Postmenopausal Osteoporosis: The Evolution Of Our Concepts Of Its Cause, Harold M. Frost

Research findings in the last 20 years concerning senile and postmenopausal osteoporosis indicate that the skeletal condition associated with these diseases arises because some systemic factor acts directly upon the bone marrow tissues. There is a secondary tendency to accelerate loss of bone greater than in the normal aging process. The loss occurs only on those surfaces in physical contact with the bone marrow tissue.

Oral Lichen Planus : A Clinical Study Of The Association With Diabetes Mellitus And Vascular Hypertension, Gordon M. Rick

This investigation concerns the relationship of diabetes mellitus and vascular hypertension to oral lichen planus. Questionnaires were sent to 470 patients with oral lichen planus: 286 responded. Of these patients 103 were examined clinically, and 74 with current lesions were divided into ''keratotic'' and ''erosive'' categories. These patients underwent three-hour oral glucose tolerance tests; also, their asterial blood pressure was determined. In the survey group, diabetes was reported about three times more frequently by those with "erosive"; oral lichen planus than by those ''keratoic" lesions. The main purpose of this investigation was to test the endodontic sealing abilities of silver cones, N2, warm gutta percha, chemically softened gutta percha, laterally condensed gutta percha and Cavit under carefully controlled conditions. Evaluations were done by radiographic, macroscopic, microscopic, and autoradiographic examinations.

The four points which must be considered when evaluating the efficacy of sealing root canal systems, in vivo, were presented and discussed.

Cavit as a total endodontic filling material was presented, investigated and discussed.

An improvement of the chloro-rosin - gutta percha diffusion technique was presented.

Selected Factors Related To Ability To Regain Bladder Function Following Indwelling Catheterization, Jongkolnee Padmasiri

This exploratory retrospective study was designed to evaluate selected factors, including the ability to regain bladder function related to post indwelling urethral catheterization in an acute general hospital population.

The records of 107 patients who met the study criteria became the study population. These patients had three-way urethral catheters, continuous antibacterial irrigation and closed drainage system. Twenty patients died (19 percent) before the catheter was removed. Of the 87 patients who were alive, 37 percent (32 patients) had in-adequate bladder function. Of these 32 patients, no attempt was made to remove the catheter from 15 prior to their hospital discharge. …

A Clinical Evaluation Of The Light Progressive Technique During Cuspid And Anterior Retraction, Gary R. Keszler

This study was conducted to clinically evaluate cuspid and anterior retraction in first bicuspid extraction cases using the Light Progressive Technique. More specifically interest was centered on rate of cuspid and anterior retraction, anchorage preservation or control, difficulty of appliance adjustments, time involved in adjustments, frequency of adjustments, total retraction time, patient discomfort, root resorption, as well as a complete cephalometric appraisal. Seven patients were treated for ten months. The appliance was activated at three week intervals, and progress recorded monthly.

Cytology Of Rectosigmoid Diseases Using The Replica Method, Victor Lawoyin, Klaus Anselm

The cytology of rectal imprints of 105 control subjects and 79 patients with various rectosigmoid diseases has been studied. Our modified slide applicator was employed and found to be efficient, safe and easy to use. The cytological method has been more accurate than evaluation of the macroscopic appearance of the rectal mucosa only and therefore more efficient in the early diagnosis and follow-up of inflammatory bowel diseases. If used during routine proctosigmoidoscopy, it can help to determine the true incidence of proctocolitis in the population at large.

Gout and pseudogout, two metabolically different diseases, occur rarely in the same individual. A patient is reported who featured calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate and monosodium urate cryslals simultaneously in the synovial fiuid exudate which was removed during an acute arthritic attack of the left knee. The patient represents the seventh such case reported in the literature. The pathogenetic differences of gout and pseudogout are reviewed as they relate to the role of the crystal.

Comparative Gastroscopic Study Of Choline Salicylate And Aspirin, S. C. Danao, B. M. Schuman

Choline salicylate is the anhydrous choline salt of salicylic acid. It possesses the therapeutic effects of aspirin. Clinical trials suggest that it is less irritating to the gastric mucosa. A double-blind gastroscopic study of the acute effects on the gastric mucosa of choline salicylate, aspirin and matching placebo was carried out. Using the fiberoptic gastroscope. the stomach was examined and photographed before, and ten minutes after, the patient had swallowed the tablets. Results were evaluated on the basis of combined endoscopic and photographic observations. This study suggests that choline salicylate in its tablet form causes less gastric mucosal injury than …

Cecal diverticula, although rare, may result in acute or chronic diverticulitis. Rarely does acute hemorrhage arise from cecal diverticula. The diagnosis of acute diverticulitis usually is evident at operation and an appropriate resection is usually feasible, although the local status and general condition of the patient modifies treatment in some instances. Chronic cecal diverticulitis is usually difficult to distinguish from carcinoma and a resection is justified.

Four of 13 patients with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism had associated congenital anomalies of branchial origin. Three had characteristic hypernasal speech. One of these patients exhibited a cleft palate and the other two had functional and anatomic anomalies of the velo-pharyngeal musculature which explained the speech disturbance. The fourth patient represents the twenty-second recorded case of the III and IV pharyngeal pouch (DiGeorge's) syndrome, manifested by absent parathyroids and thymus glands associated with unusual facial features and cardiovascular anomalies. A Comparative Study Of The Emotional Adjustment Of Dysphasia, Shirley J. Watson

All Master's Theses

To study emotional problems of dysphasia and the resultant effect on rate and extent of language recovery, two subjects (one male and one female) were interviewed. Interviews and data were also obtained from therapists and hospital records. The results showed that emotionality and some personality factors adversely affected language recovery. This would suggest the importance of alleviating stress immediately following the lesion, during the therapy period, and throughout the home situation.

Immunologic studies show that man develops specific antibodies to a variety of serum proteins of bovine, sheep, goat, chicken, and rabbit origins as well as antibodies against cow's milk protein. The data in this report emphasize that these hetero-antibodies are more frequently found in individuals with immunological problems and/or chromosomal aberrations. The clinical significance of human hetero-antibodies against these animal proteins deserves closer clinical observation for an understanding of these immunological problems.

Heterotopic transplantation of the dog heart to an abdominal location is a satisfactory experimental model for the study of immunosuppression. Rejection signs are readily detected by palpation and electrocardiographic monitoring.
