An Examination Of The Relationship Between Population Density, Density Related Social Factors, And Physical Morbidities, Douglas King Huebner

The relationship between the number of persons per room in the home and the relative occurrence of stress-related morbidities of hospitalized patients is investigated. The social factors of age, social class, and level of social support also are examined as they relate to both density and morbidity type occurrence. The population under study is composed of all Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program members twenty years of age and older, discharged from Bess Kaiser Hospital during 1974, and whose diagnosed morbidity was included in specific morbidity categories. Morphological Characteristics Of The Pre-Columbian Dentition I. Shovel-Shaped Incisors, Carabelli's Cusp, And Protostylid, Danny R. Sawyer, Marvin J. Allison, Richard P. Elzay, Alejandro Pezzia

This Peruvian-American cooperative study of paleopathology of the pre-Columbian Peruvian cultures of Southern Peru began in 1971. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the medical and dental health status of these cultures which date from 600 BC to the Spanish conquest. While several authors such as Leigh, Moodie, Stewart, and Goaz and Miller have studied the dental morphology of Northern Peruvians, the paleodontology and oral paleopathology of the Southern Peruvians has not been recorded. This paper reports dental findings on the morphologic characteristics of the shovel-shaped incisor, Carabelli’s cusp, and protostylid.

[From the Introduction] This thesis is concerned with two aspects of spontaneous regression of retinoblastoma: 1) Retinoblastoma may lack TAF or has inhibitory factor to TAF and spontaneous regression occurs by vascular insufficiency; 2) Retinoblastoma cells undergo necrosis with an increased susceptibility when the calcium concentration is elevated.

A descriptive-comparative study was done to examine the relationship between stressful life events and mental-illness and wellness behaviors, and the coping methods used by individuals exhibiting each behavior.

Data collection included the use of the Social Readjustment Rating Scale and a coping scale administered to the experimental and control samples. The experimental group consisted of thirty psychiatric in-patients of three general hospitals who were oriented in three spheres. Subjects of the control group had no history of psychiatric illness, were currently not receiving medical treatment, and were adequately functioning in a socially accepted role. An Evaluation Of The Cytotoxicity Of Root Canal Filling Materials On Tissue Culture Cells In Vitro: Grossman's Sealer, N2 Permanent, Rickert's Sealer, And Cavit, Donald D. Antrim

An in vitro study using radioactively-labeled tissue culture cells was conducted over a seven-month period on Grossman's sealer, Rickert's sealer, N₂ Permanent, and Cavit to determine the lasting and relative tissue toxicity of these materials.

From this study it was observed that all materials possess lasting tissue toxicity. When relative toxicity is considered, Grossman's is the most toxic, followed by N₂, Rickert's and Cavit in descending order of toxicity. Both Grossman's and N₂ would be considered highly toxic, with Rickert's displaying moderate toxicity. Cavit would be considered mild to moderate in toxicity.

These fungi, commonly called "water molds", are of particular interest as many are potential parasites of fish, crustaceans, and other aquatic plant and animal life. It is of considerable interest to students of the fungi and of practical value to the fisheries biologists and environmentalists to have available a means of identification for these organisms.

Evaluation of these aspects would result in the discovery of faults and strengths in the program, thereby enabling the faculty to improve the curriculum annually. The school utilizes student evaluations of each course following its completion to determine how well the course objectives were fulfilled. The development of tissue culture electrophysiology has been hindered by these numerous technological problems. The function of this thesis was to identify and propose solutions to these technological problems and concurrently develop a system for prolonged intracellular GME monitoring (30 to 40 hours) of membrane parameters from cells grown in tissue culture.

