Bridging The Gap: Analyzing Volunteerism Barriers To The International Humanitarian Ngos In Egypt, Heba Fouad

Theses and Dissertations

In Egypt, volunteerism, within international humanitarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs), functions in distinctive characteristics influenced by, among other things, cultural, educational, and economic factors. NGOs face challenges and obstacles in attracting motivated volunteers, engaging and training volunteers, as well as managing the staff-volunteers relationship, and implementing adequate human resources (HR) policies and strategies. In this context, this thesis seeks to bridge the knowledge gap of volunteerism challenges in Egypt, delving deep into understanding the barriers existing within the international humanitarian NGOs that directly and indirectly influence its volunteer engagement levels. The thesis also aims to understand the successful implementation of policies …

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) persons experience substantial mental health disparities throughout the life course, including increased vulnerability to depression and suicide. Few existing studies, however, have explored how pervasive experiences of SGM-related stigma, discrimination, and trauma (i.e., minority stress) contribute to adverse mental health outcomes among diverse sub-populations of SGM adults living in rural areas of the United States. This paper describes the protocol for a prospective cohort study, "Rural Exploration and Approaches for LGBTQ + Mental Health (REALM)," that will explore minority stress in relation to mental health conditions and suicidal behaviors among rural SGM adults. METHODS: …

Exploring The Impact Of Sufficient Childcare On Recruitment And Retention Of African American Women In Law Enforcement, Jo Anne Wallace

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Although African American women have made progress in multiple fields and careers, they remain underrepresented in the field of law enforcement. There has been a lot of research about women in law enforcement, but there has been little research to show the impact of lack of sufficient childcare on the recruitment and retention of African American women in law enforcement. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of African American female police applicants, recruits, and veteran officers and their perception of challenges and barriers in recruitment and retention when it comes to the lack …

“Burned Through”: Performing Social Justice In The Academy, Matthew P. Bejar, Saemi Lee, Terilyn C. Shigeno, Leslie K. Larsen

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In this chapter, we discuss and interrogate our experiences of infusing social justice into our research, teaching, and service amidst sexism, racism, and other intersectional forms of oppression that are prevalent within the academy and how this tension has tended to elicit performative social justice. First, we situate this chapter by summarizing our individual journeys with social justice in sport and exercise psychology (SEP). Second, we describe our collective journey as former graduate students and early career professionals. Third, we discuss the challenges that we encountered with respect to our social justice work. Fourth, we share the ways that we …

The Effects Of The Devaluation Of The Egyptian Pound On Auc Student Happiness, Mariam Kharboush, Nour Dabbour, Nelly Abdelwahed, Nour Heikal

The Undergraduate Research Journal

The aim of this research is to investigate the difference in measured happiness between students who pay the full tuition cost at the American University in Cairo (AUC) versus students who are on financial aid/scholarship in light of the devaluation of the Egyptian Pound. The literature review found that there are five key determinants for the happiness of university students: financial satisfaction, academic performance, leisure time, social support, and high levels of self-confidence and esteem. These five factors were used in the conceptual framework along with the utility theory. This study was executed through an online Google Forms survey that …

Analyzing The Impact Of Societal Perceptions Of Honor On Women's Involvement In The 1919 Revolution And The 2011 Revolution: A Comparative Study, Haya Shalaby Feb 2025

Analyzing The Impact Of Societal Perceptions Of Honor On Women's Involvement In The 1919 Revolution And The 2011 Revolution: A Comparative Study, Haya Shalaby

The Undergraduate Research Journal

Women have always been a part of the political sphere, visibly so or not. It was when they started getting more seen in the streets and protests that issues began to rise. The main factor behind that is honor, a complicated and multilayered subject, especially in the Middle East. The way it has been defined, at every point in time, relies on political and religious motives, with the ultimate goal of restricting and controlling the lives of women and their involvement in powerful, fundamental changes. Society perceives honor through its relation to biased religious perceptions, therefore, we find that public …

Beyond Pink And Plastic: A Critical Analysis Of Barbie (2023) Through The Lens Of Gender Performativity, Intersectionality, And Diverse Cultural Perspectives, Nelly K. Abdelwahed Feb 2025

