Human trafficking is defined as the recruitment, harboring, transfer, transporting, and receipt of a person using force or manipulation. Sex trafficking refers to engagement in sexual activity against one's will followed by a lifestyle of physical and mental abuse. There are numerous social determinants that impact the health and wellbeing of youth. Due to a lack of community awareness regarding the risk factors associated with human trafficking, vulnerable youth are submissive to occupational injustice activities. The aim of this qualitative study is to educate Present Age Ministries (PAM) on the role and effectiveness of occupational therapy (OT) to gain approval …

Increasing Screening And Education For Human Trafficking In The Obstetric Department, Chibwe Caroline Powell
Doctoral Projects
Background: Human Trafficking, is a human rights violation with global public health implications. HT is associated with multiple health problems. Healthcare providers working in obstetrics departments are in a unique position to interact with trafficked persons. Lack of specific HT screening tools, training and education have been identified as barriers to recognizing HT victims.
Objectives: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to increase victim identification and referrals by improving screening through implementation of an interdisciplinary screening tool into the EHR workflow and providing HT education.
Methods: This project examined the impact of implementing a HT screening tool and …

Role Emerging Placements: Skills Development, Postgraduate Employment, And Career Pathways, Sobiya Syed, Andrea Duncan
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy educators are increasingly using role emerging placements (REPs) as a forum for students to develop skills required to work in emerging areas of practice. This study explores the impact of REPs on skill development, postgraduate employment, and career pathways for occupational therapists. An online survey was sent to occupational therapists across Canada (n = 1,763). Occupational therapists who had completed a REP responded to the online survey (n = 88). Descriptive analysis was used to examine trends in the quantitative data, and content analysis was used to code categories derived from qualitative survey data. Results indicated five skills …

Community-Based Occupational Therapy Practice Among Older Adults: A Delphi Study, Kristin Domville
Occupational Therapy Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This capstone project explores the socio-political environment of current and potential community-based occupational therapy (OT) services among community-dwelling older adults, including the current state of community-based OT practice and the current awareness of OT’s potential impact on health and wellness among community-dwelling older adults. The goal is to identify how to increase the presence of OT in community settings to decrease the occupational injustice among the older adult population. The research method used is the Delphi Method, an anonymous structured communication between experts in the field of community-based OT practice and the older adult population. Experts, provided real-world knowledge and …
Secondary Victimization Of Young Adult Female Sexual Assault Victims, Kristin M. Hunter
Secondary Victimization Of Young Adult Female Sexual Assault Victims, Kristin M. Hunter
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The response of community members and public institutions to the crimes of rape and sexual assault have been, historically, disappointing. Victims have felt forced into silence, ashamed to speak out about their experiences. More recently, with the rise of social media use and the #me-too movement, attention and interest has been garnered for this unique class of crimes and victims. It has been discovered that victims of sexual assault who report their assault to community members, police investigators, and health care workers are at risk of secondary victimization. This is a series of attitudes, behaviors, and practices that retraumatizes, shames, …

Assessing The Social Determinants Of Health Needs Of Older Lgbt People In The Greater Miami Valley Of Ohio, Jessica L. Sokol
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Background: While the older LGBT population continues to grow, they remain an underserved, invisible, and under-researched segment of the population. They experience many of the same risk and protective factors of all older adults, but discrimination is one social determinant of health that is quite prevalent among this community, causing lasting impacts on health.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the social determinants of health issues and needs of the aging LGBT population in Dayton, Ohio, in order to direct advocacy strategies and better targeting of local support efforts.
Methods: Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey …

Person-Environment Interactions: The Psychological Implications Of Behaviors, Confidence, And Self-Efficacy In Falls Management., Lisa S. Roberson
Occupational Therapy Doctorate Capstone Projects
Background: Strong evidence supports medication review and management, health and safety education, and home modifications as a holistic approach to falls prevention. Current research demonstrates that individual interventions reduce the risk of falls yet do not statistically reduce the number of falls (Gallo, Stelmach, Frigeri, & Ahn, 2018). The problem this Capstone project addressed was the limited psychological considerations, awareness of behaviors, confidence, and self-efficacy, as they relate to falls prevention. These psychological factors have not been previously studied in a single study.
Purpose: To determine the relationship or significance of psychological considerations as they relate to fall prevention. Increase …

Exploring Methods To Increase Hiv Testing In Kentucky, Chukwudi Yagazie Mbagwu
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
This project was conducted to develop a policy proposal that would increase HIV testing after evaluating current Kentucky Law and Regulations, current health insurance laws, studies on acceptability of different HIV test, barriers to testing from both providers and patients/individuals, and factors associated with positive likelihood of HIV testing. Based on these findings a proposal was developed that would require changing Kentucky regulations on providers communicating test results to patients, change in what form HIV testing would be covered under certain insurances, develop incentives for patients to be tested and report their results to their provider (and hence increasing surveillance …