Continuous flow algal cultures were grown under three different growth conditions using secondary sewage treatment plant effluent as the growth medium. The only variable within each run was the hydraulic residence time. The concentrations of growth regulating nutrients were varied between the runs so comparisons of the algal mass, composition, nutrient uptake, and genera could be made. The importance of CO₂ availability for algal growth was also studied. A kinetic theory which based algal growth on cellular nutrient concentration was verified. In order to obtain proper muscle development in tissue culture, certain conditions must prevail. There is a delicate balance of factors, and elimination of even one of these factors leads to poor and improper development. Muscle cells grown in the absence of fibroblasts usually fail to differentiate. Therefore, proper development depends upon the presence of two cell types: myoblasts and fibroblasts. Investigators have demonstrated that the fibroblasts are necessary in that they produce collagen which is necessary for proper muscle development. It is apparent in both lay and professional literature that we are living in an age of social crises. Clearly the shortage of resources and the problems of pollution and poverty would be greatly ameliorated if our birth rate were controlled. Despite this, a survey of psychological literature reveals a paucity of articles on birth control. Psychologists largely have their heads in the sand with regard to research to understand factors associated with childbearing. Meanwhile, the birth rate soars on and it is increasingly obvious that something must be done.

Newer diagnostic techniques, including radioisotope liver scans, bacteriologic culture procedures for anaerobes, serologic tests for amebiasis, ultrasonic echograms, and hepatic arteriography, permit more specific identification and localization of hepatic abscesses. Large pyogenic abscesses are of particular Importance to surgeons; are frequently caused by anaerobic organisms; and require early, direct, adequate, and sufficiently prolonged surgical drainage. The clinician should be alert also to recognition and management of the primary lesion responsible for the hepatic abscess, associated abscesses elsewhere, and the possible presence of an underlying liver neoplasm.

The chemical composition of algae grown in batch culture depends mainly on environmental conditions, nutrient availability, presence of predators, cell age, and species. The effects of nutrient availability and cell age on the composition of three unialgal cultures (algae + bacteria) and one hetergeneous culture (algae + bacteria + microscopic animals) were evaluated. The cultures were grown in batch culture under both nutrient-abundant and nutrient deficient conditions and the changes in compositions were observed. Luxurious uptake where nutrients are incorporated into cellular protoplasm at levels greater than those necessary for growth, and super-luxurious uptake, where some nutrients are stored rather …

Samples of aqueous humor were obtained from the anterior chamber of patients with uveitis. Bacterial L-forms, or cell wall deficient forms, were recovered from 11 of 19 eyes with unexplained uveitis. These bacterial variants were cultured on newer, highly specialized media and stained with acridine orange. This stain demonstrates fluorescence of nucleic acids under UV microscopy.

This experiment was designed to evaluate an oral surgical dressing which may be used as an aid to healing tissue. The parameters of evaluation were directed toward wound healing enhancement, duration, and stability of the bandage. A histological evaluation of the surgical wounds protected with the bandage as compared to the control wounds was made.

The Nature Of Bone Resorption And Formation In Normalcy And Disease, Bruce N. Epker, Harold M. Frost

Classically, Howship's lacunae and osteoid seams or tissue have been used for microscopic identification of sites of bone osteoclastic and osteoblastic cell activity respectively. Recent transmitted light and blue light fluorescence microscopic study of fresh, undemineralized, specially stained and tetracycline labeled bone specimens have supported this use of these parameters of bone resorption and formation. Reports that the osteoclast is not required for bone resorption are evaluated here; it is concluded that no evidence exsists for resorption of bone tissue without osteoclasts. This does not apply to the perilacunar phenomena observed in certain well-defined situations.

Infections in newborn infants should be suspected and treatment started whenever birth is prolonged following rupture of the membranes. These studies show that risk increases as rupture time gets longer. Selected antibiotics at proper dosages are recommended as preventive measures.

A Tissue Culture Perfusion Chamber With A Substratum Of Reconstituted Collagen, Thomas M. Harris

A tissue culture chamber is described that introduces the concept of a fixed platform within a "perfusion type" chamber. The platform is made of stainless steel mesh covered with a membrane of reconstituted collagen. The collagen membrane serves as the supporting substratum for the cultured tissue and is of such an optical quality as to permit phase-contrast microscopic observation of the tissue. The perfusion chamber is a Sykes-Moore tissue culture chamber modified to twice its normal depth to receive the screen.
