Human–Wildlife Interactions
The common chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon) is a threatened species in Spain. The loss and transformation of their traditional habitats are among the main causes of its decline. Linear infrastructures, such as roads and highways, cause direct habitat loss, roadkill, and fragmentation of populations by acting as an artificial barrier. In this study, we investigated the potential effect of 2 high-speed road infrastructures in southern Spain on local populations of common chameleons. A total of 34 grids of 1x1 km were sampled, differentiating between grids without road presence (n = 17) and grids with road presence (n …

Dust Management At An Active Construction Area Affects Monarch Distribution, Amy W. O'Donnell, Jeffery D. Sullivan, Carl R. Callahan, Peter C. Mcgowan, Diann J. Prosser
Human–Wildlife Interactions
The North American population of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) is experiencing dramatic declines, necessitating investigations into challenges facing this species that can be resolved through management actions. For instance, dust made airborne by heavy equipment driving along a dirt road can settle on roadside vegetation, resulting in reduced use by monarchs. Dust accumulation on areas where floral nectaries such as leaves, stems, and flowers may be present could reduce the ability of pollinators, such as monarchs, to access nectar from flowering plants needed during migration. One such challenge was observed on Poplar Island, an island restoration project located in …

Drop Retention And Departure In Adiabatic Shear Flow On Structured Superhydrophobic Surfaces, Blake M. Lyons, Daniel Maynes, Julie Crockett, Brian D. Iverson
Faculty Publications
Drops are retained or held on surfaces due to a retention force exerted on the drop by the surface. This retention force is a function of the surface tension of the liquid, drop geometry, and the contact angle between the drop and the surface. When external or body forces exceed the retention force, the drop begins to move. This work explores the conditions for which drop departure occurs on structured superhydrophobic surfaces in the presence of an applied shear flow. Drop departure is explored for five microstructured superhydrophobic surfaces, one nanostructured carbon nanotube surface and one smooth hydrophobic surface. Surface …

In Vivo Human Medial Gastrocnemius Fascicle Behaviour And Belly Gear During Submaximal Eccentric Contractions Are Not Affected By Concentric Fatiguing Exercise, Matheus Daros Pinto, Kazunori Nosaka, Anthony J. Blazevich
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Changes in muscle geometry and belly gearing during eccentric contractions influence fibre strain and susceptibility to muscle damage. They are modulated by the interaction between connective tissues and intracellular-intrafascicular fluid pressures and external pressures from neighbouring structures. Fatiguing exercise triggers fluid shifts (muscle swelling) and muscle activation changes that may influence these modulators. Our purpose was to measure medial gastrocnemius (MG) geometric changes in vivo during eccentric contractions before and after maximal concentric muscle work to test the hypothesis that fatigue would reduce fascicle rotation and muscle gear and provoke greater fascicle strain. Submaximal eccentric plantar flexor contractions at 40% …

Advancing Natural Hydrogen Exploration: Headspace Gas Analysis In Water-Logged Environments, Krista Davies, Lionel Esteban, Alireza Keshavarz, Stefan Iglauer
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Natural hydrogen has gained prominence as a potential contributor to the low-carbon energy landscape; however, exploration techniques are still evolving. Current methods primarily rely on dry soil gas studies or gas vent measurements. Because gas vents are scarce and groundwater inhibits hydrogen gas flux from the soil, other field detection techniques are necessary. This research paper presents a novel approach for advancing natural hydrogen exploration through the analysis of headspace gas of agitated groundwater extracted from dedicated shallow boreholes to better estimate the hydrogen gas flux and its variations with time. Several shallow boreholes were drilled in Western Australia on …

Oral Microbial Profiles Of Extrinsic Black Tooth Stain In Primary Dentition: A Literature Review, Shinan Zhang, Xue Dong, Weijin Zhao, Sha Ma, Ximeng Li, Guiding Li
Journal of Dental Sciences
Abstract The extrinsic black tooth stain (EBS) is commonly found in primary dentition. Patients cannot clean the EBS; this can only be done by professional scaling and debridement. It also has a tendency to reform, which significantly compromises children's aesthetics and even affects their quality of life. However, there is no conclusive evidence on the etiology of the EBS. The associations between the EBS and related oral microbial features is one of the research hot topics. No literature review summarized these research progresses in this area. Therefore, we reviewed the literature on the microbiology of the EBS since 1931 and …

A novel method for determining the yield of bacterial growth using square wave voltammetry and screen printed electrodes is described here. This procedure was shown to be a reliable and accurate way to quickly determine the level of bacterial growth within culturing media and these results suggest that the combination of such sensors and the application of square wave voltammetry is suitable for applications such as within a bioreactor where the rapid determination of bacterial growth may be necessary.
