A Survey Of The Hospital Experience Of The Isolated And Non-Isolated Patient, Rose Marie Olson Kuhn

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The descriptive survey was the method used to conduct the study to find differences in the amount of nurse contact between the isolated patient's and the non-isolated patient's hospital experience, and to explore their feelings concerning their hospitalization. Altered Body Image Following Radical Mastectomy, Julia Lee Anne Mcconnell Jun 1965

Altered Body Image Following Radical Mastectomy, Julia Lee Anne Mcconnell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to identify reactions and adjustments to the altered body image following radical mastectomy. It was felt that nurses could be of more assistance to women facing this experience if they knew and understood the common reactions which occur.

Other studies have indicated that major areas of adjustment focus upon dress and appearance. Sexual and social relationships, and curiosity of others. The disruption of a body image makes necessary certain adjustments in the individual's perceptions of himself.

The method of research in this study was descriptive survey with the use of partially structured interviews. Thirty-five …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

To determine if the woman who receives the continuous attendance of a nurse during the first stage of labor requires less analgesic medication than the woman who is given interrupted or intermittent nursing care, a study was made employing the experimental method with the parallel-group technique. Thirteen patients meeting the criteria of the study who received continuous nursing attendance during the first stage of labor by the nurse researcher were closely matched to thirteen patients from a group of one hundred seventy-three, whose nursing care was given by the staff personnel. Mayo Dental Morphology, Val K. Artress Jun 1965

Mayo Dental Morphology, Val K. Artress

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Mayo Indian of Sonora, Mexico, was selected for a study of dental morphology. The objectives of the investigation were to determine the extent to which the Mayo conformed to the four criteria of the Mongoloid dental master pattern, and to compare eight other specific tooth morphologic characteristics with like studies on Mongoloid and non-Mongoloid peoples. Plaster casts were made on a sample of forty-one Mayos.

The results of the study indicate that Mayos exhibit a 46 percent frequency of shovel-shape maxillary incisors, classifying "moderate shovel" and "shovel" together. The maxillary central-lateral width difference of 1.5 mm is small compared …

The Extent To Which Patients Follow Their Low-Cholesterol Diets, Beverly Jo Peterson Jun 1965

The Extent To Which Patients Follow Their Low-Cholesterol Diets, Beverly Jo Peterson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This exploratory study was conducted to discover to what extent patients follow their low-cholesterol diets. If they did not, the reasons were investigated. It was hoped that the findings would aid in defining areas of instruction which need greater emphasis when patients receive instruction concerning a low-cholesterol diet.

An interview guide was used as a data gathering tool. The dietitians at one private teaching hospital recorded all dietary prescriptions sent to them during the specified period and ten physicians were contacted for permission to include their patients in the study. The patients were then contacted by telephone and the interviews …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Lateral head x-rays were obtained on selected samples of 24 Chamula, 29 Mayo and 39 Navajo Indians for cephalometric comparison.

Cephalometric evaluation was carried out by means of the Bjork analysis. Mean values for each of the Indian groups were determined and compared with each other and with the mean values of a group of Swedish conscripts studied by Bjork. The mean values were statistically analyzed and and subjected to the Student's "t" test to determine the significant levels of differences.

Results revealed that in comparing the three Indian groups significant differences do appear. They are few and general concordance …

An Approach To Medical Education: The Medical College Of Virginia School Of Medicine Curriculum, Edwin F. Rosinski

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

After a relatively long interval in which the status quo was maintained, in the early 1950's American medical schools began to reappraise their educational programs. Many shortcomings of medical education which now have been corrected were cited as early as 1946. The Medical College of Virginia began a detailed study of its educational program. A curriculum has been designed and initiated, using the subject matter committee approach. The curriculum provides opportunity for electives, research, and free time. In conjunction with the revised curriculum, changes in grading procedures, examinations, and teaching methods have been made. A study to assess the effects …

Construction And Validation Of Six Mental Health Sub-Scales By Age, Sex, And Educational Status, Thomas James Boynton

Masters Theses

Chapter I

Introduction

Purpose of the Study

The topic considered in this thesis is the construction and validation of six mental health sub-scales which are based upon procedures controlling for age, sex, and educational status. Each item in a 22 item mental health scale is tested for validity by age, sex, and educational status. Six sub-scales, one for each dichotomy of the three social groups, are constructed from this procedure. The validity of these sub-scales is then tested via six different criteria of mental health. Finally, the validity of the six sub-scales, the original 22 item scale, and a related …

This study was done to learn how the incidence of falls was related to certain, selected factors such as ambulatory state, sex, location of occurrence and time of occurrence in the nursing home chosen for the study and to make recommendations for increasing the safety of nursing home patients.

The descriptive-survey was the method used in the study. The data were made available in the form of 235 incident reports which had been collected over a five-year period in the selected nursing home. There were 213 of these records which described falls of various types so the study was limited …

The Relationship Of Central Venous Pressure To Hemorrhage In Open Heart Surgery, Mable Reynolds Jun 1964

The Relationship Of Central Venous Pressure To Hemorrhage In Open Heart Surgery, Mable Reynolds

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The problem of this study was to review 100 open heart surgical cases in a selected hospital to determine the changes occurring in central venous pressure in relation to blood loss.

The review of literature revealed that central venous pressure is an important factor in determining immediate postoperative care of open heart surgical patients. If central venous pressure falls below the normal range of 5 to 10 centimeters of water, hemorrhage is suspected. If central venous pressure is elevated between 15 and 20 centimeters of water, cardiac tamponade is suspected.

The descriptive survey method of research was used. Medical records …
