Psychology's Use Of Animals: Current Practices And Attitudes, Kenneth J. Shapiro

Experimentation Collection

In this chapter, I present a psychology primer for the uninitiated, with special emphasis on psychology's uses of animals. After sketching the scope of the field generally, I review available data on present numbers and species of animals used in psychological research, level of suffering induced and current trends. I also provide several concrete examples of psychological research involving animals. Finally, the chapter concludes with a presentation of attitudes of psychologists toward animals and these practices.

Effective Treatment Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : A Multimodal Approach, Dave A. Lipinski Jan 1998

Effective Treatment Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder : A Multimodal Approach, Dave A. Lipinski

Graduate Research Papers

The beginning of the 1990's brought with it increased attention to what is becoming the most talked about disorder of childhood and adolescence, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This disorder is estimated to afflict between 3% and 9% of the entire United States school-aged population. The most common treatment consist of behavior modification, cognitive therapy, diet restrictions and food supplements, cognitive and social skill training, psychosocial interventions, interpersonal problem solving and prescription medicine such as Ritalin.

The literature on stimulant medication and psychosocial treatments for children with ADHD suggest that no single method of treatment alone yields significant long-term therapeutic …

Ecologic Studies Of Rodent Reservoirs: Their Relevance For Human Health, James N. Mills, James E. Childs Jan 1998

Ecologic Studies Of Rodent Reservoirs: Their Relevance For Human Health, James N. Mills, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Within the past few years, the number of “new” human diseases associated with small-mammal reservoirs has increased dramatically, stimulating renewed interest in reservoir ecology research. A consistent, integrative approach to such research allows direct comparisons between studies, contributes to the efficient use of resources and data, and increases investigator safety. We outline steps directed toward understanding vertebrate host ecology as it relates to human disease and illustrate the relevance of each step by using examples from studies of hosts associated with rodent-borne hemorrhagic fever viruses.

Dietary Habits Of The Common Rodents In An Agrecosystem In Argentina, Barbara A. Ellis, James N. Mills, Gregory E. Glass, Kelly T. Mckee Jr, Delia A. Enria, James E. Childs

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications

Dietary habits of five common rodents in agroecosystems on the central Argentine Pampa were studied for 15 months using microhistological analysis of stomach contents. All five rodent species were omnivorous, but proportions of major dietary items (arthropods, dicot leaves and seeds, monocot leaves and seeds) varied among species and seasons. Akodon azarae largely was entomophagous; arthropods formed 41-62% of the diet in all seasons. The other four species (Calomys musculinus, Calomys laucha, Bolomys obscurus, and Oligoryzomys flavescens) consumed most diet items throughout the year, but relative proportions varied among seasons. Leaves formed a relatively minor proportion of the …

The Effects Of Vitamin E On Catalase Activies In Various Rat Tissues, Gülinnaz Alper, Mehtap Çinar, Cenk Can, Gülriz Menteş, Biltan Ersöz, Akgün Evinç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Vitamin E and other antioxidants prevent or minimize oxidative damage in biological systems. The level of antioxidant defense sufficient to protect the organism from high free radical concentrations is one of the new horizons for Vitamin E research. The role of Vitamin E as a protective agent aganist oxidative stress was evaluated by meas-uring the antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) activities in different tissues of Swiss male albino rats aged two months. In this study, rats were divided to three groups; control (n=10), E 1 (n=5) which received 25 mg/kg. per day of Vitamin E, IM. for 10 days and E …

The Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Tsc10/Ybr265w Gene Encoding 3-Ketosphinganine Reductase Is Identified In A Screen For Temperature-Sensitive Suppressors Of The Ca2+-Sensitive Csg2Δ Mutant, Troy Beeler, Dagmar Bacikova, Ken Gable, Lisa Hopkins, Courtney Johnson, Harry Slife, Teresa Dunn

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Saccharomyces cerevisiae csg2Δ mutants accumulate the sphingolipid inositolphosphorylceramide, which renders the cells Ca2+-sensitive. Temperature-sensitive mutations that suppress the Ca2+ sensitivity of csg2Δ mutants were isolated and characterized to identify genes that encode sphingolipid synthesis enzymes. These temperature-sensitive csg2Δ suppressors (tsc) fall into 15 complementation groups. The TSC10/YBR265w gene was found to encode 3-ketosphinganine reductase, the enzyme that catalyzes the second step in the synthesis of phytosphingosine, the long chain base found in yeast sphingolipids. 3-Ketosphinganine reductase (Tsc10p) is essential for growth in the absence of exogenous dihydrosphingosine or phytosphingosine. Tsc10p is a member of the …

Disease And Water Supply: The Case Of Cholera In 19th Century Iran, Amir A. Afkhami Jan 1998

Disease And Water Supply: The Case Of Cholera In 19th Century Iran, Amir A. Afkhami

Medicine Faculty Publications

This paper explores why Iran was a particularly fertile ground for repeated visitation of cholera in the 19th century. Along with certain unique Iranian cultural and religious factors, the author demonstrates how Iranian urban ecology, particularly the qanat system, contributed to the fatal spread of the epidemic. These multi-faceted conditions, the author concludes, resulted in distinct modes of disease transmission and mortality in Iran.