Practice-Based Learning: Observations On One-Stop Centers In Refugee Settings, Chi-Chi Undie, Josephine Ngebeh, Jane Harriet Namwebya, Joanina Karugaba
Reproductive Health
One-Stop Centers’ (OSCs) have grown in popularity for responding to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in the East, Horn, and Great Lakes regions of Africa. OSCs attempt to provide an integrated, multisectoral response to SGBV survivors’ needs in one location. In resource-constrained settings, the most common services offered at OSCs include health care, psycho-social support, police and judicial services, as well as social support. Studies demonstrate that health-facility-based OSCs that are owned and run by health-facility staff are more effective than NGO-run OSCs in achieving the broadest range of desired health and legal outcomes for SGBV survivors. In collaboration with …

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop an occupational therapy intervention template that could be utilized at LaGrave on First. LaGrave on First is a new Housing First facility that opened in Grand Forks, ND during the summer of 2018. Literature reviews regarding occupational therapy and its' role with the homeless population were limited and challenging to find, especially with a Housing First emphasis. Within this scholarly project, the reviewed literature was used to develop an intervention guide that could be implemented in conjunction with other occupational therapy interventions for this population. The interventions were created for …
Understanding The Utilization Of Community-Based Services In Late Old Age: A Participatory Approach For Connecting Through The Communication Ecology, Carrie Leach
Wayne State University Dissertations
As the pool of eligible recipients continues to grow, understanding service system utilization and barriers can help ensure very old adults can access support from their communities when needed. Mounting research demonstrates that investment in community-based services to ensure seniors remain independent translates to saved government dollars. As a contributing researcher of a multi-year county-wide older adult needs assessment in Monroe County, Michigan, data collected from 1,870 people revealed a communication disjuncture between seniors and service providers. In response, officials convened a post assessment working group that focused on communication and outreach. Along with members of the Community Advisory Group …
Putting The T In Mlp: The Role Of Trust In Medical Legal Partnerships, Jenny Ajl
Putting The T In Mlp: The Role Of Trust In Medical Legal Partnerships, Jenny Ajl
Public Health Theses
The United States spends more on healthcare than any other country, while health outcomes lag behind many nations. This is often attributed to the disproportionately low spending on social services, and social determinants of health (SDOH) need to be addressed in order to improve the nation’s health. SDOH are increasingly understood to be key factors in predicting health outcomes. Medical legal partnerships (MLPs) are one intervention that seek to address SDOH. The MLP model comprises three core components: providing legal care for patients, improving systems of healthcare, and creating policy change outside the healthcare system. In this qualitative study, we …
A Crisis In Care: Evaluating The Causes And Consequences Of Burnout Among Emergency Physicians, Michael Allyn Wiechart
A Crisis In Care: Evaluating The Causes And Consequences Of Burnout Among Emergency Physicians, Michael Allyn Wiechart
All ETDs from UAB
For many physicians, the growing list of mandates and the unrelenting pace of change in today’s health care have taken a toll, leading to burnout. The consequences of burnout extend well beyond the impact on the individual provider, with physician burnout linked to a decrease in patient satisfaction, an increase in preventable medical errors, and increased levels of staff turnover. Consequently, the high rates of burnout reported among U.S. physicians might be considered not only as a symptom of dysfunction in the health care delivery system but also as a factor contributing to the dysfunction. While burnout exists to a …

This retrospective study surveyed decision-making and challenges among 78 gay cisgender male couples utilizing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and a gestational carrier. While most couples (67.1%) found the decision to actively pursue fertility treatment ‘not difficult’, 32.9% felt that it was ‘somewhat difficult’ or ‘very or extremely difficult’. Almost 30% of couples had not undertaken financial planning for treatment, which introduced delays of N2 years for 25.3% of participants. Conceiving twins was ‘important to very important’ in 52.3% of couples, and 84.2% of couples chose to transfer two embryos to ‘increase the odds’ or reach an ideal family size in a …

Examining Environmental Hazards In Rental Homes And Habitability Laws In Clark County, Nevada, Jorge Luis Bertran
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It is well established that home conditions are linked to the health outcomes of occupants. There are over 880,000 housing units in Clark County, Nevada; nearly half of those are renter-occupied units (ROUs). Currently, there is limited research on the characteristics of environmental hazards found in Clark County ROUs and the strength of habitability statutes created to protect tenants from substandard housing. Understanding how renters in Clark County are affected by environmental hazards in ROUs and the processes by which landlords and tenants resolve grievances related to those hazards would benefit public health. It would enhance the ability to quickly …

Introduction: This study estimated the U.S. lifetime per-victim cost and economic burden of intimate partner violence.
Methods: Data from previous studies were combined with 2012 U.S. National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey data in a mathematical model. Intimate partner violence was defined as contact sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking victimization with related impact (e.g., missed work days). Costs included attributable impaired health, lost productivity, and criminal justice costs from the societal perspective. Mean age at first victimization was assessed as 25 years. Future costs were discounted by 3%. The main outcome measures were the mean per-victim (female and …

