Use Of Pollen Concentration In Paleopharmacology: Coprolite Evidence Of Medicinal Plants, Karl Reinhard, Donny L. Hamilton, Richard H. Hevly
Karl Reinhard Publications
Nearly 2,400 plant species have been documented ethnographically as having medicinal value among Native Americans. Therefore, it is not surprising that evidence of medicinal plants appears in some of the over 1,000 coprolites analyzed from the southwestern U.S. Three medicinal species identified in pollen analysis of coprolites are discussed. Willow (Salix) is the most common analgesic in the Native American pharmacopoeia. Prehistoric use of this plant is documented in coprolites from Bighorn Cave in the Black Mountains of Arizona and also in a burial from the Mimbres Valley, New Mexico. Historically, Mormon tea (Ephedra) served as …

Gender Effects On Recall, Clinical Judgement And Treatment Recommendations For A Combination Of Major Depression And Alcohol Dependence Symptoms, Jodi L. French
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
This study investigated the effect of client gender on several aspects of clinical decision-making processes and clinical judgement when a client presented with a combination of depressive and alcohol-dependent symptoms. Forty-four male and 44 female clinicians, who came from various mental health disciplines (i.e., psychology, social work, counseling, nursing, and psychiatry), volunteered to participate as subjects.
The subjects were assigned to hear one of four audiotapes (two male tapes and two female tapes) in which mock clients gave the same initial presentation of symptoms and problems. After listening to the tapes, the clinicians were asked to engage in a number …

Phenyl Butyl Nitrone Compositions And Methods For Treatment Of Oxidative Tissue Damage, John M. Carney, Robert A. Floyd
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Patents
Compositions for treating tissue damage from ischemia contain PBN, or active derivatives thereof, which are active during ischemia in preventing ATP depletion of the cells which predisposes them to subsequent injury during reperfusion, and which are active during reperfusion as oxygen radical scavengers, in a suitable pharmaceutical carrier for systemic or local administration, especially to the CNS, spinal column and eyes. Based on animal studies, the dosage for treating damage due to stroke is in the range of 10 to 300 mg/kg. Similar dosages are useful in treating damage resulting from free radical generation during inflammation, either as a product …

Risk Assessment For Developmental Toxicity: Airborne Occupational Exposure To Ethanol And Iodine, Donald R. Mattison
RISK: Health, Safety & Environment (1990-2002)
Dean Mattison explains hazard identification, hazard characterization and exposure characterization as furnishing a foundation for Risk assessment generally. He then illustrates their application in assessing the fetal Risk posed by two common substances. Ultimately, he argues that only after Risks have been so examined can women of child bearing age (or anyone) decide what if any measures are appropriate to avoid them.

Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia: Molecule To Man, Robert Peter Gale
Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia: Molecule To Man, Robert Peter Gale
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is the best understood human cancer. The molecular basis of CML involves activation of a cellular proto-oncogene—ABL. The consequence is to increase tyrosine kinase activity. This results in a marked clonal increase in the myeloid mass. Later on, cellular maturation is blocked and the decrease eventuates in acute leukemia. Abnormalities of other proto-oncogenes or antioncogenes, like P53, may be involved in leukemia progression. Treatment of CML involves chemotherapy and, more recently, interferon. Whether this treatment prolongs survival or increases the likelihood of cure is unknown but either result seems unlikely. Bone marrow transplants which cure about …

Application Of The Polymerase Chain Reaction For Detection Of Minimal Residual Disease Of Hematologic Malignancies, Mark S. Roth, Valeri H. Terry
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Current induction therapies for acute and chronic leukemias and the lymphomas have achieved significant complete remission rates. Despite this initial success, disease recurrence remains a major problem. Relapse from clinically undetectable residual malignant cells is the most likely mechanism of recurrence. Of crucial importance to the clinician is the accurate detection of residual malignant cells prior to clinical relapse. Standard approaches to evaluate for this minimal residual disease (MRD) allow detection only when the malignant clone exceeds 1%. Patients in remission, however, may frequently have residual neoplastic cells that are far below this level. Recently, several investigators have adapted the …

