Method: The participants were 110 men and 103 women with alcohol-related problems recruited within 30 days of enrolling in treatment for substance abuse or dependence. Participants completed self-report measures of pretreatment violence, FHV, CCP, substance use and consequences, and demographics; a semi-structured interview was used to assess FHA. Results: Structural equation modeling (SEM) analyses revealed gender differences with regard to the influence of FHA …
Versatility From A Single Song: The Case Of The Nightingale Wren, Daniel Leger, Katherine E. Brooks, Judith E. O'Brien
Versatility From A Single Song: The Case Of The Nightingale Wren, Daniel Leger, Katherine E. Brooks, Judith E. O'Brien
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Versatility in song production of birds has drawn considerable attention since its description by Hartshorne (1956), who suggested that birds vary their vocal output to avoid habituation in listeners, especially if singing is extensive. The best-known route to song versatility involves creating permutations and combinations of song elements learned from neighbors or relatives, combined with improvisations (Nowicki et al. 1999). Birds may learn whole songs or individual song elements, which then may be arranged in novel ways.
Versatility might be achieved in other ways besides acquiring numerous song types. For example, individuals could shift the tempo of their songs by …
Antipredator Vigilance Of Juvenile And Adult Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels And The Role Of Nutritional Need, Cody Arenz, Daniel Leger
Antipredator Vigilance Of Juvenile And Adult Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrels And The Role Of Nutritional Need, Cody Arenz, Daniel Leger
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Juvenile thirteen-lined ground squirrels, Spermophilus tridecemlineatus, are less vigilant (i.e. they spend less time visually scanning the environment) than adults. To determine whether nutritional need was a potential cause of this difference, we supplemented two groups of free-ranging juveniles during the predispersal stage, while juveniles were still near and around the natal burrows. The high-energy food group (HEF: 11 squirrels) received peanut butter and oats while the low-energy food group (LEF: seven squirrels) received lettuce. Adults (14 squirrels) were also supplemented, but due to their greater home range sizes, it was not feasible to classify them as either HEF …

However, the use of nursing diagnoses was significantly higher among participants who were expected to use them as NP students (χ2= 22.012; p …
The Needs Of Family Members In Crisis, Melanie A. Burghgraef
The Needs Of Family Members In Crisis, Melanie A. Burghgraef
Masters Theses
The needs of family members of patients with severe brain injury were investigated using a descriptive-correlational design. A convenience sample of family members (N = 23) were surveyed with the Critical Care Family Needs Inventory (CCFNI). Need statements from the CCFNI were rank ordered, and a total score for the CCFNI was calculated. The majority of the top ranked needs consisted of assurance and information needs, which is consistent with other research using the CCFNI. Descriptive statistics were used to compare the results from this study with Lorenz’s study (1995).
Furthermore, this investigation attempted to reveal a relationship between family …
Mental Health In Oldest-Old Adults: An Investigation Of Self-Transcendence, Marsha Luchtman Harrison
Mental Health In Oldest-Old Adults: An Investigation Of Self-Transcendence, Marsha Luchtman Harrison
Masters Theses
This study explored Reed’s theory of self-transcendence as a potential developmental resource and correlate of well-being within the long term care population. Self-transcendence is a healthy maturation process of expanding one’s conceptual boundaries inwardly through increased self-understanding; outwardly through investing in relationships with others and the environment; and/or temporally by integrating perceptions of one’s past and future in a way that enhances the present. A descriptive correlational research design examined the level of self-transcendence and the relationship of self-transcendence to depression among nursing home residents. The sample of 51 oldest-old adults ranged from 80 to 103 years old.
Participants were …

The Redesignment Of An Acute Inpatient Dual Diagnosis Unit, Irene Harris Griggs
The Redesignment Of An Acute Inpatient Dual Diagnosis Unit, Irene Harris Griggs
Theses
This project will focus on the study of mental illness and chemical abuse/dependence as it has progressed into the entity of dual diagnosis or what experts consider co-existing or co-occurring disorders.
Research has revealed the increase in the number of individuals suffering from co-occurring illnesses since the early 1980's. Because this condition has become the norm rather than the exception, it becomes necessary to focus more clearly on individuals that are diagnosed with this illness and on the most effective treatment in order to assist the individual in recovery.
Individuals have had co-existing or co-occurring disorders prior to the early …

The Effects Of Sodium Selenite On The Antioxidative Defence Mechanism Of Human Hepatoma G_2 Cells, Kayahan Fişkin
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Human cells that live in biological harmony can become cancerous. As they do so, they engage in anaerobic respiration, undergo rapid cell growth and division according to nonmitotic rules, and important changes take place in their metabolism. We conducted several investigations in an effort to block or change the metabolic characteristics of cancer cells using a typical cancerous cell line. Specifically,we investigated the effects of sodium selenite (Na_2 SeO_ 3 ) on antioxidant enzyme activities and reduced glutathione levels in Hepatoma G_ 2 cells, cells that show rapid glutamine uptake and metabolism. A Hepatoma G_ 2 cell line was cultured …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The success rate of a repaired torn meniscus is not more than 70%. Gene transfer to healing soft tissues appears to be a feasible method for manipulating the healing process. In an attempt to evaluate the feasibility of gene transfer to meniscal tissue we tried to transfer a reporter gene ( Echerichia coli, b-galactosidase gene) by using HVJ-liposome mediated gene transfer. After performing complete radial tear on the medial meniscus of fifty 14-week-old male Wistar rats, HVJ-liposomes with DNA were injected into the femoral artery of 15 rats and into the knee joint of the other 15 rats. HVJ- liposomes …

Investigation Of Various Terminal Carbohydrate Structures In Apolipoproteins Of Human Serum Chylomicrons And Vldl, Tayfun Güldür, Tülay İleri̇ Büyükoğlu, Ramazan Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The roles of terminal carbohydrate moieties of serum glycoproteins in their recognition and uptake by receptors and in their rapid removal from the circulation are well established. However, little is known about the detailed structure of the terminal glycan chains in apolipoproteins and their compatibility with the known ligand specificity of carbohydrate recognition systems. The carbohydrate moieties of apolipoproteins in human serum chylomicrons and VLDL were examined. Chylomicrons and VLDL were isolated from the serum by ultracentrifugation for 1.6x10 ^6 g.min and 5.5x10 ^7 g.min respectively. The top 1.5cm fraction containing chylomicrons or VLDL was recovered. Following delipidization, apolipoproteins were …
