Factors Hindering Public Health Nursing Of Tuberculosis Patients, Lida Mae Yeoman Jun 1966

Factors Hindering Public Health Nursing Of Tuberculosis Patients, Lida Mae Yeoman

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was conducted to identify some of the factors that interfere or hinder the public health nursing of the private physician's tuberculosis patient. Of fifty-one tuberculosis patients who received their care from private physicians, nineteen were interviewed. The sample was limited because patients had moved and because patient or physician refused to participate. Data were collected by use of an interview in the home. The overall findings indicated that the private physicians tuberculosis patient recognized the role of the public health nurse and the responsibility of the Health Department but resented its authority. It would appear that the patients …

The Image Of The Public Health Nurse As Seen By The Medically Indigent Prenatal Patient, Arlene Parrish Gray, Corlene Waddell Lambeth May 1966

The Image Of The Public Health Nurse As Seen By The Medically Indigent Prenatal Patient, Arlene Parrish Gray, Corlene Waddell Lambeth

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the image of the public health nurse as seen by the medically indigent prenatal patient who has had a public health nursing visit in the home. With this knowledge, she could plan a more effective approach, provide better services, and be better prepared to meet the needs of the prenatal patient. This study was aimed to explore the patients' concepts of the public health nurse's personal characteristics, her functions, and comparison of her image with other helping professions and to identify influencing factors affecting image formation. The exploratory approach was used and …

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul Apr 1966

Quantitative Calculation Of Gas Chromatographic Peaks In Pesticide Residue Analyses, Jean A. Gaul

United States Food and Drug Administration: Publications

Comparison of five methods for calculating gas chromatographic peaks (disc integration, triangulation, peak height X width at half height, Rt X peak height, and peak height) shows no significant difference in the calculated results when aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, and dieldrin are injected into a gas chromatograph equipped with electron capture detector.

Problems are associated with the calculation of toxaphene, chlordane, DDT, and BHC. The author makes suggestions for calculating these four residues when present individually and in combinations with other pesticides. Use of the last four toxaphene peaks compares favorably with results obtained by using the entire toxaphene curve. …

A Systematic Approach To The Evaluation And Treatment Of Marital Problems, George Kriegman Jan 1966

A Systematic Approach To The Evaluation And Treatment Of Marital Problems, George Kriegman

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The collaboration of two persons of the opposite sex is a part of the natural sequence of human development and involves the integration of psychodynamic factors and group dynamics. Marriage can be classified into three general types: harmonious, adjusted, and disharmonious. The disharmonious group is classified according to the predominant security operations of the spouse into seven categories. The group dynamics are presented in terms of role functions following Spiegel's (1957) classification of role discrepancies and role resolution, emphasizing the concepts of complementarity and equilibration. The diagnostic evaluation of the personality structure is outlined in terms of the operative level …

Recollections Of Professor Otto Meyerhof, Chalmers L. Gemmill

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Professor Meyerhof's laboratory represented the Institute approach with all of the workers devoting their attention to the several aspects of the single problem of muscle metabolism. The number of papers (Meyerhof, 1930) and the great contributions from this laboratory represent the results of the dominant personality of one man. The tributes (Nachmansohn, 1950) paid to him in 1950 were published in Metabolism and Function. Comparable tributes are now being given to Dr. Fischer upon his retirement.

Self-Diffusion In Sodium Single Crystals, Rama M. Aiyawar, Addison D. Campbell Jan 1966

Self-Diffusion In Sodium Single Crystals, Rama M. Aiyawar, Addison D. Campbell

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The objective of this investigation was the study of self-diffusion in single-crystal sodium using tracer techniques and the determination of the diffusion constant and activation energy. Precise values of these quantities can be obtained by using Fick's second law of diffusion and the relation D = D₀ exp (- Q/RT) provided the concentration of the diffusing isotope is kept very small. However, in the above relation, the quanties D₀ (diffusion constant) and Q (activation energy) may vary with the composition of the crystal and with impurity content but are independent of temperature.

The Changing Pattern Of General Practice And Its Educational Implications, Frederick J. Spencer Jan 1966

The Changing Pattern Of General Practice And Its Educational Implications, Frederick J. Spencer

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The results of a mail questionnaire sent to members of the Virginia Academy of General Practice demonstrate the changes occurring in the content of family practice. Practitioners in small towns practice more obstetrics and less internal medicine than those in large cities, and conversely. The implications for training in general practice are discussed.

Ambulatory Services In Teaching Hospitals, Gabriel Hilkovitz Jan 1966

Ambulatory Services In Teaching Hospitals, Gabriel Hilkovitz

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The outpatient clinics and emergency rooms of metropolitan teaching hospitals have been criticized severely in recent years for providing poor patient care. In most teaching hospitals the ratio between outpatients and inpatients is three to one; therefore, if the critics are right, 75% of the patients who obtain medical care at the teaching hospital, are not getting the best that medicine has to offer today.

A Simple Rapid Method For Determining Oxyhemoglobin Affinity: Illustration Using Blood From The Rhesus Monkey, Jack D. Burke Jan 1966

A Simple Rapid Method For Determining Oxyhemoglobin Affinity: Illustration Using Blood From The Rhesus Monkey, Jack D. Burke

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Blood was obtained by cardiac puncture from the Rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). Hemolysates were prepared by filtration and centrifugation at 20,000 X g at 4 C. Oxyhemoglobin affinity curves were determined by a simplified spectrophotometric procedure on hemolysates diluted with phosphate buffers at pH of 7.4 and 6.8, and at an ionic strength of 0.3. The spectrophotometric readings were made at a wavelength of 640mμ and at a temperature of 23 C. The oxygen pressure at one-half saturation (P₅₀) for Rhesus homoglobin at a pH of 7.4 was 15 mm Hg, and at the more acid pH of 6.8, 23 …

Editorial: Responsibilities Of Scientists--A Closer Look, Fairfield Goodale Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

From a reading of today's lay and scientific press, one must conclude that scientists are most important people. And, indeed, the signs of their beneficence are on every hand--rapid travel, instant communication, globe-encircling rockets, moon probes, food surpluses, longer life spans, and all manner of creature comforts which by now are taken for granted. Verily, ours is the age of scientific marvels and we are in the debt of those who have made it possible.

The Future Effect Of The Computer And The Research Scientist On Medical Practice, Edward N. Brandt Jr. Jan 1966

The Future Effect Of The Computer And The Research Scientist On Medical Practice, Edward N. Brandt Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The computer is here. It has become a part of medicine. We have talked for a day and a half now about some of the applications of computers in medicine, and of the future of at least some of these applications. There is a language problem in communicating with computers, but certainly the future is going to see a medical language, comparable to the scientific language Fortran, built to enable physicians to communicate with the computer. The real advancements in computer application depend at least in part upon active use by physicians of computers. In closing, let me summarize by …