Heterogeneity Of Methotrexate Binding In Human Colon Tumor Cells, M P. Iqbal, N Mehboobali, M A. Waqar, M Ahmed
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
[3H]-methotrexate binding at pH 5.0 and pH 7.2 by the cytosol of tumor tissues and the surrounding normal areas of the gastrointestinal tract of patients suffering from colon or gastric cancer has been used to identify in these cells the presence of a binder of methotrexate having low-affinity for this drug in addition to the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. Scatchard analysis of the [3H]-methotrexate binding data by a colon tumor sample also reveals that there are two binders of this drug present in the cytosol of these cells. The association constant (Kass) for one binder of methotrexate is = 5.6 x …
Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation As An Alternative To Bone Marrow Transplantation: An Overview, Nalini Janakiraman
Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation As An Alternative To Bone Marrow Transplantation: An Overview, Nalini Janakiraman
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Stem cells capable of restoring hematopoiesis following lethal bone marrow injury circulate in the blood of many animals, including humans. When collected through leukapheresis and reinfused following high-dose chemotherapy, stem cells offer a treatment option not currently open to some patients who are unable to undergo autologous bone marrow transplantation because of tumor involvement in the pelvis, prior pelvic radiation, or intolerance to general anesthesia. After stem cell infusion, hematologic and immunologic recovery are rapid in comparison to that after autologous hone marrow reinfusion: however, in some cases platelet engraftment is slower. There is some evidence that tumor contamination in …

Time Delay Neural Networks And Speech Recognition: Context Independence Of Stops In Different Vowel Environments, Gregory Andrew Makowski
Time Delay Neural Networks And Speech Recognition: Context Independence Of Stops In Different Vowel Environments, Gregory Andrew Makowski
Masters Theses
A series of speech recognition experiments was conducted to investigate time-dynamic speech recognition of stop consonants invariant of vowel environment using data from six talkers. The speech preprocessing was based on previous studies investigating acoustic characteristics which correlate to the place of articulation (Blumstein and Stevens 1979). The place of articulation features were statistically abstracted using four moments and the energy level of the speech sample.
Both statistical and neural network pattern recognition methods were used. Statistical methods included linear and quadratic discriminant functions, maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and K-nearest neighbors (KNN). The neural network approach used was Time Delay …

Effect Of Age On The Structure Of Meissner Corpuscles In Forepad Digital Pads Of Mice, Roger C. Mathewson
Effect Of Age On The Structure Of Meissner Corpuscles In Forepad Digital Pads Of Mice, Roger C. Mathewson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Meissner corpuscles in forepaw digital pads of albino mice were examined by light and electron microscopy to determine structural age-changes. After 1.5 months of age, no intraepidermal nerve fibers were seen extending from corpuscles. From young (1.5-6 months) to middle age (9-15 months), corpuscles became larger and more complex, gaining more horizontally arranged terminals, associated lamellae and connective tissue. At old age (18-26 months), corpuscles became small and lobulated, appearing disorganized. There was no loosening of the corpuscle-epidermal interface. An increase in collagenous connective tissue and basal lamina duplication occurred with advancing age. Ultrastructural age-changes consisted of disorganization of the …

