Effects Of Ethanol Extraction And Heat Treatment Of Soybean Flakes On Function And Morphology Of Pig Intestine, J. D. Hancock, E. R. Peo Jr., A. J. Lewis, Rodney A. Moxley
Effects Of Ethanol Extraction And Heat Treatment Of Soybean Flakes On Function And Morphology Of Pig Intestine, J. D. Hancock, E. R. Peo Jr., A. J. Lewis, Rodney A. Moxley
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Digesta and tissue samples were collected from the intestinal tracts of 27 pigs to determine the relationship between intestinal morphology and the utilization of nutrients from soybean flakes. Soybean flake treatments were under-, intermediate- and overprocessed (Le., 5, 20 and 60 min of autoclaving) either without extraction or with heating before or after extraction with a 55% ethanol-water mixture. Final BW was greatest (P< .001) for pigs fed soybean flakes given 20 min of heat treatment. There was a trend (P < .09) for plasma lysine concentrations to be reduced when the unextracted soybean flakes were over-processed (60 min of heat). Differences in the flow rate of DM and N through the ileum and colon reflected differences in DM and N intake, rather than differences in intestinal function. The soybean flake treatments had no effect (P > .OS) on pH of the contents of the stomach, duodenum, ileum or colon. The ethanol extraction process increased (P < .001) N digestibility of the soybean flakes, especially when the soybean flakes were underprocessed (interaction, P < .02). Villus size (area, height and perimeter length) tended to be greater in pigs fed the soybean flakes heated after extraction and(or) exposed to the intermediate level of heat treatment. Indicators of villus shape (villus area/ villus height) and proliferative activity (crypt depth and villus heigh/crypt depth) were not affected by soybean flake treatment (P > .OS). Ethanol extraction and heat treatment affected the utilization of nutrients …

Activation In Vitro Of Transfer Rna-Guanine Ribosyltransferase By Protein Kinase C, Panayota Eriotou
Activation In Vitro Of Transfer Rna-Guanine Ribosyltransferase By Protein Kinase C, Panayota Eriotou
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to isolate and purify the enzymes, transfer RNA-guanine ribosyltrasferase and protein kinase C, and to determine whether the phosphorylating enzyme activates the insertion enzyme in vitro. Transfer RNA-guanine ribosyltransferase lost activity within several days after isolation and total, complete reactivation was accomplished in the presence of protein kinase C. This demonstrated that ribosyltransferase's instability is related to the degree of its phosphorylation. It is proposed that modification of tRNA is controlled by protein kinase C. Deactivation of the insertion enzyme leads to hypomodified tRNA which in turn is associated with neoplasia. Potential use …

Application Of Dna Fingerprints For Cell-Line Individualization, Dennis A. Gilbert, Yvonne Reid, Mitchell H. Gail, David Pee, Christine White, Robert J. Hay, Stephen J. O'Brien
Biology Faculty Articles
DNA fingerprints of 46 human cell lines were derived using minisatellite probes for hypervariable genetic loci. The incidence of 121 HaeIII DNA fragments among 33 cell lines derived from unrelated individuals was used to estimate allelic and genotypic frequencies for each fragment and for composite individual DNA fingerprints. We present a quantitative estimate of the extent of genetic difference between individuals, an estimate based on the percentage of restriction fragments at which they differ. The average percent difference (APD) among pairwise combinations from the population of 33 unrelated cell lines was 76.9%, compared with the APD in band sharing …

Laminin Potentiates Differentiation Of Pcc4uva Embryonal Carcinoma Into Neurons, T. M. Sweeney, Roy C. Ogle, C. D. Little
School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications
The embryonal carcinoma PCC4uva differentiates into neurons in response to treatment with retinoic acid and dbcAMP. We used this in vitro model system to study the effects of laminin on early neural differentiation. Laminin substrata markedly potentiate neural differentiation of retinoic acid and dbcAMP-treated cultures. Only laminin induced more rapid neural cell body clustering, neurite growth and neurite fasciculation as compared to type IV collagen, type I collagen, and fibronectin substrata. Exogenous laminin substrata promoted greater cell attachment, cellular spreading and growth to confluence than type IV collagen, type I collagen, fibronectin and glass substrata. Laminin-induced effects were inhibited by …

Analysis Of Cholesterol Screening Practices, Jane Mattina
Analysis Of Cholesterol Screening Practices, Jane Mattina
MSN Research Projects
Cardiovascular disease, which consists of hypertension, coronary heart disease, and cerebrovascular accidents, affects over 82 million American adults and is currently the leading cause of death in the United States. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies high-blood cholesterol as one of the main risk factors in the development of these diseases. Furthermore, 71 million Americans report having a high-blood cholesterol level, yet only about one third of those people have it under control (CDC, 2014c). The National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) guidelines recommend that adults 20 years or older be screened …