Beyond Pink And Plastic: A Critical Analysis Of Barbie (2023) Through The Lens Of Gender Performativity, Intersectionality, And Diverse Cultural Perspectives, Nelly K. Abdelwahed

The Undergraduate Research Journal

This paper critically examines Barbie (2023), directed by Greta Gerwig, through the frameworks of Judith Butler’s gender performativity and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s intersectionality. By analyzing qualitative data from interviews with Egyptian university students, the study explores how the film challenges traditional gender norms while addressing its polarizing reception globally. While Barbie (2023) succeeds in sparking conversations about gender, identity, and societal expectations, its Western-centric narrative limits its resonance with non-Western audiences, particularly in the Middle East. The findings reveal a dichotomy: the film effectively critiques systemic inequalities and empowers women but simultaneously overlooks intersectional and diverse lived experiences. This analysis highlights …

Preparing Students For Civic Engagement: Cultivating Critical Dialogue In Stem Classrooms, Bryan Dewsbury, Carrie Diaz Eaton Feb 2025

Preparing Students For Civic Engagement: Cultivating Critical Dialogue In Stem Classrooms, Bryan Dewsbury, Carrie Diaz Eaton

All Faculty Scholarship

Thriving democracies require engaged citizens who possess skills pertaining to critical thinking, respectful discourse, and an appreciation of the value of difference. In this chapter, we discuss ways in which we cultivate these skills in STEM classrooms at two demographically different institutions of higher education and course types. Leaning on scholarship that shows the positive impacts of creating community and belonging, we make the case that civic participation is a critical value that should be agnostic to course type. Suggestions for transferability and institution-specific considerations will also be discussed.

A Critical Appraisal Of The Evidence On Racial Disproportionality In Special Education, Rachel E. Fish, Kenneth Shores, Joào M. Souto Maior Feb 2025

A Critical Appraisal Of The Evidence On Racial Disproportionality In Special Education, Rachel E. Fish, Kenneth Shores, Joào M. Souto Maior

Education and Child Study: Faculty Publications

This essay provides a two-pronged critical assessment of a subset of the literature on racial disproportionality in special education: that which aims to estimate racial disparities among otherwise similar children. This body of research has shown that Black students are less likely than comparable White students to receive special education, and has been interpreted by many to mean that current policies meant to reduce Black over-representation may be exacerbating inequality. Our essay argues that this subset of research has fundamental limitations in its covariate adjustment practices and its data quality, making “under-representation” findings questionable. We argue that caution and further …

Factors Related To Employment Of Previously Incarcerated Individuals, Toni Victoria Lewis Feb 2025

Factors Related To Employment Of Previously Incarcerated Individuals, Toni Victoria Lewis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Employment amongst previously incarcerated individuals is a concern of the criminal justice system because being employed is considered a mitigator of reincarceration. While there is research about the stigma of incarceration in gaining employment, little is known about the factors associated with individuals being able to find employment. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to identify whether there is a direct correlation between individual demographic features and employment status of individuals after 1 year or more of previously being incarcerated in North Carolina. General strain theory was the theoretical framework. The key research question focused on how release …

Doing More, Doing Better? A Critique Of The Criminalization Of Coercive Control, Janet Mosher, Shushanna Harris, Jennifer Koshan, Wanda Wiegers Feb 2025

Doing More, Doing Better? A Critique Of The Criminalization Of Coercive Control, Janet Mosher, Shushanna Harris, Jennifer Koshan, Wanda Wiegers

Journal of Law and Social Policy

Canada stands on the verge of ushering in a new criminal offence related to coercive control in the context of intimate relationships. In this paper we critically evaluate this development, drawing out lessons from past criminalization efforts and in particular, their impact on Black women and their communities. Our analysis raises significant questions about the potential of the proposed offence to deliver on the promises held out by its proponents. We argue that not only will these promises go largely unrealized, but the ongoing harms of criminalization–harms that manifest not only in the criminal law sphere but in child welfare …

Algebra 1 Teacher Experiences Implementing Illustrative Mathematics With Linguistically And Culturally Diverse Learners, Paula R. Potter Feb 2025

Algebra 1 Teacher Experiences Implementing Illustrative Mathematics With Linguistically And Culturally Diverse Learners, Paula R. Potter

