A Rapid Flexible Method For Determining Bile Lipids, William T. Beher, Grace J. Lin, Sofia Stradnieks

A rapid flexible method has been developed for the quantitative determination of bile lipids In gallbladder and hepatic bile and duodenal aspirates. Quantification of bile salts involves separation of bile salt conjugates from one another and other bile lipids by thin layer chromatography. The separated salts are determined using 3-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and gas liquid chromatography. Cholesterol is determined in petroleum ether extracts of saponified bile by application of the Lieberman-Burchard reaction. Phospholipid phosphorus is determined in purified bile lipid extracts by oxidation followed by application of Bartlett's modification of the Fiske- SubbaRow method.

Sexual Parameters In Doctor-Patient Relationship, Judith Adams Perry

A survey to determine the attitudes and practices of physicians regarding touching (erotically and nonerotically) their patients was conducted with 164 female physicians. The results were compared with a previous study (from the University of California, Los Angeles) of male physicians. As compared with the UCLA sample of male physicians, more female physicians believe in and engage in nonerotic touching; but fewer female physicians believe in and engage in erotic touching. None of the female physicians reported sexual intercourse with their patients as compared with 33 or 11% of the UCLA sample of male physicians.

The Effect Of Masking On The Acoustic Reflex Threshold, Nancy E. Aldrich

This study investigated the effect of masking noise on the threshold for stapedial reflex. It has been shown that masking which shifts the hearing threshold causes a loudness function typical of recruitment. It was hypothesized that the stapedial reflex threshold remains the same in a masked situation as in the unmasked situation . It was suggested that this demonstrates recruitment in that the presence of noise reduces the range between hearing thresholds and stapedial reflex thresholds.

The purpose of this research was to determine if the advancements of cephalometrics and the capacity of the computer to quantify skeletal relationships could help the orthodontist recognize those cases where arch length could be gained through buccal expansion with little risk of relapse. To determine the stability of orthodontic treatment changes, the mandibular arches of 72 patients were studied. The cases were treated by Drs. Synovial fluid from a case of pyarthrosis was cultured for fungi, mycobacteria, aerobes and anaerobes with negative results. A Cell Wall Deficient (CWD) form was isolated in numerous cultures which showed the physico-chemical reactions characteristic of wall deficient M. tuberculosis.

The development of fiberoptic instruments which permit direct visualization of the entire colonic lumen has made possible the safe removal of polyps from any part of the colon. The avoidance of transabdominal colotomy and polypectomy significantly decreases the mortality and morbidity as well as the duration of hospital stay. We wish to present our experience in performing the endoscopic removal of 128 colonic polyps larger than 0.5 cm in size in 103 patients, located from the cecum to the sigmoid colon and beyond the reach of the rigid sigmoidoscope. Of 135 patients with streptococcal (non-group D) endocarditis seen at the Henry Ford Hospital (1957-1973), 133 had isolates which were penicillin- sensitive (inhibited by ≤ 0.2 μg/ml of penicillin C). The remaining two causative organisms were inhibited by 0.8 μg/ml of penicillin G and both of the infected patients received antibiotics just prior to the onset of endocarditis. The first patient received oral penicillin C for rheumatic fever prophylaxis and the second high dose parenteral carbenicillin. Using high dose parenteral therapy with ampicillin and streptomycin, the first patient was cured while the other patient relapsed. The second patient responded to …

Effects have been studied of induction of aminonucleoside-nephrosis in the rat on kidney cortex lysosomal acid proteinase activity (pH 3.2) and on such activity in the cytosol from which the lysosomes were isolated. In parallel with the onset of the massive proteinuria of the disease process but not preceding this effect, activity in the cytosol fraction was significantly increased. Significantly increased activity in the lysosomal fraction, on the other hand, was not observed until the proteinuria was well-established. The physical principles for determining tissue lipid content In vivo by selective radiation attenuation have been studied and are compared to other methods of body composition analysis. Two penetrating photon beams, each monoenergetic but of differing energies, are simultaneously passed through the low Z components of tissue and the relative beam absorption measured. A mathematical function incorporating the unabsorbed and absorbed photon beam intensities is applied to determine experimentally the relative proportion of fat and lean in the tissue. The literature indicates that many diabetic patients do not adhere to their prescribed medical regimen and that there is a need to discover factors that stimulate compliant behavior. It has been proposed that the patient's decision to accept or reject treatment has many determinants. This study explored the effect of one such determinant, the locus of control (the source of the stimulus for a person's behavior).
