Hyperthyroidism Due To A Thyrotropin-Secreting Pituitary Microadenoma, Jeffrey A. Jackson, Mitchell Smigiel, John F. Green Jr.

A 52-year-old man presented with elevated thyroid hormone levels and an inappropriately normal serum thyrotropin (TSH) (4.0 μU/mL: normal 0.5 to 6.0 μU/mL). Computed tomography suggested an intrasellar mass without radiographic sellar enlargement. Serum alpha-subunit was elevated with flat responses of both alpha-subunit and TSH to thyrotropin-releasing hormone. Transsphenoidal adenomectomy resulted in clinical and biochemical cure with subsequent development of hypothyroidism with otherwise preserved anterior pituitary function. Pathologic studies demonstrated an 8 mm typical thyrotroph cell adenoma. Early diagnosis of such tumors requires a high index of clinical suspicion and may be facilitated in the future by utilization of highly …

Doubling times of basal and stimulated calcitonin (CT) levels and of random carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels were compared over time in 11 patients with residual medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)—five with the sporadic MTC and six with the hereditary MTC. Four patients with an indolent form of the disease showed little change in CT levels over three to eight years and little change in CEA doubling times (42 to 70+ months). Seven patients showing rapid progression of disease had CT doubling times of three to 11 months and CEA doubling times of two to 12 months (however, one patient showed no …

This study demonstrates the use of submerged limb culture in teratologic testing. Pregnant mice were treated on day 11 of gestation (E11, plug date = E0) with 10, 20 or 40 mg of 5-fluorouracil (FU) per kg body weight. On E17, treated and untreated fetuses were examined for gross malformations and were fixed in 95% ethanol. Reduction of limb size and digital defects, including ectrodactyly (ED), syndactyly (SD), microdactyly and polydactyly were dose-dependent. In parallel studies, pregnant mice were treated on the morning of E11 and embryos were removed either 7h (E11) or 24h (E12) later for submerged limb culture. …

The hospital nurse is required to make decisions that affect the lives of patients. The American Nurses Association Code for Nurses ought to be the framework used by nurses in making those ethical decisions. The Code is not the primary basis for ethical decision making as has been shown in this and previous research. In this research the role of hospital employer, personal and professional values of staff nurses has been examined for their influence on the ethical decisions made by nurses. Physiologic levels of 3,3',5'-triiodothyronine (rT3) are generally believed to have minimal metabolic effects in the pituitary gland and other tissues. In the present studies, the regulatory role of rT3 and other thyroid hormones on iodothyronine 5'-deiodinase (I5'D) activity was studied in a growth hormone-producing rat pituitary tumor cell line (GH3 cells). I5'D activity was thiol-dependent and displayed nonlinear reaction kinetics suggesting the presence of two enzymatic processes, one having a low Michaelis constant (Km for thyroxine [T4] of 2 nM) and a second with a high Km value (0.9 microM). Several helminth parasites have been recovered from archaeological sites on the Colorado Plateau. These include Ascaris, Trichuris, Enterobius, Moniliformis, and tapeworms in the families Hymenolepidae and Taeniidae. The recovery of these animals demonstrates that cross-temporal: comparison of parasitism between different prehistoric lifestyles is possible. Such comparison might elucidate the effects of changing lifestyle and subsistance pattern on human parasitism.

Starvation in laboratory rodents results in significant alterations in thyroid hormone economy characterized by decreased circulating levels of thyroxine (T4) and 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine (T3) and a decline in serum thyrotropin (TSH) concentration. To investigate this apparent paradox, we have compared in fasted and hypothyroid animals the intracellular parameters mediating thyroid hormone action in the anterior pituitary gland. In vitro saturation analysis combined with quantitation of nuclear T3 content by radioimmunoassay allowed for characterization of pituitary nuclear T3 receptors and estimation of the endogenous fractional receptor occupancy. The purpose of the study was to compare different forms of stimuli for eliciting children's knowledge of their language. The study compared black-and-white drawings employing cues to depth, movement, and form. Pictures from various commercially available receptive and expressive language tests were selected. Three-dimensional representations of the same linguistic concepts were developed by the investigator. Selected test stimuli and their three-dimensional counterparts were administered to 30 preschool-age children. Responses to both stimuli were judged as correct or incorrect by the scoring conventions of the test from which the items were selected. In this paper the authors review perspectives related to Holocaust victims, limitations of Holocaust studies are discussed, and suggestions for viewing the long-range post-traumatic effects of the Holocaust upon its victims from social and behavioral science perspectives are advanced. The views of survivors toward post-war adjustment, drawn from interviews with Holocaust victims, are also presented.

The effects of a physiologically balanced mixture of amino acids on the synthesis of proteins has been investigated. The roles of leucine and tryptophan, both implicated in the regulation of protein synthesis, were also studied. The balance of amino acids is important under specific rate-limiting conditions; the physiological balance "protects" the protein synthesizing system from the stressed condition of leucine limitation. Leucine is an important regulator of protein synthesis and the tryptophan effect on translation is dependent on the concentration of leucine. Thus tryptophan is a secondary regulator. This study attempted to measure mental health status of Vietnamese refugees in Utah County, Utah. The test instrument used was the Cornell Medical Index (CMI). Two subproblems were considered: First, to see if refugee complaints on the CMI were predominantly physiological or psychological. Second, to see if there was a relationship between CMI scores and a related list of demographic variables.

Results showed the mean CMI score for the sample under study was well above the suggested score indicative of possible psychological dysfunction. For 80% of participants, psychological complaints were predominant over physical complaints. The only variables showing a relationship …

Varying techniques of measurement coupled with lack of sufficient data have presented great difficulties in the comparison of dental arch dimensions obtained by different workers. Several authors have attempted to delineate the arches. Lavelle et al measured the dental arches of adults from several different ethnic groups and found little difference between the modern British Caucasian, Australian aborigines, and North American Indians. They did, however, see considerable differences between these modern populations and a group of Anglo-Saxons and a group of West Africans.

High relative humidity (R.H.) and a high moisture diet were tested as stressors in the incidence of nuclear polyhedrosis virus (NPV) disease of larvae of Porthetria dispar (L.). Relative humidity was shown to have no effect on the appearance of NPV disease in larvae reared in the laboratory. However, a high mortality from other causes was sustained by a group of larvae subjected to both high R.H. and a high moisture diet. The absence of NPV disease during the first larval instar period confirmed earlier findings that effective egg sanitization virtually eliminates NPV disease. The purpose of this study was to determine what sociocultural, sociodemographic, and sociopsychological factors the Sisters in four Wards in the Taipei Taiwan Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints perceived as keeping them from using the health services during the period from June 1975 to May 1976.

Forty-five Sisters, age twenty-one and older, were surveyed by a written questionnaire during Relief Society meetings during the last week in June and the first week in July 1966.

The literature was used to establish two premises: that cities are noisy environments, and that noise-free societies have less coronary artery disease (CAD) than do industrialized sections of the world.
