An Examination Of The Relationship Between Population Density, Density Related Social Factors, And Physical Morbidities, Douglas King Huebner
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Population Density, Density Related Social Factors, And Physical Morbidities, Douglas King Huebner
Dissertations and Theses
The relationship between the number of persons per room in the home and the relative occurrence of stress-related morbidities of hospitalized patients is investigated. The social factors of age, social class, and level of social support also are examined as they relate to both density and morbidity type occurrence. The population under study is composed of all Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program members twenty years of age and older, discharged from Bess Kaiser Hospital during 1974, and whose diagnosed morbidity was included in specific morbidity categories. All data were obtained through the facilities of the Health Services Research Center, Kaiser Foundation …

Unique Characteristics And Implications Of Individual Health Profiles, George Z. Williams
Unique Characteristics And Implications Of Individual Health Profiles, George Z. Williams
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
During the era of the prescientific medicine, people were divided into two categories: those who were sick and those who were not sick. Physicians found it necessary to establish criteria to differentiate the ill and separate them according to symptoms and signs characteristic of classifiable diseases. Because of preoccupation with disease, the concept of the "normal" versus the pathological, as two opposite and definable conditions, was inevitable in the absence of scientific knowledge of human chemistry and physiology. This concept has carried over into the present era of scientific medicine.

Patients' Reactions To Witnessing Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation, Lynn Andree Finch
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to describe the reactions to stress in patients witnessing a cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, in order to determine if the witnessing patients' needs are being met adequately, and to determine the effect of a specific psychological stressor on patients.
All resuscitations ("STATS") done over a two-month period at Loma Linda University Medical Center, with oriented patients in the room, were observed and recorded on an Observation Guide. A Questionnaire was also solicited from medical-surgical nursing personnel who had observed "STATS" with witnessing patients in the last three months. The Guide and the Questionnaire were developed from …
The Duration Of The Effect Of Different Carbohydrates On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Judy L. Reeser
The Duration Of The Effect Of Different Carbohydrates On Neutrophilic Phagocytosis, Judy L. Reeser
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In order to determine the duration of the effect of glucose, fructose, sucrose, honey, starch, and orange juice on neutrophilic phagocytosis, 10 subjects underwent a complete series of carbohydrate tolerance tests. Blood samples were drawn at specific time periods following ingestion of 100 grams of each carbohydrate. Blood was then analyzed for glucose and phagocytic index (the mean number of bacteria engulfed per leukocyte); a red blood cell and white blood cell count and differential white cell count were done also on about 1/2 of the samples. In addition, 7 other subjects participated in a fasting study in which no …

Stress Urinary Incontinence In The Human Female: Gravity And Ecomorphologic Influences On Bladder And Urethral Function Of The Human Female, C. Paul Hodgkinson
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
This study was undertaken to determine if the biped stale of the human female constituted a stress force in urethrovesical physiological function. To arrive at realistic conclusions, the ecomorphologic changes incidental to the conquest of gravity by the vertebrates have been reviewed. Accepting the evolutionary precepts as expressed by Hobart Smith that "if all parts of the evolutionary chain were known, it would be impossible to draw a logical distinction between man and nonman, Romer slated "Bone for bone, muscle for muscle, organ for organ, almost every feature of the ape is repeated in the human body. The differences are …

Iatrogenic Disorders, Robert H. Moser
Iatrogenic Disorders, Robert H. Moser
MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly
The contemporary physician and his patient are riding the crest of the most dramatic expansion of medical capability in history. But the rapid proliferation of medical knowledge has not been entirely benign. Although our reverses have been minor in contrast to our advances, negative effects cannot be ignored. My discussion involves one aspect of this problem--the emergence of what I have called "Diseases of Medical Progress" (Moser, 1964).

Techniques Found In Administering Intragluteal Injection, Lee Lee Santimalapongse
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This descriptive survey study was concerned with the problem of determining whether nurses were using an acceptable technique in giving intragluteal injections. With the increase of intramuscular injections the complications and injuries resulting from the intragluteal injections have increased. A review of literature disclosed a general agreement among authorities that damage to nerves and muscles in the administration of intragluteal injections could be minimized by careful selection of the injection site and the use of proper technique. Fifty registered nurses giving intragluteal injections in two general hospitals were observed, guided by a check list from the criteria recommended by Zelman. …

The Effect Of Talking On Oral Thermometry, Norma E. Eldridge
The Effect Of Talking On Oral Thermometry, Norma E. Eldridge
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In this study an experiment was done to find out the effect of talking upon subsequent oral thermometry. A need for such a study was seen in 1) the apparent indifference of nursing service personnel to possible influences of talkativeness on sublingual temperature evaluations and 2) the seeming want of experimental evidence to indicate that talking does change the sublingual temperature. The sixty-one female students who volunteered as subjects were of the health professions at a selected university. For a thirty-minute period the subjects observed the restrictions of no eating, drinking, smoking, gum-chewing, mouth-breathing or talking. Three minute control oral …
An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Phonic Ability And Articulatory Defectiveness In University Students, Ralph W. Redel
An Investigation Into The Possible Relationship Between Phonic Ability And Articulatory Defectiveness In University Students, Ralph W. Redel
Masters Theses
Introduction
Background
In 1938, Travis and Rasmus commented on a particular problem in pathology. They said, "From every angle, an adult with a disorder of articulation presents a much more serious problem than a child with such a defect" (40. p. 218). Their statement is an appropriate current evaluation of the same problem. The American Speech and Hearing Association's Committee on the Midcentury White House Conference reported that the incidence of articulatory disorders was equal, 3.3% for both children and adults in the United States (1). In 1962, Dopheide found that 36 out of 2,087 of the freshman entering Western …
