Adaptive Content Pacing And Media Playlist Resolution To Match Dynamic Time Constraints, Thiyagaraj Krishna Apr 2026

Adaptive Content Pacing And Media Playlist Resolution To Match Dynamic Time Constraints, Thiyagaraj Krishna

Defensive Publications Series

Digital media platforms can create fixed-duration playlists that may be misaligned with a user's variable, real-world time constraints, such as a commute, potentially resulting in abrupt content interruptions or periods of silence. This disclosure describes systems and methods for dynamically synchronizing media playback with a time-bound activity. A system can generate an initial media queue to approximate a time budget and can monitor for discrepancies between the remaining content duration and the activity's remaining time. Based on the magnitude of a detected discrepancy, the system can apply a tiered re-calibration mechanism. For example, such a mechanism may include restructuring the …

Towards Smaller Artificial Neural Network Using Mean Compression*, Michael D. Burks, Matthew K. Chuhng Apr 2026

Towards Smaller Artificial Neural Network Using Mean Compression*, Michael D. Burks, Matthew K. Chuhng

Campus Research Month

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) require substantial memory and computational resources, limiting their deployment on resource-constrained devices. Our contribution is a compression method using Mean Compression (MC) to reduce ANN size while preserving functionality and accuracy. MC consolidates connections with similar edge weights into meta-nodes with averaged values. Unlike traditional pruning that only removes connections among neurons, MC restructures networks by recomputing weights and creating meta-nodes. Additionally, unlike fixed pruning thresholds, MC uses flexible weight range patterns. Applied to multilayer perceptron (MLP), ANNs are made more accessible for deployment on constrained devices as proven in several experiments. Specifically, across five classification …

Energy Scaling And Frequency Ratios Of Particles And Constants, Alison Christina Menzmer, Donald Chakeres, Vola Andrianarijaona

Campus Research Month

We are exploring quantum aspects of various physical quantities (including Bohr radius, Rydberg constant, Planck time, and Hubble constant) and mass energies of elementary particles (including electron, neutron, and quarks). We express all physical units in an energy equivalence in Hertz, normalized to 1 Hz. Furthermore, the logarithms of these normalized energies are scaled by the logarithm of a chosen particle, which allows the generation of an Arrhenius plot exhibiting numerical structures. Our results presented in this poster show that the proton is a good candidate for an Arrhenius plot with partial fractions (1 + 1/n) and (1 - 1/n).

Tensegrity Across Biological Scales, V. M. Andrianarijaona Apr 2026

Tensegrity Across Biological Scales, V. M. Andrianarijaona

Campus Research Month

Over the past two decades, biology has undergone a profound conceptual shift. Living systems are no longer viewed strictly as biochemical networks; they are now understood as mechanically integrated, energy-dissipating, nonequilibrium systems governed by physical laws. Tensegrity—structural stability derived from a balance of pre-stressed tension and compression—provides the essential linking framework between molecular architecture and organismal function. This approach moves beyond "chemistry-only" models to explain how biological integrity and "mechanotransduction" (the conversion of physical force into biochemical signals) emerge from hierarchical, force-regulated networks.

Motion: A Bounded Nonlinear Phase Controller Formulated As A Port-Hamiltonian System On Compact Manifolds, Olexandr Lozovyi

Defensive Publications Series

This disclosure presents a novel nonlinear phase-based control architecture, termed MOTION, designed for energy-efficient actuation on compact manifolds $S^1$ and $T^N$. Unlike traditional PID controllers that rely on artificial clamping, MOTION utilizes a sinusoidal control law $u = -K \sin(\Delta\varphi)$ to achieve intrinsic effort bounding. The closed-loop system is formally derived as a dissipative port-Hamiltonian system, enabling rigorous verification of almost-global asymptotic stability (AGAS), input-to-state practical stability (ISpS), and incremental stability via contraction analysis. A key technical contribution is the FPU-free, 16-bit integer implementation optimized for embedded microcontrollers, demonstrating a 30.8% reduction in control effort ($\int U^2 dt$) compared to …

Generation Of Synthetic Data Via Embedding-Based Semantic Replacement From A Controlled Lexicon, Paramesh Manickavelu, Tomek Rutowski, Saeed Mirza, Paul Hsu, Stevan Malesevic

Defensive Publications Series

Evaluation of conversational artificial intelligence systems can depend on diverse datasets, but using raw user data may introduce privacy risks, and some anonymization techniques, such as redaction, can degrade data utility. A system for generating synthetic data can operate by transforming original text prompts. For example, a process can involve tokenizing a prompt, generating vector embeddings for the tokens, and performing a semantic search against a vector database. This database may contain embeddings for terms from a controlled, privacy-safe lexicon. Original tokens can be replaced with semantically similar counterparts from this lexicon to assemble a new, synthetic prompt. This technique …

Psychosocial Mediators Of A Physical Activity And Dietary Intervention In Pregnant Women With Overweight Or Obesity, Meghan Baruth, Sarah Wilcox, Jihong Liu, Rebecca Schlaff

Faculty Publications

Background

Mediation analyses provide insight into both ‘pieces’ of the mediation chain; they allow us to look into the ‘black box’ that is behavior change. They allow researchers to better understand the ‘how’ of an intervention’s effects and/or the ‘why’ behind why an intervention worked or did not work. The lack of publications in pregnant populations highlights the need for additional studies to be conducted and published. The purpose of this study is to examine the psychosocial mediators of physical activity and dietary outcomes in a sample of pregnant women with overweight or obesity participating in the Health in Pregnancy …