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Without a curriculum that directly addresses the needs of all learners, students from linguistically and culturally diverse (LCD) backgrounds will continue to have inequitable educational experiences in high school mathematics. It is unknown if adopting the Illustrative Mathematics (IM) curriculum engages students from LCD backgrounds or will assist in narrowing the achievement gap between students of color and their White counterparts in a high school Algebra 1 course. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore teachers’ experiences implementing the IM Algebra 1 curriculum with LCD learners using situated cognition, problem-based learning, and a culturally relevant pedagogy framework. …

Culture And Attachment Preference Among Young Adults In Egypt And The United States, Musheera Anis Abdellatif Feb 2025

Culture And Attachment Preference Among Young Adults In Egypt And The United States, Musheera Anis Abdellatif

School of Education Faculty Publications

We explored the relationship between cultural values, recollected early caregiving experiences and young adult attachment preference. Young adults in Egypt (N = 209) and the United States (N = 554) ranked their current attachment preference, rated their collectivist and individualist beliefs, and recalled the relative contributions of their early caregivers. Egyptian students scored higher than US students on collectivism and recalled more involvement from non-parental caregivers. Most participants reported a preference hierarchy (82% Egypt & 84% US). Surprisingly, individualism was negatively associated with maternal attachment ratings and with having a clear principal attachment relationship, whereas higher collectivism predicted …

Displaced: An Ethnography Of Language And Identity Loss, Ariel Caroline Wilsey-Gopp Feb 2025

Displaced: An Ethnography Of Language And Identity Loss, Ariel Caroline Wilsey-Gopp

Dissertations and Theses

Through ethnography and personal narrative, I explore the language and identity loss of one person, my father, in order to understand the complex issues surrounding the effects of symbolic and structural violence on language and identity development. Through personal narrative, fieldwork, and interviews, I tell the story of one person, born in wartime during Nazi occupied Serbia, and follow the guiding questions: how does language get lost and what are the effects? Drawing on methodology set forth by empirical ethnographical work as well as more recent theory around epigenetics and trauma, my research synthesizes into focus three pillars of understanding …

Police Culture Influence On Mental Health Of Federal Law Enforcement Officers, Ania Amat Feb 2025

Police Culture Influence On Mental Health Of Federal Law Enforcement Officers, Ania Amat

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Occupational stressors are inherent in police work. Left unmitigated, these stressors may have deleterious effects on officers’ overall health. Police agencies throughout the country offer organizational resilience programs to aid officers navigate stressors. A constraint keeping officers from seeking mental health wellness are the unspoken social norms of police culture. Police culture stigmatizes mental health seeking behaviors, deterring officers from accessing organizational resilience programs. The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions and lived experiences of federal law enforcement officers regarding mental health-seeking behaviors and the influence of the police culture. Study participants included 16 federal law enforcement …

Reflexive Pedagogy: A Closer Look At Saudi College Students’ Responses To English Poetry, Haifa Almufayrij

International Journal for Research in Education

This study aims to explore Saudi college students’ analytical abilities by focusing on their engagement with English poetry through reflective learning practices. The study employed a multimodal approach and multimedia to interpret poetry, focusing on enhancing students' understanding of poetry while also examining the effectiveness of this instructional method. The poems selected for the study are from the British Romantic Period (1789–1830). It is a strategic implementation of a culturally appropriate pedagogy that utilises visual language to interpret poems in English. Independently constructing their own videos provided students with a chance to replace traditional written interpretation of poems in the …

Messianic Judaism And The Church, Robert C. Greer Feb 2025

Messianic Judaism And The Church, Robert C. Greer

Liberty Theological Review

One of the more curious phenomena within the Protestant Evangelical Church is Messianic Judaism. Its gospel is essentially the same as Protestant evangelicalism since Messianic Jews worship Jesus as Messiah, Savior and Lord. Yet many shun the label "Christian," preferring such titles as "fulfilled" or "completed Jews." Messianic Jews typically worship on Saturdays and observe a kosher diet. The symbol of the cross, which is ubiquitous in Protestant Evangelicalism and regarded as its most sacred symbol,, is problematic with many Messianic Jews. Messianic Judaism therefore maintains an arm's distance from Gentile Christianity. This paper is an exploration of that separation …
