The Performance Of Trained And Untrained Listeners In Rating Defective /R/ Along A Continuum, Mary Ann Dostal Jan 1967

The Performance Of Trained And Untrained Listeners In Rating Defective /R/ Along A Continuum, Mary Ann Dostal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Modification of deviant speech patterns begins with identification of the factors responsible for the deviancy. Agreement between speech clinicians (trained listeners) and parents and teachers (untrained listeners) on the nature of errors may be important in a successful clinical services program. Previous studies investigated differences between trained and untrained listeners in the number of "correct-incorrect" decisions they made about speech sounds. This study dealt with the ability of listeners to rate defective /r/ sounds along a r--w continuum. Two groups of listeners were used; a trained group made up of twelve graduate speech clinicians enrolled in a summer session at …

A Rhetorical Study Of The Life Line Radio Broadcasts, Arlee Wayne Johnson

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

For more than a decade the American public has been discussing the merits of the philosophy of the radical right wing in American politics. This debate is not surprising when statements such as these by one of the foremost leaders of the radical right are examined:

The Fecal Shedding Of Listeria Monocytogenes By Conventional And "Germ Free" Mice, Margaret Joyce Ramsay Sep 1966

The Fecal Shedding Of Listeria Monocytogenes By Conventional And "Germ Free" Mice, Margaret Joyce Ramsay

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A series of experiments involving Listeria monocytogenes was undertaken to study first the fecal shedding of Listeria by conventional mice challenged intraperitoneally with Listeria and second the fecal shedding and ability to survive of germ free mice with similar challenge. In addition, mites infesting Listeria infected mice were cultured for their possible contamination by Listeria.

Conventional mice were challenged intraperitoneally with a single near LD50 dose of Listeria. Fecal Listeria were detected by collecting specimens from each mouse daily for the first 4 days and every second day thereafter. The feces was held at 7°C for 14 …

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Senate Speeches On The 1963 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, Timothy A. Browning Aug 1966

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Selected Senate Speeches On The 1963 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, Timothy A. Browning

Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs

This paper is a rhetorical analysis of the Senate debate over ratification of the 1963 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. In July, 1963, most Americans seemed to favor ratification of the treaty, but Senate administration forces were not certain that they could muster the necessary votes for ratification. By September, although public opinion had begun to shift against the treaty, the Senate voted overwhelmingly for ratification. The motion for ratification received 13 votes over the necessary two-thirds.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effectiveness of the speakers for the opposing sides, and to determine as much as is …

An Examination Of The Attitudes Of Students In Clinical Training Toward Concepts Judged Important To The Therapeutic Process, David B. Ingram Aug 1966

An Examination Of The Attitudes Of Students In Clinical Training Toward Concepts Judged Important To The Therapeutic Process, David B. Ingram

Masters Theses

The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

This study is generally concerned with an evaluation of the proficiencies of speech therapists in training. The importance of this area, while obvious, has received little formal recognition in the field of speech pathology. That this topic has not been the concern of more research may be understood when we consider a contemporary and authoritative definition of the word 'therapy'. Colby (5, p. 95) states that therapy is: "...a practical art, a craft like agriculture, or medicine or wine making in which an artisan relies on an incomplete, fragmentary of knowledge and …

Survey Of Knowledge Of Fifty Registered Professional Nurses Regarding Selected Factors Of Indirect Blood Pressure Measurement, Audrey Gayle Krueger Aug 1966

Survey Of Knowledge Of Fifty Registered Professional Nurses Regarding Selected Factors Of Indirect Blood Pressure Measurement, Audrey Gayle Krueger

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was concerned with determining the knowledge registered professional nurses had regarding selected factors that contributed to variations in the indirect measurement of blood pressure. It was thought that assessment of the nurses' knowledge could contribute to more effective nursing services by disclosing areas of weakness which could be strengthened by hospital in-service and nursing education. Literature was reviewed on the methods of measurement in current use, common errors encountered in indirect measures, and selected factors that influence blood pressure readings, i.e., cuff width, emotions and activities, obesity versus thinness, position of the subject, inflation and deflation of cuff …

Acquisition Of Health Knowledge In Selected Hong Kong Secondary Schools, Anne D. Lindt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The exploratory survey method was used to determine the extent to whole scientific knowledge, related to principles and practices of healthful living, was enhanced during the secondary school education of students attending four Seventh-day Adventist secondary schools in Hong Kong. The tool, in the form of a health knowledge test designed to fit the cultural patterns of the population, was applied to 358 Form I (grade 7) and Form V (grade 11) students of the specified schools. Individual scores were computed and comparative analyses done on scores of groups of students representing the two different educational levels, sex differences, two …

An Investigation Of The Use Of The Semantic Differential For Assessing Reactions To Stuttering Behavior, Douglas J. Spurlock Aug 1966

An Investigation Of The Use Of The Semantic Differential For Assessing Reactions To Stuttering Behavior, Douglas J. Spurlock

Masters Theses

Introduction

The professional literature in the field of speech pathology contains a great many references to stuttering. A large part of this literature on stuttering has dealt with the problem of severity. The importance of the concept severity of stuttering can be viewed in its relation to the broad theoretical constructs in the field of stuttering. Severity is a way of quantifying the extent of abnormality or degree of interference with the normal speech process. To say that one stutter is more severe than another is to say that he appears to be more abnormal than the other. Severity of …

Principles Understood By Nurses Relative To The Care Of Tracheostomy Patients, Mary Ann Featherstone Jun 1966

Principles Understood By Nurses Relative To The Care Of Tracheostomy Patients, Mary Ann Featherstone

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive study was conducted to determine what scientific principles were understood by nurses relative to the care of tracheostomy patients. A random sample of thirty-five nurses: twenty-four from medical-surgical units, three from pediatric units, and eight nurses from intensive care units, were selected from nurses working at two community hospitals. The interview method was used to obtain the data. An interview guide was developed from information gained in the literature review and findings of the pilot study.

The findings of the study indicated that the nurses realized speech would be lost with tracheostomy, but other essential physiological changes were …

The Relationship Between Stress And Communication When Receiving An Injection, Ulla Maria Sundell Jun 1966

The Relationship Between Stress And Communication When Receiving An Injection, Ulla Maria Sundell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive research study was conducted on forty-five patients. The study was guided by the null hypotheses that: (1) positive communication will create more stress than by-talk communications (2) by-talk communication will create more stress than negative communications, and (3) positive communication will create more stress than negative communication. The purpose of the study was to find out the patients' reaction to nurses' controlled communication as they administered injections to the patients. Known factors that might have influenced the findings were eliminated. The Subjective Stress Scale checklist developed by Kerle and Bialek was used to measure stress. Collection of the …

Two Attempted Investigations Into The Complexities Of Staphylococcal Disease, Harriet M. Sands Jun 1966

Two Attempted Investigations Into The Complexities Of Staphylococcal Disease, Harriet M. Sands

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Two investigations were attempted to add insight into the multiple problems related to staphylococcal infections. A comparison study was made of the hospital expenses of a group of hospitalized patients whose apparently clean surgical wounds developed staphylococci, and a comparable group whose surgical wounds healed without infection.

A review of approximately one hundred medical records for the pilot study revealed three instances of staphylococcal infection in apparently clean surgical wounds. The three patients required 239 days of hospitalization at a total hospital cost of $13,702.11. The three comparable patients whose surgical wounds remained clean required 27 days hospitalization at a …
