The focus of this study was to review existing literature and analyze a survey of professional opinion regarding how children with hearing loss caused by congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) function audiologically and educationally. This study proposes a benefit for adding CMV screening to the battery of tests included in the newborn screening protocol to improve educational outcomes of children deafened from CMV.
Using Visual Phonics To Supplement Articulation Intervention, Mara A. Hampton
Using Visual Phonics To Supplement Articulation Intervention, Mara A. Hampton
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an augmentation of traditional articulation intervention on the acquisition of speech sounds. The study examined the effect of Van Riper's traditional articulation intervention (Van Riper & Erickson, 1996) integrated with See the Sound/Visual Phonics (visual phonics) hand cues, in contrast to Van Riper's traditional articulation intervention alone. One child identified with a phonological disorder participated in a single subject multiple baseline across behaviors study. The subject was a bright, hard working two year-ten month old child who enjoyed all therapy sessions. During the first baseline/treatment phase, the child received …

Breaking Bad News In Healthcare Organizations: Application Of The Spikes Protocol, C. W. Vonbergen, Robert E. Stevens, David Loudon
Administrative Issues Journal
Organizational downsizing has increased exponentially worldwide and is also affecting the healthcare industry. It is one thing to speak abstractly of the need to reduce costs and quite another to actually tell a worker the bad news that he or she has been laid off. This paper offers practical advice to healthcare managers on conducting unpleasant conversations with employees based on a widely used medical model—the SPIKES protocol. This strategy has been extensively employed by physicians and other health care professionals who frequently communicate negative information to patients and is offered as an approach that can be easily and effectively …
How Am I Not Myself? A Semiotic Analysis Of Images, Michael G. Main
How Am I Not Myself? A Semiotic Analysis Of Images, Michael G. Main
HIM 1990-2015
There has been much debate in the history of philosophy aimed at determining what it is, exactly, that makes a person who and what she is. Varying theories have offered a wide range of concepts in pursuit of the answer to this question. Some thinkers, such as B.F. Skinner, have claimed that it is observable behavior patterns that determine who and what a person is. Yet other thinkers, such as Carl Jung, have attributed unconscious motivators as being determinative in deciphering who and what a person is. Jung claims that it is the conscious and unconscious working together that determines …

The Picture Exchange Communication System: Digital Photographs Versus Picture Symbols, Carmen Jonaitis
The Picture Exchange Communication System: Digital Photographs Versus Picture Symbols, Carmen Jonaitis
Dissertations
The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is an augmentative and alternative system (AAC) used to improve and increase communication for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disorders. Research addressing the efficacy of this system is increasing; however, there is limited information published that evaluates the picture type used for PECS instruction. A single-subject alternating treatments design was used to examine the role of iconicity, or how closely a symbol resembles its referent, in the acquisition of picture discrimination in the third phase of PECS. The purpose of this study was to compare how well children were able …
Different Aspects Of Intercultural Nonverbal Communication, Kifayat Aghayeva
Different Aspects Of Intercultural Nonverbal Communication, Kifayat Aghayeva
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
It is shown the ways how to manage nonverbal intercultural communication effectively and cultural, political and gender aspects of NVC are investigated in the article. Studies of nonverbal communication indicate that nonverbal communication is constantly used, whether or not people speak to each-other. Non-verbal communication can even alternate a verbal message through mimics, gestures and facial expressions, particularly when people do not speak the same language. A culturally-fluent approach to conflict means working over time to understand these and other ways communication varies across cultures, and applying these understandings in order to enhance relationships across differences. These features influences intercultural …

A Model For Easily Incorporating Team-Based Learning Into Nursing Education, Heidi A. Mennenga, Tish Smyer
College of Nursing Faculty Publications
A sense of urgency exists among nurse educators to determine the best possible teaching strategies to create a rich, engaging learning environment for students. With the calls for transformation, innovation, and excellence in nursing education from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, and the National League for Nursing, educators may determine that current teaching strategies fall short. Team-based learning, an innovative teaching strategy, offers educators a structured, student-centered learning environment and may be effective in teaching necessary skills to students. An overview of how this strategy fosters many of the essential …

Surgeons And Bureaucrats: An Interactive Research Experience At The World Health Organization, Hannah Lust

During a recent internship at a general hospital in my hometown of Dallas, I could occasionally be found lurking around the main surgical unit. I wanted to be surrounded by the atmosphere of saving lives by manipulating the tiniest capillaries, the most sensitive nerves, the most essential organs. The idea of racing against the clock to save a life, yet having to work with the utmost care is one that is unsettling and enthralling to me all at once. Surgery is infinitely intricate, exceedingly precise, and beautifully complex. And quite simply, it fascinates me. At the same time, I am …

The Effects Of Multimodal Collaboration Technology On Subjective Workload Profiles Of Tactical Air Battle Management Teams, Victor S. Finomore, Benjamin A. Knott, W. Todd Nelson, Scott M. Galster, Robert S. Bolia
International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2007
A tactical air battle management task required a team of two weapons directors, two strike operators, and a tanker operator to communicate with each other in order to coordinate offensive and defensive air attacks, and aerial refuelling. This study compared the impact of two types of communication modalities (Voice or Picture Chat) and the number of enemy targets (4 or 6) on team performance and perceived team workload. Three subjective workload scales were evaluated in their ability to characterize task difficulty, communication demands, and demands of the different team roles. The results are discussed with respects to the descriptive and …

International Art Therapy Program Development: An Exploratory Cultural Encounter In Ayacucho, Peru, Haley Johnstone
EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations
Humanitarian aid organizations, both domestic and international, provide health care, mental health services, education, and community development for traumatized children worldwide living in regions affected by political violence. Sparse information exists regarding the role of an art therapist within these organizations. The profession of art therapy lacks research specific to the benefits of intervention and program development within the context of an international humanitarian aid team. This thesis reviews the ethnographic research of an art therapy graduate student who explored the opportunities for art therapy within such a team.
Cultural competency was an essential component of the researcher’s success while …
The Use Of Art Therapy In Counseling Children, Laura Longo
The Use Of Art Therapy In Counseling Children, Laura Longo
Graduate Research Papers
Art is being used more and more by counselors working with children, particularly within the school setting because it allows for children to communicate nonverbally in a timely manner. "Art therapy in a school setting can offer children the opportunity to work through obstacles that are impeding their educational progress. It can facilitate appropriate social behaviors and promote healthy affective development" (Bush, 1997, p. 16).
The purpose of this paper is to explore how art is used in counseling children and examine specific techniques. Also, the author will focus on the stages of artistic development of children, the use of …