Characteristics Of Hospice Nurses And Nurse Clinicians In Primary Care Settings, Glenda Avery
MSN Research Projects
Literature review revealed that hospice nurses and primary care nurse clinicians were similar in nursing philosophy, practice, and professional qualities suggesting that a hospice setting may be a new role dimension for primary care nurses. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare demographic characteristics, personality characteristics, and death anxiety levels among hospice nurses and primary care nurse clinicians. The conceptual framework was Modeling and Role Modeling by Erickson, Tomlin, and Swain (1983). A descriptive ex post facto design was used to answer five research questions. The 16 PF Personality Factor Questionnaire, Temp1er Death Anxiety Scale, and the Demographic …
Progressive Muscle Relaxation As An Adjunctive Treatment For Moderate Asthmatics, Kellye Hutton Slaggert
Progressive Muscle Relaxation As An Adjunctive Treatment For Moderate Asthmatics, Kellye Hutton Slaggert
Masters Theses
This study examined the effects of parent assisted progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) training on moderate asthmatics. Three children between the ages of 7 and 12 participated in the study. After 3 weeks of PMR training and daily practice, the parents became involved in prompting their children to use PMR when an attack appeared likely.
The findings from this study suggest that parental prompting of PMR was instrumental in decreasing the frequency of attacks, increasing peak expiratory flow rates (PEFR) values, and decreasing the severity of attacks for 2 of the 3 subjects. The long term implications for using PMR as …

Development Of Catalytic Rnas As Potential Anti-Hiv-1 Agents, Pairoj Sae Chang
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
RNA molecules with enzymatic activity (ribozymes) targeted to the genome of HIV-1 were developed and demonstrated to mediate site-specific cleavage of the HIV-1 RNA in vitro and to inhibit viral proliferation intracellularly. Two classes of ribozymes that incorporate a "hammerhead" catalytic center were utilized, eotide elements in the viral sequence to provide half of the The first class used nuclcatalytic center. A complementary strand harboring the remaining active site nucleotides was supplied in trans and directed the site-specific cleavage of the HIV-1 RNA target. A second type of ribozyme incorporated the entire catalytic center, minus the site of cleavage, within …
Proto-Oncogene Regulation By Growth Factors In Bone Cells, Harold Lyndon Merriman
Proto-Oncogene Regulation By Growth Factors In Bone Cells, Harold Lyndon Merriman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Previous studies have shown that bone cells in culture produce a number of growth factors that are important in bone regulation. Chick and mouse primary calvarial cultures consist of a mixture of cell types that make it difficult to interpret the results from these model systems. In contrast, MC3T3-E1 cells are a clonal mouse osteoblast-like cell line. Since MC3T3-E1 cells consist of a single population of calvarial cells, they make an ideal system in which to study the autocrine effects of bone growth factors.
Based on this work, MC3T3-E1 cells are now known to produce IGF-I, TGF-beta and IGF-II in …

Electrophysiology, Cell Calcium, And Mechanisms Of Hepatocyte Volume Regulation, Walid E. Khalbuss
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The electrophysiologic technique (Reuss, L., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 82:6014, 1985) was modified to measure changes in steady-state hepatocyte volume during osmotic stress. Hepatocytes in mouse liver slices were loaded with tetramethylammonium ion (TMA$\sp{+}$) during transient exposure of cells to nystatin. Intracellular TMA$\sp{+}$ activity (a$\sp{\rm i}\sb{\rm TMA}$) was measured with TMA$\sp{+}$-sensitive, double-barreled microelectrodes. Loading hepatocytes with TMA$\sp{+}$ did not change their membrane potential (V$\sb{\rm m}$), and under steady-state conditions a$\sp{\rm i}\sb{\rm TMA}$ remained constant over 4 min in single impalements. Hyperosmotic solutions (50, 100, & 150 mM sucrose added to media) and hyposmotic solutions (sucrose in media reduced by …

This study found many variables which influence fit testing. These include the type of respirator used (brand and facepiece), the probe …
Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior
Effects Of Applied Soil Repellent Finish On Pesticide Residues In Work Clothing, Sandra L. Prior
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the feasibility of using an applied soil repellent finish, Scotchgard, on 100% cotton denim fabric in order to enhance the removal of atrazine and alachlor residue during the laundering process. The experimental findings provided no statistically significant evidence that Scotchgard fabric protector reduced pesticide residuals on the 100% cotton denim fabric either before or after laundering. A significant finding secondary to the study involved the possible interaction of Scotchgard with the pesticide alachlor, leaving greater amounts of residual on the fabric after laundering than those found with no fabric treatment. This suggests that agricultural workers be cautioned …
