The Journal of Genomes and Exomes is a new, peer-reviewed, open-access, online publication whose scope comprises reporting of high quality genome, exome, and gene panel sequences with attendant, detailed phenotypes. The intent of this journal is to facilitate comparisons between genome, exome and gene panel sequencing studies in order to assist significance testing of the genotypephenotype associations, particularly those in uncommon genetic diseases. While there is yet to be a consensus regarding these classifications, the definition of an empiric set is helpful in understanding error models. Herein we have suggested structured templates for submissions and the rationale for the data …

A de novo somatic mutation in the mammalian target of rapamycin (MTOR) has previously been described in one patient with hemimegalencephaly and epilepsy. Here, we present a case of a young girl with megalencephaly and intractable seizures who was found to have an MTOR mutation in multiple cell lineages (p.Cys1483Phe) and, therefore, presumed to be of germline origin. The mutation was detected in peripheral blood DNA by exome sequencing of the patient and her parents, substantiating the utility of this approach for detection of clinically relevant de novo variations.

To investigate serum levels of ghrelin in pregnant women as a potential early marker for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at Fatih University Hospital. Included in the study were 35 women with HG and 31 pregnant women without HG as a control group. The groups were compared in terms of age, gravidity, body mass index (BMI), and fasting serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and ghrelin levels. Results: Ghrelin levels of the patients with HG were found to be significantly lower than those in the control group (P = 0.03). No intergroup differences could be …

To define the independent variables that affect the life spans of patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Materials and methods: This study was conducted in the neurosurgery clinic of Erciyes University's Faculty of Medicine, lasting from February 2000 to September 2006. A total of 98 patients were diagnosed with GBM after tumor resections. Patients' demographic, neurological, radiological, surgical, and clinical features and adjunct therapies were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Of the 98 patients, 36 (36.7%) were female and 62 (65.4%) were male. There were 15 patients (15.3%) still alive. The median survival time (MST) of the gross total resection and subtotal resection …

To investigate whether there is any association between uroflowmetry parameters and blood levels of thyroid hormones in asymptomatic women. Materials and methods: Included in the study were 110 consecutive female patients with no urinary complaints who had thyroid function tests performed in an endocrinology clinic. Uroflowmetric measurements were performed for each patient in a sitting position. The patients were divided into 3 groups, hypo-, hyper-, and euthyroidism, and were investigated for statistical difference among them regarding maximum flow rate (Qmax), average flow rate (Qave), voided volume (VV), and voiding time (VT). Results: The mean Qmax and Qave values of hypo-, …

To investigate the serum level of leptin (OB) and its relationship with pro- and antiinflammatory cytokines/mediators in aggressive periodontitis (AP) patients. Materials and methods: The study population (n = 12) comprised 6 AP patients and 6 periodontally healthy subjects (HC). The fasting venous serum samples were used to determine the OB and the cytokines/mediators belonging to the Th1/Th2/Th17 cells. The correlations among the OB and cytokines/mediators in the serum and clinical periodontal parameters were also investigated. Results: The AP group presented significantly higher serum TGF-\beta1 and IL-2 concentrations (pg/mL) and lower IL-4, IL-5, IL-12, IL-13, and IL-17A concentrations than the …