The Accuracy Of Sonographic Imaging (Dolphintm Digigraph) And Standard Lateral Cephalometric Radiographs : A Comparative Study, Michael D. Teichman
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Radiation due to x-ray exposure is a concern, and the development of the Dolphin™ DigiGraph represents an attempt to limit this exposure. The purpose of this paper was to compare measurements (using Ricketts analysis) obtained from conventional radiographic cephalometric tracings with those obtained by computerized digitizing with the DigiGraph. Forty-six patients from the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry graduate orthodontic clinic were digitized, and the results were compared to the x-ray tracings of these patients. The results showed that seven of the twenty-one variables examined exhibited a statistical similarity between the two methods (DigiGraph and x-ray tracing). An examination …
Histomorphometric Analysis Of Primate Periodontal Tissues Following Corticotomy In Orthodontics, Wuiteng Koh
Histomorphometric Analysis Of Primate Periodontal Tissues Following Corticotomy In Orthodontics, Wuiteng Koh
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of specific cell types and structures at the active tooth movement site in corticotomized and non-corticotomized specimens obtained from a previous study, and to consider the hypothesis that corticotomy facilitated orthodontics is efficacious due to an inflammatory response rather than tooth-bone block movement. Specimens from 3 monkeys, each of which had a treatment and control quadrant in each arch, were sectioned, mounted on glass slides, and stained with Giemsa, haematoxylin, and Safranin stains. A histomorphometric analysis was performed with DataVoice™, a voice activated computer system which allowed for digitization of …

The Impact Of Variations In Buccolingual Thickness Of Maxillary Anterior Dentition On First Order Arch Form Adjustments, Craig A. Andreiko
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Pre-adjusted bracket systems offer the clinician the convenience of working with both fewer in number and smaller magnitude adjustments in the archwire. The purpose of this study was to examine the normal variations in the thickness of the six maxillary anterior teeth and how this relates to anticipated first order bends in the archwire. A second purpose was to examine these same teeth for bilateral symmetry.
Thirty casts from the Loma Linda University completed treatment files were examined with respect to variations in the thicknesses of the crowns at the level of the archwire plane. From these, the mean difference …

Perforin lyses cells by binding to the target cell membrane, where it polymerizes into large nonspecific pores. It is shown here that the first 34 amino acids of the N-terminal region of either human or murine perforin are soluble in aqueous medium and spontaneously insert into membranes. The N-terminal peptides lyse liposomes and nucleated cells, and they form ion channels in planar bilayers, some of which are comparable to those previously described for perforin. The lytic activity of the N-terminal domains does not require calcium, is independent of the lipid headgroup composition, and can be inhibited by heparin. Tumor cells …

Mental Health Policy And Programs In Israel: Trends And Problems Of A Developing System, Uri Aviram
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Israel has an ancient history blended together with a relatively brief independent identity. An introductory section provides a backdrop for understanding mental health policies and programs in the context of the cultural and historical background of Israel's people. The second section portrays the nature of the mental health delivery system. The final section focuses on three interrelated issues: the limited development of community mental health services, the dominance of the mental hospital in the provision of mental health services, and the medicalization of mental health services.

Dartmouth Scholarship
To gain further insight into the role of Raf-1 in normal cell growth, c-raf-1 mRNA expression, Raf-1 protein production, and Raf-1-associated kinase activity in normal human T cells were analyzed. In contrast to the constitutive expression of Raf-1 in continuously proliferating cell lines, c-raf-1 mRNA and Raf-1 protein levels were barely detectable in freshly isolated G0 T lymphocytes. Previous work with fibroblasts has suggested that Raf-1 plays a signaling role in the G0-G1 phase transition. In T cells, triggering via the T-cell antigen receptor (TCR)-CD3 complex (TCR/CD3) resulted in an approximately fourfold increase in c-raf-1 mRNA. In addition, the promotion …

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
When defined in terms of markers for normal cell lineages, most invasive breast cancer cells correspond to the phenotype of the common luminal epithelial cell found in the terminal ductal lobular units. Luminal epithelial cells cultured from milk, which have limited proliferative potential, have now been immortalized by introducing the gene encoding simian virus 40 large tumor (T) antigen. Infection with a recombinant retrovirus proved to be 50-100 times more efficient than calcium phosphate transfection, and of the 17 cell lines isolated, only 5 passed through a crisis period as characterized by cessation of growth. When characterized by immunohistochemical staining …
