The main objective of this project is to develop a sharp curvature cutting algorithm and integrate into a CO2 Laser Cutting (2D CAD/CAM) program. The existing 8-tube FAF CW CO2 laser system developed· at the University of Malaya together with an existing XY control table is utilized to study the cutting of sharp curvature profiles. A CO2 laser cutting program with user-friendly graphical user interface is developed using Visual Basic 6 and MINT programming language via MINT Interface Library to drive the controller card and hence the motor. This paper addresses aerodynamic modeling issues related to a simple experiment in which a pingpong ball is dropped from rest onto a table surface. From the times between the ball-table impacts, the initial drop height and the coefficient of restitution can be determined using a model that neglects aerodynamic drag. The experiment prompts questions about modeling the dynamics of a simple impact problem, including the importance of accounting for aerodynamic effects. Two nonlinear aerodynamic models are discussed in the context of experimental results.

Strain prediction at various locations on a smart composite wing can provide useful information on its aerodynamic condition. The smart wing consisted of a glass/epoxy composite beam with three extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (EFPI) sensors mounted at three different locations near the wing root. Strain acting on the three sensors at different air speeds and angles-of-attack were experimentally obtained in a closed circuit wind tunnel under normal conditions of operation. A function mapping the angle of attack and air speed to the strains on the three sensors was simulated using feedforward neural networks trained using a backpropagation training algorithm. Parallel machine tools (i.e., machine tools capable of cutting a part with multiple tools simultaneously but independently) are being utilized more and more to increase operation productivity, decrease setups, and reduce floor space. Process control is the utilization of real-time process sensor information to automatically adjust process parameters (e.g., feed, spindle speed) to increase operation productivity and quality. Laminated glass consisting of two soda lime glass plies adhered by a polyvinyl butyral interlayer (PVB) is used for automotive glazing. This paper describes the application of a dynamic, nonlinear finite element method to investigate the failure modes of a laminated glass subjected to low-velocity impact with a spherical head form. Crack type, crack location and crack initiation time are evaluated using the maximum principal stress and J-integral criterion. In this study, heat transfer coefficient and film effectiveness distributions are investigated for a film cooling hole configuration that has inclined holes discharging into a tangential slot before interactions with the mainstream. The cylindrical holes are inclined 35° along the mainstream direction. The effect of coolant-to-mainstream blowing ratio is examined for M=0.5 and M=1.0. Different slot width to hole ratios and also the effect of hole exit condition (square edge and triangular edge) is considered. Spatio-temporal variation in action intervals during ventricular fibrillation (VF) suggestthat the excitable gap may also be distributed spatio-temporally. The observation leadus to hypothesize that distributed pacing can be used to modify and entrain electricalactivation during VF. We tested this hypothesis using simulated VF and animal studies.

We simulated VF in a 400 by 400 cell matrix. Simulation results showed that activationpattern could be entrained using spatially distributed stimulation. Up to a certain limit,increasing stimulus strength and density led to improved entrainment. Best entrainmentwas obtained by pacing at a cycle length similar to the intrinsic cycle length.

Numerical calculations of the aqueous humor dynamics in the anterior chamber of both the rabbit and the human eye are presented to delineate the basic flow and transport mechanisms. The calculations are based on a geometrical model of the eye, which represents the Trabecular mesh (TM) as a multi-layered porous zone of specified pore sizes and void fraction. Buoyancy is observed to be the dominant driving mechanism for the convective motion in both orientations (horizontal and vertical) of the eye. Several UMR faculty have operated course-based learning centers (LCs) as part of the campus-wide Learning Enhancement Across Disciplines (LEAD) Program of student learning assistance and enhancement. LCs are designed to assist large numbers of students in a cost- and time-efficient manner that promotes student engagement without requiring undue amounts of faculty time.
