The Evolution Of Prenatal Care In The United States : The Formative Years, Cristina M. Thomsen
The Evolution Of Prenatal Care In The United States : The Formative Years, Cristina M. Thomsen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
In the early decades of the twentieth century prenatal care became an accepted part of routine obstetrical care. This thesis is a description of the evolution of the prenatal care idea in the United States during these years. Two approaches are used in this description. An internal approach to prenatal care notes the maturation of procedure and technique. An external approach notes the inpatient and outpatient suggestions for providing prenatal care, the suggestions for educating the public to value and expect prenatal care and the medical profession to provide such care, and the varied promoters of such care, with their …

Recurrent Klebsiella Meningitis Following Trans-Sphenoidal Hypophysectomy For Nelson's Syndrome: Chloramphenicol Resistance During Relapse, Tom Madhavan, Daria Kiani, Louis Saravolatz, Keith Burch, Raymond C. Mellinger
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Three episodes of meningitis due to Klebsiella pneumoniae occurred in a young man following cerebral surgery. The patient had the features of Nelson's syndrome, and a chromophobe adenoma was removed by trans-sphenoidal resection. Intravenous chloramphenicol was effective in producing a temporary clinical response during the first episode of meningitis, but the organism became resistant to chloramphenicol during the second episode. Combined parenteral and intralumbar administration of gentamicin resulted in temporary improvement only. Subsequently, the subcutaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) reservoir of Ommaya provided a safe, convenient way to administer prolonged intraventricular therapy which, combined with a definitive procedure to correct the …

Skin Lesions Associated With E. Coli Sepsis In A Patient With Acute Leukemia, Robert A. Chapman, Ellis J. Van Slyck, Tom Madhavan
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
The clinical course of a patient with acute leukemia and metastatic intradermal abscesses secondary to Escherichia coli sepsis is described. E. coli organisms, cultured first from the blood and later from the lesions, had an identical antibiotic susceptibility and biotyping profile. This complication has not been previously described. Granulocytopenia and varicose veins may have been critical predisposing factors. With more widespread use of progressive immunosuppressive regimens, unusual manifestations of common infections will be recognized more frequently.

Detection Of Unique Tumor-Associated Proteins In The Urine Of Patients With Transitional Cell Carcinoma By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, Robert David Lehman
Detection Of Unique Tumor-Associated Proteins In The Urine Of Patients With Transitional Cell Carcinoma By High Resolution Two-Dimensional Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis, Robert David Lehman
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
A two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic technique was developed for the detection of unique tumor-associated proteins in urine of patients with transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder. This technique yielded high resolution of polypeptides in the urine of cancer patients. Urine was chosen as a source of tumor-associated components because the location of the tum or should release already solublized tum or substances in to the urine.
Urinary proteins were concentrated and then analyzed by the two - dimensional electrophoretic technique using isoelectric focusing in the first dimension and sodium dodecylsulfate - polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the second dimension. …
The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer
The Effect Of Escherichia Coli Endotoxin On The Cat Periapical Tissues, Thomas G. Dwyer
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The periapical tissue reaction to three concentrations of endotoxin solutions and to a sterile saline control solution was examined in six adult cats. The maxillary and mandibular cuspids were isolated and the pulps extirpated with barbed broaches. The four solutions (1, 10, 100 μg/ml endotoxin, and saline) were then injected into the four prepared teeth for each cat and the access cavities sealed with IRM.
At two week intervals, two cats were sacrificed and the specimens removed, while the remaining animals were retreated as previously described. The block tissue sections were radiographed, fixed in 10% buffered formalin, and prepared for …

In Vitro And Clinical Studies Of Cefaclor, A New Cephalosporin, Daria Kiani, Tom Madhavan, Keith Burch, Don Pohlod, Evelyn Fisher, Edward L. Quinn
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
In vitro susceptibility studies of 246 clinical isolates demonstrated that this antibiotic was effective against Group A beta hemolytic streptococci, alpha hemolytic streptococci, S. pneumoniae, both penicillinase producing and nonpenicillinase producing Staphylococci, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus mirabilis. Cephalothin susceptible E. coii were also susceptible to cefaclor. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia sp., Enterobacter Sp., and Streptococcus faecalis were uniformly resistant to cefaclor. The efficacy and safety of this antibiotic were studied in 27 patients with urinary tract, soft tissue, and respiratory infections. Patients with urinary tract infections became abacteriuric after 48 hours. Patients with soft tissue infections responded well within the first …
