide primers were constructed from the three sequences and used in the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction technique to establish that two of the three AP isozymes are transcribed during preimplantation development. The predominant transcript (E-AP) is from a gene highly homologous to the human tissue-specific APs, but different from the mouse intestinal AP. Tissue …

A continuous intravenous infusion was used to assess the tissue penetration of cefazolin (14 subjects) and cefuroxime (15 subjects) in orthopedic surgery patients. Subjects were randomly assigned to receive a continuous intravenous infusion of cefazolin (mean, 178.6 mg/h) orcefuroxime (mean, 330.0 mg/h) at a rate estimated to achieve a target steady-state total concentration of 50 micrograms/ml in serum. The infusion was initiated 12 to 14 h before surgery, and blood and muscle tissue samples were collected intraoperatively at the times of incision and wound closure. Although there was a significant difference between the free concentrations ofcefazolin (at incision, 9.3 micrograms/ml; …
