Methane Consumption Rates By Coastal Virginia Beach Microbes, James R. Bailey Ii Mar 2026

Methane Consumption Rates By Coastal Virginia Beach Microbes, James R. Bailey Ii

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

This study measures whether microbial communities in the shallow coastal waters of Virginia Beach are capable of consuming methane in the water column. Using methane enrichment incubations and gas chromatography, we found no measurable methane oxidation of our samples over multi-day periods. These results suggest that these coastal waters may act as net sources of atmospheric methane.

Trapping Ambrosia Beetles (Curculionidae) With Ethanol-Soaked Tree Bolts In Southeastern Virginia., Sajrim Chowdhury, Umme H. Akter, Deborah A. Waller

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

Native and invasive ambrosia beetles infest a wide variety of tree species in southeastern Virginia and cause significant damage. We investigated trapping ambrosia beetles by using ten different tree species as lures. One objective of the study was to determine the most effective lure for each species of ambrosia beetle related to tree species and the diameter of the bolt. Sections of tree limbs of two different diameters and 25cm in length were soaked in ethanol and hung from trees in several natural locations, both near water and away from water. Beetles attracted to the lures bored into the bolts …

This project aims to establish methods and protocols suitable for maintaining various marine invertebrates in a control laboratory setting. In the first stage of the project, the existing recirculation system and lab space will be reorganized and restructured to suit the …

The Influence Of Wind Speed On Phytoplankton Bloom Timing In Antarctica's 5 Regions, Majesti L. Cummings, Jessie S. Turners Mar 2026

The Influence Of Wind Speed On Phytoplankton Bloom Timing In Antarctica's 5 Regions, Majesti L. Cummings, Jessie S. Turners

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

Phytoplankton blooms form the foundation of the Antarctic marine food web and play a critical role in regional carbon cycling. Recent observations along the West Antarctic Peninsula indicate shifts in bloom phenology, the seasonal timing of biological events in nature, with accumulation seasons occurring later in recent decades. This study investigates how different variability in spring wind speed influences phytoplankton bloom start dates and peak dates across five ecological regions of the West Antarctic Peninsula.

Bloom timing is derived from 25 years of satellite-based chlorophyll-a observations, including annual start date and peak date. Wind speed data derived from atmospheric reanalysis …

Water Needs And Recovery Pathways For The Great Salt Lake, David Tarboton, Sarah Null, Bethany Neilson Mar 2026

Water Needs And Recovery Pathways For The Great Salt Lake, David Tarboton, Sarah Null, Bethany Neilson

Spring Runoff Conference

Main Points

  • Levels of GSL inherently fluctuate because of variability in precipitation and temperature that drive inflow and evaporation
  • Reductions in inflows due to water use are superimposed on this variability
  • Consistent delivery of conserved water offers the opportunity to shift the range of lake levels upwards reducing the occurrence of serious adverse effects and increasing the potential for healthy lake levels
  • Adding 250 thousand-acre ft/year reduces the occurrence of serious adverse effects from 61% to 28% over the long term
  • Adding 800 thousand-acre ft/year shifts the mean of variable lake levels to the lower end of the healthy lake …

Molecular Xenomonitoring For Early Detection Of West Nile Virus Circulation In New Jersey: A Field Validation Study, Viet-Linh Nguyen, Pratap Kafle Mar 2026

Molecular Xenomonitoring For Early Detection Of West Nile Virus Circulation In New Jersey: A Field Validation Study, Viet-Linh Nguyen, Pratap Kafle

Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellow Symposium

West Nile virus (WNV) remains a persistent public health concern in New Jersey, yet current pooled-mosquito PCR surveillance often detects viral activity only after significant amplification, narrowing the window for timely intervention. Molecular xenomonitoring (MX), which is the detection of viral RNA in mosquito excreta or saliva deposited on honey-baited FTA cards, offers a non-destructive alternative that preserves nucleic acids at room temperature, passively captures signals from hundreds of mosquitoes per card, and has the potential to detect WNV circulation earlier than conventional surveillance by continuously sampling mosquito activity without the need for lethal collection. This project aims to (1) …

Is Precision Agriculture Technology Adoption Persistently Overestimated?, Trey Malone, Chad Fiechter, Zanliang Meng, James Lowenberg‐Deboer, Bruce Erickson, Jay Akridge Mar 2026

Is Precision Agriculture Technology Adoption Persistently Overestimated?, Trey Malone, Chad Fiechter, Zanliang Meng, James Lowenberg‐Deboer, Bruce Erickson, Jay Akridge

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

Precision agriculture is sometimes assumed to diffuse steadily over time, and industry planning frequently extrapolates early adoption trends forward. This study evaluates the accuracy of such expectations by comparing agricultural input dealers' forecasts of future service offerings with the actual levels of offerings that dealerships eventually provided. Using 21 waves of the CropLife-Purdue Precision Agriculture Dealership Survey from 2000 to 2025, we examine expected and realized precision agriculture offerings across 26 technologies. We document systematic and persistent overestimation of adoption: for most technologies, expected diffusion exceeds realized outcomes, with forecast errors becoming especially pronounced as adoption flattened or declined in …

Broccoli Yield Following Varying Ratios Of Barley And Pea Cover Crop Mixtures, Jesen Hosch, Charlie Rohwer Mar 2026

Broccoli Yield Following Varying Ratios Of Barley And Pea Cover Crop Mixtures, Jesen Hosch, Charlie Rohwer

Midwest Vegetable Trial Reports

While cover crops can provide a variety of services to farmers, there is debate about the benefit of cover crop mixtures compared to monocultures. A barley monoculture, a pea monoculture, and varying ratios of a barley-pea cover crop mixture were planted in spring before broccoli and under-fertilized with nitrogen. Though both broccoli yield and head weight had a positive relationship with the percent peas in a mixture, a fallow control was similar to all treatments but the barley monoculture, which resulted in the lowest yield and head size.

The Evolution Of Self-Awareness In Conscious Organisms, Robert A. Dielenberg Mar 2026

The Evolution Of Self-Awareness In Conscious Organisms, Robert A. Dielenberg

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Self-awareness in conscious organisms remains an enduring puzzle for philosophers and neuroscientists. This paper proposes a tripartite evolutionary model tracing its emergence through three sequential types: the sensory self (primitive egocentric, valence-tagged awareness of sensory states), the bodily self (external objectification of the body as a distinct entity, evidenced by mirror self-recognition in select species), and the cognitive self (internal objectification of the mind enabling recursive self-transformation). Adopting a monist framework, the model treats consciousness as the biological substrate of delayed neural apperception (the “Delayed Present”), within which selves emerge as increasingly sophisticated models. It distinguishes non-human metacognition—implicit, online regulation—from …