Bgc-Argo Float Reveals Shifts In Nitrogen-Carbon Cycling In An Oxygen-Deficient Zone, Mariana B. Bif, Colette Kelly, Mark A. Altabet, Annie Bourbonnais, Claire Elbon, Edgart Flores, Alanna Mnich, Josh Plant, Kenneth S. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Oxygen-deficient zones are hotspots of marine fixed nitrogen loss, but the temporal dynamics of their microbial processes remain poorly resolved. Here we present a nearly three-year high-resolution record from a Biogeochemical Argo float in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific that captures a decline in nitrite concentrations, reflecting a shift in nitrogen redox balance. Using a stoichiometric mass-balance model, we quantify nitrogen transformations, including dissimilatory nitrate reduction to nitrite, denitrification, anammox, and nitrite oxidation, and their coupling to carbonate chemistry. The model shows that dissimilatory nitrate reduction to nitrite dominates nitrogen transformations, while denitrification and anammox vary over depth, biogeochemical transition, …

Elucidating The Structure And Binding Nature Of Thianaphthene Dimers Using Gas-Phase Infrared Spectroscopy, Gaia Zucali, Vincent J. Esposito, Sandra Brünken, Piero Ferrari

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Crucial for many biological systems, in astrochemistry, and for fundamental chemistry in general, the conformations adopted by weakly bound complexes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been the focus of debate for decades. Still, there are great challenges in forming such complexes in the laboratory, measuring accurate spectroscopic information sensitive to structure, and computing molecular properties for systems subtly bound by dispersive interactions. Here, we employ a combination of gas-phase infrared spectroscopy with extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations to unambiguously determine the preferred conformation adopted by dimers of neutral thianaphthene, a PAH composed of one six- and one five-membered …

Describing The Wave Function Collapse Process With A State-Dependent Hamiltonian, Le Hu, Andrew N. Jordan Apr 2026

Describing The Wave Function Collapse Process With A State-Dependent Hamiltonian, Le Hu, Andrew N. Jordan

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Quantum mechanics admits two distinct evolutions: deterministic unitary dynamics governed by the Schrödinger equation and the probabilistic collapse of the wave function. We show that the continuous collapse of a quantum state under measurement can, on a trajectory-by-trajectory basis, be equivalently described as unitary evolution generated by a time- and state-dependent Hermitian Hamiltonian with stochastic parameters. While the ensemble dynamics remains non-unitary, each individual trajectory thus admits a unitary representation. We derive explicit forms of such Hamiltonians for projective measurements on arbitrary n-level systems and for continuous position measurements of a harmonic oscillator, and we propose experimental schemes to …

Monitoring Koyna Dam Displacements Using Persistent Scatterer Interferometry, Sara Zouriq, Gehan Hamdy, Amr Fawzy, Rejoice Thomas, Hesham El-Askary, Eehab Khalil, Mohamed Elsayad, Tarik El-Salawaky

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Monitoring dam stability is critical to ensure structural safety and operational reliability. This study integrates Persistent Scatterer Interferometry (PSI) based on Sentinel-1 SAR imagery (2020–2023) with Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations to assess the behavior of the Koyna Dam in India. PSI detected crest displacements between −1.0 and −1.8 mm yr−1, while FEM simulations predicted a maximum vertical displacement of approximately −3.2 mm at the crest. Although these results represent different quantities (time-averaged displacement rates versus peak static displacement), both approaches indicate millimeter-scale deformation and a consistent pattern of settlement at the dam crest, supporting the interpretation of hydrologically driven …

Publications and Research

Understanding the complicated processes that regulate star formation and cause a galaxy to become quiescent is key to our comprehension of galaxy evolution. We used eight well-resolved star-forming z < 0.3 galaxies from the UVCANDELS survey, where a total of 10 Hubble Space Telescope bands, including UV follow-up in UVIS/F275W, allow us to reconstruct the star formation histories (SFHs) of regions across each galaxy. This approach provides a powerful tool to explore the spatiotemporal connection between star formation and galaxy evolution. The spatial and temporal profiles of stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR) surface density were obtained from the SFHs of these regions. We measure scaling relations and projected radial profiles of regions within each galaxy at the time of observation and at 1 Gyr lookback time, noting possible trends in the evolution. By comparing the change in star formation over time, we can infer the timing and location of star formation and see early signs of star formation shutting off before quenching occurs. We compared the SFR density–stellar mass density scaling relations for individual galaxies as they evolve from 1 Gyr lookback time. The correlation lines pivot around a log-stellar mass surface density of 7.25 [M⊙ kpc−2], which may be evidence of a self-regulating process on these scales. Radial profiles of the galaxy logarithmic specific SFR (sSFR) show an overall decrease over 1 Gyr, but five galaxies show a greater change in log(sSFR) at the outskirts than the center, indicating a possible early onset of quenching in these galaxies.

Time And Actual Infinity In Aristotle's Physics, Atanas Georgiev Iliev Apr 2026

Time And Actual Infinity In Aristotle's Physics, Atanas Georgiev Iliev

Classics Undergraduate Senior Theses

This thesis examines the relationship between the existence of infinity and the nature of time as presented in Aristotle’s Physics, arguing that his two theories come into tension at two points. The Introduction sets out the purpose and methodology of the study and offers an overview of the historical reception and influence of Aristotle’s teaching on the infinite. Chapter I outlines this teaching, examining Aristotle’s reasons for categorising instances of the infinite through several dichotomies, most notably the distinction between actual and potential existence, before presenting his arguments for rejecting the existence of an actual infinity. Chapter II turns to …
