Haematological Changes In Malaria-Infected Children In North-West Nigeria, Momodu Imoru, Umar A. Shehu, Uchechukwu Gabriel Ihesiulor, Aminu Haruna Kwaru

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Malaria is prevalent in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world and has been associated with some haematological changes. This study determined the effect of malaria infection on haematological values amongst children in north-western Nigeria. Materials and methods: Fifty-eight malaria-infected children, aged 1–12 years, and 58 age-matched uninfected children were studied between September and December 2011 at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano. Blood samples collected were analysed for full blood count using a Swelab Alfa 3-part analyser and malaria parasite test using the field staining technique. Results: There were significantly lower values of haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration, and platelet count …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

To assess the ability of honey to reduce pain and promote epithelialization on posttonsillectomy wounds. Materials and methods: A prospective randomized control study was conducted on 60 patients undergoing tonsillectomy from November 2007 to September 2008 at University Malaya Medical Centre. The test group received honey application on the tonsillar bed and the control group had placebo applied. The pain relief was analyzed along with the amount of analgesia consumed, and wound epithelialization was monitored and recorded accordingly. Results: Twenty-one patients from each group were finally analyzed after excluding patients that did not complete the study or fit the criteria. …

The Effects Of Temporal Preparation On Reaction Time, Glen Robert Forester Jan 2013

The Effects Of Temporal Preparation On Reaction Time, Glen Robert Forester

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

When responding to external stimuli, preparation reduces Reaction Time (RT). One form of preparation known as temporal preparation results from advance knowledge about when a stimulus will appear. We used Event Related Potentials to investigate how increasing temporal preparation decreases RT during a speeded, choice RT task by manipulating temporal preparation within subjects. In order to determine which cognitive processes are speeded, the latencies of the Lateralized Readiness Potential (LRP) and P300 were examined across two levels of temporal preparation. In line with previous research the stimulus locked LRP, but not the response locked LRP, was speeded when temporal preparation …

Proteolytic Processing Of The Amyloid Precursor Protein During Apoptosis And Cell Cycle: Implications For Alzheimer's Disease, Tina N. Fiorelli Jan 2013

Proteolytic Processing Of The Amyloid Precursor Protein During Apoptosis And Cell Cycle: Implications For Alzheimer's Disease, Tina N. Fiorelli

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the presence of amyloid plaques, made up primarily of Aϐ peptides, and neurofibrillary tangles, containing hyperphosphorylated tau. Aϐ is generated by sequential proteolysis of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) by beta and gamma secretases. The leading hypothesis of Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis is the amyloid cascade hypothesis, which suggests that amyloid is central to the disease process. However, tau pathology correlates more closely with cognitive dysfunction and follows a predictable anatomical course through the brain. We hypothesize that if Aϐ is upstream of tau pathology and tau pathology follows this predictable course through the brain, Aϐ …

Abstract

INTRODUCTION:

Optimal risk factor control is integral to managing patients with proven coronary heart disease (CHD+) and for those at risk of coronary heart disease (CHD-). The primary aim of the study was to assess the success rate of reaching lipid risk factor targets in a multiple risk factor clinic.

METHODS:

A retrospective audit was conducted in 488 patients (CHD+, n = 112; CHD-, n = 376) who attended the Cardiovascular Risk Factor Clinic at Tallaght Hospital, Dublin in 2009 and 2010.

RESULTS:

Risk factor targets achieved in CHD+ and CHD- patients were LDLc (54/62 %), HDLc (67/67 %), …

Scfslimb Ubiquitin Ligase Suppresses Condensin Ii–Mediated Nuclear Reorganization By Degrading Cap-H2, Daniel W. Buster, Scott G. Daniel, Huy Q. Nguyen, Sarah L. Windler, Lara C. Skwarek, Maureen Peterson Jan 2013

Scfslimb Ubiquitin Ligase Suppresses Condensin Ii–Mediated Nuclear Reorganization By Degrading Cap-H2, Daniel W. Buster, Scott G. Daniel, Huy Q. Nguyen, Sarah L. Windler, Lara C. Skwarek, Maureen Peterson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Condensin complexes play vital roles in chromosome condensation during mitosis and meiosis. Condensin II uniquely localizes to chromatin throughout the cell cycle and, in addition to its mitotic duties, modulates chromosome organization and gene expression during interphase. Mitotic condensin activity is regulated by phosphorylation, but mechanisms that regulate condensin II during interphase are unclear. Here, we report that condensin II is inactivated when its subunit Cap-H2 is targeted for degradation by the SCF(Slimb) ubiquitin ligase complex and that disruption of this process dramatically changed interphase chromatin organization. Inhibition of SCF(Slimb) function reorganized interphase chromosomes into dense, compact domains and disrupted …

Electroporation-Mediated Gene Transfer Directly To The Swine Heart, Barbara Hargrave, Harre Downey, Cathryn Lundberg, Annelise Israel, Yeong-Jer Chen, Richard Heller Jan 2013

Electroporation-Mediated Gene Transfer Directly To The Swine Heart, Barbara Hargrave, Harre Downey, Cathryn Lundberg, Annelise Israel, Yeong-Jer Chen, Richard Heller

Bioelectrics Publications

In vivo gene transfer to the ischemic heart via electroporation holds promise as a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of heart disease. In the current study, we investigated the use of in vivo electroporation for gene transfer using three different penetrating electrodes and one non-penetrating electrode. The hearts of adult male swine were exposed through a sternotomy. Eight electric pulses synchronized to the rising phase of the R wave of the electrocardiogram were administered at varying pulse widths and field strengths following an injection of either a plasmid encoding luciferase or one encoding green fluorescent protein. Four sites on …

Different Mechanisms Of Inflammation Induced In Virus And Autoimmune-Mediated Models Of Multiple Sclerosis In C57bl6 Mice., Abhinoy Kishore, Anurag Kanaujia, Soma Nag, A M Rostami, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Kenneth S Shindler, Jayasri Das Sarma Jan 2013

Different Mechanisms Of Inflammation Induced In Virus And Autoimmune-Mediated Models Of Multiple Sclerosis In C57bl6 Mice., Abhinoy Kishore, Anurag Kanaujia, Soma Nag, A M Rostami, Lawrence C. Kenyon, Kenneth S Shindler, Jayasri Das Sarma

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the human central nervous system (CNS). Neurotropic demyelinating strain of MHV (MHV-A59 or its isogenic recombinant strain RSA59) induces MS-like disease in mice mediated by microglia, along with a small population of T cells. The mechanism of demyelination is at least in part due to microglia-mediated myelin stripping, with some direct axonal injury. Immunization with myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) induces experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a mainly CD4(+) T-cell-mediated disease, although CD8(+) T cells may play a significant role in demyelination. It is possible that both autoimmune and nonimmune mechanisms such as …
