The Treatment Of Anxiety, John J. Schwab, Nancy H. Mcginnis Jan 1967

The Treatment Of Anxiety, John J. Schwab, Nancy H. Mcginnis

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Rational therapy requires accurate diagnosis. When we apply this precept to anxiety a fundamental question arises. Is anxiety an illness in terms of the now berated medical model which holds that an illness has a cause, a natural history, and hopefully a cure? Or is anxiety a basic aspect of the human condition, an innate pattern of response which becomes pathological when stress, induced by physiologic and social forces, is magnified out of proportion to the original stimulus? If the latter is true, then stress and social interactions are the causative factors, the anxiety only a reaction. Logically then, the …

The Physician As Humanist, George T. Harrell Jan 1967

The Physician As Humanist, George T. Harrell

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

It is appropriate that this lecture should be given in a building which is devoted to the broader aspects of living and which is located on the campus of an institution which treats bodily ills. This institution began as part of a liberal arts college. This tradition in the state of Virginia started with Mr. Jefferson when the University was established at Charlottesville. He decreed that one of the first chairs should be in medicine, not as preparation for a professional career, but as a discipline which should be understood by all educated men. The faculty at this institution has …

The Role Of The Physician In Family Planning, Howard C. Taylor Jr. Jan 1967

The Role Of The Physician In Family Planning, Howard C. Taylor Jr.

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, one can find many reasons for believing that family planning programs should in general be associated with maternity services and that educational efforts should be concentrated during the weeks of pregnancy and the puerperium. During these periods the women of an age and fertility most in need of family planning are easily detectable. They are for obvious reasons interested in the subject and the most susceptible to advice. The staff needed for this work is already partly available among the physicians, nurses, midwives, and social workers connected with maternity services. The system promises to introduce birth control in …

Surgical Treatment Or Irradiation Of Cervical Carcinoma, Werner Bickenbach Jan 1967

Surgical Treatment Or Irradiation Of Cervical Carcinoma, Werner Bickenbach

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

All in all, the various methods, surgical with or without lymphadenectomy and irradiation, including supervolt therapy, permit marked individualization according to the age of the patient, her general condition, her operability, and according to the histological findings. It may be said for all methods that the best results are still obtained in the early stages of carcinoma. By surgery as well as irradiation, 90% or more permanent cures may be achieved. This, in view of the nature of cancerous disease, is an important fact.

Diagnostic Ultrasonography, Joseph H. Holmes Jan 1967

Diagnostic Ultrasonography, Joseph H. Holmes

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

It was the development of radar and sonar during the last World War which made the ultrasonic techniques I am going to talk about possible. Following the War, Dr. K. T. Dussik had the idea that, if one directed ultrasonic waves into the body, one might obtain echoes reflected from tissue surfaces in the same way that the Navy received echo information reflected from the submarine's hull. When he did this, he did get reflected echoes from within the body, and this opened the door for other investigators to demonstrate how this echo information could be made useful in diagnostic …

Continuing Education For What?, George E. Miller Jan 1967

Continuing Education For What?, George E. Miller

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Continuing education should mean continuing self-education, not continuing instruction. If this desirable goal is to be accomplished, there must be movement away from the content model, which encourages dependence upon teachers, to a process model, which demands a significant measure of self-reliance--a shift away from preoccupation with courses and methods, toward an augmented concern for educational diagnosis and individualized therapy. It does not mean an immediate abandonment of present program forms, but it is likely to be accompanied by a slow erosion of the faith which presently supports them.

A Synthesis Of A Homologous Series Of Aryl Mono- And Diboronic Acids, Larry Milton Allen Jan 1967

A Synthesis Of A Homologous Series Of Aryl Mono- And Diboronic Acids, Larry Milton Allen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Many attempts have been made to prepare aryl boronic acids and their esters which show a preferential affinity for tumor tissues for use in radiation therapy of neoplatic disorders (1,2). The data of Soloway, as extended and refined by Hansch and his coworkers, successfully correlates the low lipid solubility and electron releasing substituents of phyenl boronic acid derivatives with increased tumor concentration (3,4,5). However, most of these organoboron compounds do not produce a sufficiently high tumor-to-normal tissue boron concentration ratio for practical use in human cancer chemotherapy by the neutron capture technique. The knowledge that several chemical substances are preferentially …
