Transforming Growth Factor-Beta Stimulation Of Lung Fibroblast Prostaglandin E2 Production., Arturo Diaz, John Varga, Sergio A. Jimenez
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF beta) stimulated the production of total protein, collagen, and fibronectin by normal human lung fibroblasts. The stimulatory response was maximal at 100 pM TGF beta and reversed toward control at higher concentrations. Inhibition of fibroblast prostaglandin (PG) synthesis enhanced TGF beta-induced stimulation of total protein, collagen, and fibronectin production and reversed the negative slope of the dose-response curve at high concentrations of TGF beta. Determination of the steady-state levels of Types I and III procollagens and fibronectin mRNAs employing specific cDNA probes demonstrated that inhibition of fibroblast PG production increased the stimulatory effect of TGF beta …

Identification And Ranking Of Stressors In Nuclear Medicine Technology, Scott R. Sechrist
Identification And Ranking Of Stressors In Nuclear Medicine Technology, Scott R. Sechrist
Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to identify the most significant stressors in the field of nuclear medicine technology. A sample of convenience of 25 nuclear medicine technologists was used to generate a list of 35 stressors specific to the occupation. Sixty-three randomly selected nuclear medicine technologists responded to a mailed questionnaire which asked the technologist to assess the relative stressfulness of each of the 35 items on a scale of "0 to 1000". Data from the 59 valid responses indicated that equipment malfunctions, add on exams, uncooperative physicians, lack of staff, and uncooperative patients were the most significant stressors …

Early Detection Of Hereditary Medullary Thyroid Cancer With Polymorphic Dna Probes, Steven A. Narod, Hagay Sobol, Isabelle Schuffenecker, R. Alan B. Ezekowitz, Gilbert M. Lenoir
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
We have performed linkage analysis on 32 families with hereditary medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) wilh seven polymorphic DNA probes situated near the centromere of chromosome 10. Nineteen of these families were affected with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A), and the remainder had MTC without pheochromocytoma. There were no instances of recombination between the MEN 2 A susceptibility gene and the IRBP.H4 marker. Two other probes, TBM.34 and MCK2, are also tightly linked(θ = 0.00 and θ = 0.02. respectively). Because TBM.34 and IRBP.H4/MCK2 are situated on opposite sides of the MEN 2A gene, screening with flanking DNA markers …
Genetic Mechanisms Of Neoplasia In Men 2, Charles E. Jackson, Robert A. Norum
Genetic Mechanisms Of Neoplasia In Men 2, Charles E. Jackson, Robert A. Norum
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal
Several possible mechanisms for the initiation and progression of tumors in multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2) merit consideration. Localization of MEN2A to the pericentromeric area of chromosome 10 indicates the site of the initial mutagenic event but does not explain the tissue specificity observed. The consistency of tissue involvement within families, despite the variability between families, suggests that the tumors result from separate but contiguous tissue-specific genes arranged in a particular linear order. Linkage studies in MEN 2A and 2B families are compatible with this contiguous gene theory. Data suggest that Knudson's two-mutational-event theory is applicable in MEN2, …

The experiences of medical students, residents, and faculty with a computerized literature searching system were evaluated. Third-year medical students, internal medicine and family practice residents, and full-time and voluntary faculty at one medical school had the opportunity to use a full-text and bibliographic medical literature retrieval system free of charge for an eleven-month period. Subjects conducted nearly nine thousand literature searches over a period of 942 system hours. Questionnaire data showed that participants could learn to use and would use an electronic information system, felt capable of using the system, utilized the system for a variety of purposes and in …

Animal Bite Infections., Joel D. Klein, Md
Animal Bite Infections., Joel D. Klein, Md
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Animal bites have become alarmingly common and may represent a quiet epidemic. It is estimated that between 1 and 3.5 million animal bites occur annually in the United States. The highest incidence has consistently been in 5-to-14-year-old schoolchildren, who have greater contact with animals, especially house pets, on a daily basis. This article discusses the epidemiology, microbiology, clinical findings and management of animal bites infections.

Physical Linkage Of The Genes For Platelet Membrane Glycoproteins Iib And Iiia., Paul F. Bray, Greg Barsh, Jean-Philippe Rosa, Xue Ya Luo, Ellen Magenis, Marc A. Shuman
Cardeza Foundation for Hematologic Research
The fibrinogen receptor on human platelets is a prototypic member of the integrin family and is composed of subunit glycoproteins IIb (gpIIb) and IIIa (gpIIIa) in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. We have isolated cDNA clones for gpIIb and gpIIIa and localized both genes to chromosome 17. In the current study, several approaches were used to localize and map the genes for gpIIb and gpIIIa. A preliminary evaluation of subchromosomal localization was performed by using a panel of mouse-human somatic cell hybrids that contain different amounts of the long arm of human chromosome 17. Southern hybridization to the DNA of these …

A [6-14c] Glucose Autoradiographic Study Of The Rat Brainstem Under Hypercapnic And Hypocapnic Conditions: Identification Of Respiratory-Related Regions, Tobey M. Leung
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The effects of systemic hypercapnia on brainstem metabolism were studied with the [6-14C] glucose autoradiography method. Neuronal pools which are metabolically active take up more [6-14C] glucose and maybe revealed pictorially as darker areas on autoradiograms. Since a high concentration of carbon dioxide stimulates central chemoreceptors and hence enhances respiratory drive, the darker regions on the autoradiograms may represent regions concentrated with respiratory-related neurons. Two discrete regions in the ventrolateral medulla (a column near nucleus ambiguus and a column in the lateral reticular nucleus) appeared dark and were analyzed with an image processing system, which converted …

The Development And Application Of A Multiple Regression Equation That Predicts The Sum Of Triceps And Subscapular Skinfolds In Children Ages 10-18, Pamela Luna-Raffy
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to develop a tool to predict the sum of triceps and subscapular skinfolds in children ages 10-18. In addition, school-based weight management programs were reviewed.
Skinfold calipers are often used to assess body fat percentage, particularly in non-clinical settings, test sites recommended by researchers are the triceps and The subscapular skinfolds. Recently, however, educators have reported two concerns about using skinfold calipers in the schools: (1) Specialized training and equipment are required, and (2) individuals must remove their clothing from selected test sites.
For schools where the use of calipers present problems, it seemed …
Decreased Triiodothyronine Binding To The Hepatic Nuclear Thyroid Hormone Receptor In The Diabetic Mouse, Thomas J. Dewind
Decreased Triiodothyronine Binding To The Hepatic Nuclear Thyroid Hormone Receptor In The Diabetic Mouse, Thomas J. Dewind
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The diabetic C57BL/KsJ-db m mouse has abnormal thyroid hormone levels and indications of thyroid hormone resistance. To investigate the basis of these abnormalities, the hepatic nuclear thyroid hormone receptor was extracted with 0.4 M KCl, 1.1 mM MgCl2, 20 mM Tris/HCl, pH 7.9 from hepatocyte nuclei of normal C57BL/KsJ, heterozygous C57BL/KsJ-db m (db/m), and diabetic C57BL/KsJ-db m (db/db) mice. Normal and heterozygous mice were grouped together as the controls. Triiodothyronine (T3) binding studies at 4°C using nitrocellulose filtration to separate free T3 from receptor bound T3 demonstrated an …
