Atherosclerosis is the commonest cause of death in Australia. Cardiovascular (CV) risk calculators have an important role in preventative cardiology, although they are are strongly age-dependent and designed to identify individuals at high risk of an imminent event. The imprecision around “intermediate” or “low” risk generates therapeutic uncertainty, and a significant proportion of patients presenting with myocardial infarction come from these groups, often with no warning. This highlights a conundrum: “Low” risk does not mean “no” risk.
A fresh approach may be required to address the clinical conundrum around CV preventative approaches in non-high-risk individuals. While probabilistic calculators do not …
Behavioural Phenotyping Of Thunder Mice With A Hypomorphic Mutation Of Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonuclear Protein L-Like (Hnrnpll) And Reduced T Cell Function, Maarten Van Den Buuse, Paul Halley, Gerard Hoyne
Behavioural Phenotyping Of Thunder Mice With A Hypomorphic Mutation Of Heterogeneous Nuclear Ribonuclear Protein L-Like (Hnrnpll) And Reduced T Cell Function, Maarten Van Den Buuse, Paul Halley, Gerard Hoyne
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonuclear protein l-like (hnRNPLL) is an RNA binding protein that regulates alternative splicing of mRNA and is abundantly expressed in memory T lymphocytes of the immune system and in the brain. A hypomorphic allele of the gene encoding hnRNPLL (Hnrpllthunder) selectively reduces T cell accumulation in lymphoid tissues, but little is known about its effects in the brain. Therefore, we exposed Hnrpllthunder mice to a test battery with relevance for a range of psychiatric illnesses. Thunder mice showed enhanced immobility in the tail-suspension test for depression-related behaviours, impaired short-term spatial memory in the Y-maze and reduced …

This study investigated whether the concentrations of four metals [lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), and aluminum (Al)] are correlated in cord blood and childhood blood samples from Jamaican children. Cord blood samples were obtained from 21 pregnant women enrolled in the second Jamaican Birth Cohort Study from July 1, 2011 to September 30, 2011, and blood samples were drawn from their children who participated in a follow up study when the children were 4–8 years old. Correlations were assessed by the Pearson or the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. The mean ages of children at the childhood visit and their …

Diabetes-associated complications, such as retinopathy, nephropathy, cardiomyopathy, and atherosclerosis, the main consequences of long-term hyperglycemia, often lead to organ dysfunction, disability, and increased mortality. A common denominator of these complications is the myofibroblast-driven excessive deposition of extracellular matrix proteins. Although fibroblast appears to be the primary source of myofibroblasts, other cells, including endothelial cells, can generate myofibroblasts through a process known as endothelial to mesenchymal transition (EndMT). During EndMT, endothelial cells lose their typical phenotype to acquire mesenchymal features, characterized by the development of invasive and migratory abilities as well as the expression of typical mesenchymal products such as α-smooth …

Background/aim: SARS-CoV-2 disease was announced as a pandemic by The World Health Organization in early 2020. It is still threatening the world population. Here, we aimed to produce hyperimmune sera that contain immunoglobulin G and F(ab')2 fragments sourced from horse antibodies as an urgent response to the pandemic. Materials and methods: SARS-CoV-2 was produced and inactivated with three different methods [formaldehyde (FA), formaldehyde, and binary ethylene amine (FA + BEI), and heat treatment]. After in vitro inactivation control, immunogens were mixed with Freund's adjuvant, thereafter horses (n: 2 for FA, 4 for FA + BEI, 2 for heat inactivation) and …

Background/aim: Physical frailty is thought to be related with a decline in cognitive function, mood, and social activities, especially in patients with depression and dementia. It is not clear whether or not physical frailty is associated with an impairment in cognitive function and mood in patients without dementia and depression. In this study, we evaluated the association of physical frailty with cognitive function and mood in geriatric patients without dementia and depression. Material and methods: In this study, 612 patients aged 65 years and over were evaluated. Physical frailty was assessed by using Fried criteria. Furthermore, comprehensive geriatric assessment was …

Background/aim: Chitotriosidase (ChT) is an enzyme secreted by activated macrophages and neutrophils in response to proinflammatory signals. There is growing evidence indicating that ChT activity reflects the systemic inflammatory status. This study aimed to investigate whether serum ChT activity increased in patients with psoriasis and related comorbidities. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study included 53 (28 with associated comorbidities and 25 without comorbidities) patients with psoriasis and 52 healthy volunteers. All participants underwent laboratory investigations for serum ChT levels, complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and serum lipid levels. Results: The patients with psoriasis showed significantly higher levels …

Non-Adherence To Colchicine Treatment Is A Common Misevaluation In Familialmediterranean Fever, Emre Tekgöz, Seda Çolak, Fatma İlknur Çinar, Sedat Yilmaz, Muhammet Çinar
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is a hereditary autoinflammatory disease that requires lifelong colchicine treatment. Colchicine is the mainstay of the treatment, which decreases the frequency and the severity of recurrent FMF attacks and prevents the development of amyloidosis. This study aimed to investigate the rates of colchicine treatment adherence in patients with FMF and the factors related to treatment non-adherence. Materials and methods: This observational study was conducted with 179 patients with FMF between November 2018 and April 2019 in a tertiary rheumatology outpatient clinic. The sociodemographic and clinical data were recorded. Compliance Questionnaire on Rheumatology (CQR) was used …

Background/aim: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) mainly encompass two entities called ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), both of which are chronic, progressive and, inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. Various indicators and noninvasive markers have been sought and used in IBD patients to help assessing disease activity and treatment effectiveness although none of them are proven to yield definite results in full correlation with the clinical, endoscopic, and histopathological examinations. The aim of the current study was to investigate the relationship of serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) levels with disease type and …

The Role Of Circadian Rhythm In The Regulation Of Cellular Protein Profiles In The Brain, Mustafa Caglar Beker, Ertuğrul Kiliç
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Circadian rhythm plays a significant role in the regulation of almost all kinds of physiological processes. In addition, it may also have a direct or indirect effect on the neurodegenerative processes, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and ischemic stroke. Therefore, the identification of circadian rhythm-related proteins is crucial to be able to understand the molecular mechanism of the circadian rhythm and to define new therapeutic target for the treatment of degenerative disorders. Materials and methods: To identify the light and dark regulated proteins, 8-12 weeks, male Balb/C mice were used at two different time points (morning (Zeitgeber time-0 (ZT0)) …