Harnessing The Human Genome Through Legislative Restraint, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1998

Harnessing The Human Genome Through Legislative Restraint, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

The awesome predictive power of genetic medicine promises great advancements in not only the treatment of identifiable conditions but the prevention of their pathological manifestations. At the same time, the release and dissemination of this genetic or medical information poses a distinct risk of loss of privacy and stigmatization to carriers of genetic disorders. In order to safeguard the individual right of autonomy, privacy, confidentiality and informed consent-yet accommodate the legitimate interests of employers and insurers to obtain medical information relevant to their professional needs and economic responsibilities a balance must be struck legislatively at the federal and state levels …

Uncertainty And Variability Analysis In The Estimation Of Human Exposure To Mercury From Seafood Consumption Using Two-Dimensional Monte Carlo Simulations, J. Keith Bangerter Jan 1998

Uncertainty And Variability Analysis In The Estimation Of Human Exposure To Mercury From Seafood Consumption Using Two-Dimensional Monte Carlo Simulations, J. Keith Bangerter

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Fish and shellfish are a beneficial food source due to their high protein content, low saturated fat content, and low cholesterol content; they possess beneficial omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants such as vitamin E and selenium. Recent studies identified a decreased risk of sudden cardiac death in seafood consumers. Per capita seafood consumption increased 27% from 1975 to 1990, with nearly 95% of the U.S. population consuming some kind of fish or shellfish product each year. But seafood consumption may pose health risks which need to be weighed against benefits. One of potential risks is the toxicity of methylmercury. Mercury …

Clear Cell Sarcoma Of The Kidney And Congenital Mesoblastic Nephroma: Cellular And Molecular Characterization Of Primary Tumors, Tumor Cell Lines, And Nude Mouse Xenografts Delineate Wilms' Tumor-Distinct Histopathogenetic Properties, Noel Anderson Brownlee Jan 1998

Clear Cell Sarcoma Of The Kidney And Congenital Mesoblastic Nephroma: Cellular And Molecular Characterization Of Primary Tumors, Tumor Cell Lines, And Nude Mouse Xenografts Delineate Wilms' Tumor-Distinct Histopathogenetic Properties, Noel Anderson Brownlee

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK) and Congenital mesoblastic nephroma (CMN) are both pediatric renal tumors that differ from Wilms' tumor based on their distinctive histopathologic characteristics and clinical behavior. CCSK is a very malignant tumor characterized by a propensity for bone metastases, contrasting the relatively benign course characteristic of the majority of Wilms' tumors. CMN, in contrast, is a tumor of the newborn usually diagnosed within the first three months of life that is generally cured with surgery alone. To investigate further the cellular and molecular relationships of CCSK, CMN, and Wilms' tumor, a nude mouse xenograft and …

Awareness And Usage Of Alternative Medicine In The Elderly Black Population, Deborah Martin Burks Jan 1998

Awareness And Usage Of Alternative Medicine In The Elderly Black Population, Deborah Martin Burks

Theses

Alternative medicine covers a broad range of healing philosophies, approaches and therapies. When these therapies are used alone they are referred to as ' alternative'. When they are used with conventional therapies or other alternative therapies then they are referred to as complimentary.

Alternative medicine also embraces health beliefs and practices that fall outside of orthodox medicine. They offer the opportunity for an individual or case manager to explore alternative forms of healing when conventional treatment alone is not effective. Research has shown an increased interest in alternative medicine for the treatment of chronic illness.

The overall goal of this …

Complexities In Biomedical Decision-Making, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1998

Complexities In Biomedical Decision-Making, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Within the contemporary debate over medical ethics, without question the most striking weakness found is the lack of a basic yardstick against which either the "rightness" or "wrongness" of a physician's actions may be measured. No general agreement is to be found among physicians or ethicists acknowledging what ethical determinant the physician should or should not follow in a particular case. Yet, despite this conflict of uncertainties, a framework for principled decisionmaking does exist and can be found within the rubric of medical ethics.
