Sharn, Raissa Sorgho, Suela Sulo, Emilio Molina-Molina, Clara Rojas Montenegro, Mary Jean Villa-Real Guno, Susan Abdel-Rahman

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications

Objective

Historically, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) has been instrumental to identifying malnutrition in children under 5 years living in resource restricted settings. Less attention is directed to at-risk, school-aged youth. Updated and validated pediatric age- and gender-specific MUAC growth curves expand malnutrition screening opportunities (2 months-18 years) including overweight/obesity. An innovative partnership was created to integrate MUAC z-score measurement trainings and screenings in the Real Madrid Foundation's (RMF) Social Sports Schools (S3) program, which provide sports and wellness programming to under-resourced communities. This work aimed to investigate the feasibility of leveraging non-healthcare professionals (non-HCPs) to identify malnutrition risk as part …

Colitis is a chronic bowel disease characterized by damage to the lining of the large intestine, with its precise underlying causes remaining incompletely understood. In this study, we provide evidence that circular RNA circNlgn plays a pivotal role in promoting the development of colitis. Colitis patients produce significant higher levels of circNlgn. Transgenic mice expressing circNlgn exhibit heightened susceptibility to colitis development and progression, primarily attributed to the presence of the protein isoform Nlgn173 encoded by circNlgn. Nlgn173 undergoes translocation into cell nuclei, where it interacts with actin, impeding the binding of actin-related protein 2 and 3 (Arp2/3) complex to …

Advancing School Nursing Practice: A Novel Approach To Screening For Gastrointestinal Disorders In Children, Ashley Bunting, Isabella Cavlan

Nursing | Senior Theses

Background: Currently, mandated health screenings in California schools are limited to vision, hearing, and scoliosis; this leaves several other body systems unmonitored during the crucial years of childhood development. One such system is the gastrointestinal (GI) system, which plays a vital role in the normal growth, nutrition status, development, and overall health of children. Objective: By developing and implementing a GI-specific screening tool in the outpatient school setting, this research aims to increase the detection of GI disorders in children. Not only that, but school nurses can use this novel screening tool to promote early diagnosis, intervention, and …

Depletion Of Oxalate In High-Oxalate Beverages By Positively Charged Particles, Sukrita Aungsuthan Jan 2024

Depletion Of Oxalate In High-Oxalate Beverages By Positively Charged Particles, Sukrita Aungsuthan

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Excessive dietary intake of oxalate is a key risk factor of calcium oxalate (CaOx) nephrolithiasis. Therefore, limiting daily oxalate intake is recommended to prevent CaOx stone formation. Black tea and coffee are commonly consumed beverages that are rich in oxalate, and avoidance of tea and coffee consumption is relatively hard. In this study, therefore, we aimed to develop a novel tool for depleting oxalate in black tea and coffee. Since oxalate is negatively charged, we hypothesized that positively charged particles would be an effective tool for capturing and removing oxalate. Hydroxyapatite (HA) and calcium alginate (Ca-Alg) beads were fabricated and …

Efficacy Of Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Equivalent-Guided Versus Transferrin Saturation-Guided Iron Supplement Protocol In Hemodialysis Patients: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial, Chalermchon Suttaluang Jan 2024

Efficacy Of Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Equivalent-Guided Versus Transferrin Saturation-Guided Iron Supplement Protocol In Hemodialysis Patients: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial, Chalermchon Suttaluang

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

BackgroundIron deficiency increases cardiovascular risk and all-cause mortality in hemodialysis patients. However, standard diagnostic tests, serum ferritin and transferrin saturation (TSAT), have limitations and are costly. Reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (RET-He) is a novel, less expensive marker for diagnosing iron deficiency. This study aimed to assess the non-inferiority of RET-He-guided intravenous (IV) iron supplementation compared with TSAT-guided supplementation in hemodialysis patients. MethodsA total of 138 hemodialysis patients were randomized into TSAT-guided (n = 68) and RET-He-guided (n = 70) groups. Both groups received intravenous iron according to a prespecified protocol. The primary outcome was the erythropoietin resistance index (ERI) at the …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Alopecia or hair loss in captive non-human primates (NHPs) such as cynomolgus macaques is a major concern of animal welfare in many primate facilities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between alopecic and healthy skin microbiome in cynomolgus macaques. This study included skin swab samples (head, arm, leg, ventral, and dorsal areas) collected from 33 healthy and 50 alopecic macaques housed at the NPRCT-CU. LEfSe analysis revealed the significant bacteria found in multiple areas of the alopecic group, including P. copri and L. animalis. The significant fungi found in double areas (arm-dorsal, dorsal-head, and leg-ventral) of …

Food Allergies, The Immune Response, And Preventative Treatments: Milk, Egg, And Shellfish Allergies, Marissa Dimatteo Jan 2024

Food Allergies, The Immune Response, And Preventative Treatments: Milk, Egg, And Shellfish Allergies, Marissa Dimatteo

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Food allergies have been an increasing concern worldwide with very little information on preventative measures and treatment. They can have long lasting and life-threatening consequences with a wide range of symptoms from hives to anaphylactic shock. Long recommended feeding guidelines, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and gastrointestinal alterations are thought to play a role in the increase in food allergies in infants. Early introduction of food, immunotherapy, and a properly supported gut microbiome have been recommended to decrease the likelihood of developing a food allergy and desensitizing the immune system.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: The brain is a major consumer of glucose as an energy source and regulates systemic glucose as well as energy balance. Although glucose transporters such as GLUT2 and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) are known to regulate glucose homeostasis and metabolism, the identity of a receptor that binds glucose to activate glucose signalling pathways in the brain is unknown. In this study, we aimed to discover a glucose receptor in the mouse hypothalamus.

METHODS: Here we used a high molecular mass glucose-biotin polymer to enrich glucose-bound mouse hypothalamic neurons through cell-based affinity chromatography. We then subjected the enriched neurons to …

Advancing School Nursing Practice: A Novel Approach To Screening For Gastrointestinal Disorders In Children, Ashley Bunting, Isabella Cavlan Jan 2024

Advancing School Nursing Practice: A Novel Approach To Screening For Gastrointestinal Disorders In Children, Ashley Bunting, Isabella Cavlan

Nursing | Student Research Posters

California schools currently only screen for vision and hearing, leaving many other health concerns unaddressed. Among these, gastrointestinal (GI) health is particularly significant, as digestive disorders can lead to severe consequences, like malnutrition and stunted growth. By incorporating routine GI screenings, school nurses can promote the early detection of disease, allowing for timely intervention and improved health outcomes in children.

Based on existing literature, we have developed a novel pediatric GI screening tool for school nurses to use in routine screenings, presented below.

The Effect Of Estrogen And A Mitochondrial Uncoupling Prodrug On Traumatic Brain Injury-Induced Dysfunction In Mice., Olivia J. Kalimon

Theses and Dissertations--Neuroscience

A large percent of both clinical and pre-clinical traumatic brain injury (TBI) studies report better outcomes females after severe injury compared to males. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a well-characterized driver of secondary injury and an attractive neurotherapeutic target; though, there is limited research available on mitochondrial dysfunction in females. However, a few studies have shown total mitochondria from the cortex of females appear protected from TBI-induced bioenergetic dysfunction. These results were replicated in these studies so further characterization was performed. Additionally, protein expression of some oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) complexes were elevated in the uninjured cortex of females relative to uninjured males, …