Review Of A Politically Incorrect Feminist By Phyllis Chesler, Robert Brannon
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Phyllis Chesler’s new memoir, A Politically Incorrect Feminist (St. Martin's Press, 2018), spans almost fifty years of second-wave feminism. She names 100s of women, both famous and virtually unknown today who took part in the awakening and growing women’s movement, marching, sitting-in, writing and organizing since the 1960’s. It is the personal life story of one of the earliest feminist authors and political activists of the second-wave, the author of Women and Madness and 17 other books. Chelser discusses major issues of the time and provides an insider’s view of many of the feminism’s most significant public events. This big …

Kinship Diversion In The District Of Columbia: A Review Of Local Practice To Inform National Policy, Marla P. Spindel, Beth A. Stekler, Stephanie Ridgway Mcclellan
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
This article addresses a practice commonly known in the child welfare community as “kinship diversion,” where a child welfare agency informally places children with relatives as an alternative to foster care. While evidence predominantly shows that abused and neglected children have better outcomes when they are placed with relatives when they cannot remain safely at home, serious concerns about these children’s safety and well-being arise when the placement with relatives is informal. Indeed, it is often not understood that these same relatives can be approved as foster parents and can receive essential financial assistance and supportive services to help safely …

A Characterization Of The Medical-Legal Partnership (Mlp) Of Nebraska Medicine, Jordan Pieper
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
This research study was completed at Legal Aid of Nebraska’s Health, Education, and Law Project through the partnership it has formed working with Nebraska Medicine and Iowa Legal Aid. Traditionally, health and disease have always been viewed exclusively as "healthcare" issues. But with healthcare consistently growing towards holistic approaches to help patients, we now know there are deeper, structural conditions of society that can act as strong driving forces of a person's poor daily living conditions that can negatively impact health. The importance of a Medical-Legal Partnership is that it considers a patient's social determinants of health (SDHs). The goal …

Workers Compensation-Reported Injuries Among Security And Law Enforcement Personnel In The Private Versus Public Sectors, W. S. Witt, Terry L. Bunn, Svetla Slavova
Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center Faculty Publications
Background: Private and Public security and law enforcement (SLE) sectors perform multiple overlapping job duties.
Methods: Workers’ compensation (WC) SLE first reports of injury (FROI) data (2005–2015) were analyzed to describe injuries, identify differences in awarded WC benefits, and compare the probability of a FROI resulting in awarded benefits between Public and Private SLE. A Pearson’s chi-square test was utilized and reverse selection logistic regression was performed to estimate the odds ratio that a FROI would result in an awarded benefit for Private vs. Public SLE, while adjusting for relevant covariates.
Results: Private SLE had higher FROI percentages for younger …
Early Data From The Maine Ombudsman’S Hospital Advocacy Program: A Deeper Look At Difficult To Place Patients, Joseph Zamboni
Early Data From The Maine Ombudsman’S Hospital Advocacy Program: A Deeper Look At Difficult To Place Patients, Joseph Zamboni
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
There is little data available on the complex cause and effect of delayed hospital discharge; however, some evidence suggests that long-stay patients tend to be complex, older, and sicker. In Maine, a 2014 Maine Health Association report found complex hospital patients were waiting weeks, months and sometimes over a year in Maine Hospitals before accessing long-term services and supports. In response to these concerns around delayed discharge from hospitals, the First Regular Session of the 127th Maine Legislature created the Commission to study Difficult to Place Patients. The Commission ultimately passed Legislation that gave the Maine Long- Term Care Ombudsman …

Child Protection In Pakistan: Legislation & Implementation, Sana Younus, Aisha S Chachar, Ayesha Mian
Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Children are an integral part of any society. Their dependency on others for the fulfilment of their basic needs like food, shelter, education, safety and security makes them a vulnerable group. Society is judged on its ability to provide for the needs of the vulnerable. Provision of each of these needs is the responsibility of primary caregivers but requires assistance from multiple agencies working at the national level to ensure an effective delivery. Children’s rights can be defined as “the rights, which are concerned both with the protection of the individual child and with the creation of the conditions in …

Cold Genocide: Falun Gong In China, Maria Cheung, Torsten Trey, David Matas, Richard An
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
The article explores patterns of a cold genocide in the eradication campaign against Falun Gong. Falun Gong is a spiritual practice that has been targeted for eradication by the Chinese regime since 1999. In comparison to the documented cases of genocide, the genocide of Falun Gong stands out as anomalous because it is virtually ignored. The article seeks to elucidate the multi-faceted nature of this concealed genocide from an interdisciplinary perspective encompassing social work, medicine and law, In particular, the article demonstrates that the eradication campaign against Falun Gong is distinguishable as a cold genocide as it is: (1) multi-dimensional …
