Measurement Of Run-Off And Soil Erosion By A Single Investigator, J. E. Weaver
Measurement Of Run-Off And Soil Erosion By A Single Investigator, J. E. Weaver
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
That run-off water and soil erosion have become problems of both local and national importance is widely recognized. In fact soil erosion over at least half of the United States has reached the proportions of a national menace. To study quantitatively the amount of run-off and erosion from different topographical areas and types of soil under various climates as well as the quantities of soil lost under different methods of cropping, terracing, etc., the government has established Federal erosion stations. These are located in various widely separated areas. The accumulated results obtained at these stations are now finding an important …
Quantity Of Living Plant Materials In Prairie Soils In Relation To Run-Off And Soil Erosion, J. E. Weaver, George W. Harmon
Quantity Of Living Plant Materials In Prairie Soils In Relation To Run-Off And Soil Erosion, J. E. Weaver, George W. Harmon
Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)
The menace of soil erosion did not appear in the west until much of the prairie was broken for cropping or weakened by continuous overgrazing. The grassland sod is a great conserver of rainfall; the amount of run-off water is relatively small, and the soil is firmly held against the forces of erosion. This study is concerned with the role that the living underground plant parts play in promoting the absorption of water by the soil, and especially their importance in reducing run-off. Their holding of the soil against the forces of water erosion has been experimentally determined. A study …

Effects Of Overgrazing On The Mortality Of Desert Browse Of The Utah West Desert, Charles W. Menzies
Effects Of Overgrazing On The Mortality Of Desert Browse Of The Utah West Desert, Charles W. Menzies
Theses and Dissertations
During the summer of 1934 this investigation was conducted to determine the effect of overgrazing on the mortality of desert browse in the vicinity of the Desert Range Branch experiment station. Range lands of western United States have, as a whole been subjected to overgrazing. Utah has about 24 million acres of public acres of public domain that can only be utilized from grazing. An effort has been made to put this area under control. The "Taylor Grazing Act" passed by Congress June 28, 1934 is a big step in the direction of the control of this vast area of …

Notes On The Owls Found In Lincoln County, Nebraska, Wilson Tout
Papers in Ornithology
During more than a quarter of a century I have been making notes and collecting information about the Owls of Lincoln county and it seemed an opportune time to put this information into print that it might be available to those who are interested in birds and serve as a basis for further study and amplification. Lincoln County is not usually considered a favorable place for Owls to reside on account of the absence of heavy timber over most of its area. But the nine varieties listed will probably be extended as more observations are made by those who are …

Probolitrema Tomalis Sp. Nov. (Trematoda) From Dasyatis Dipterura And Brachylaemus Virginianus (Dickerson) (Trematoda) From Didelphys Virginiana, Elsie Mae Graves
Probolitrema Tomalis Sp. Nov. (Trematoda) From Dasyatis Dipterura And Brachylaemus Virginianus (Dickerson) (Trematoda) From Didelphys Virginiana, Elsie Mae Graves
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
The genus Probolitrema was established by Looss (1901) in recognition of the location of vitellaria and multiple testes entirely outside the extra caecal field in Anaporrhutum richardii Lopez (1888) which differentiated it from A.albidum Ofenheim (1900) with the vitellaria within and the testes partly within and partly without the intra-caecal field. Ofenhein had created the genus Anaporrhutum for the above two species because of their multiple testes. A.albidum was a new species described by him; his A.richiardii Lopez specimens he considered to be the same species as Distomum richiardii Lopez, described in detail by Monticelli in 1893. Looss pointed out …

Bulletin No. 251 - Apricot Varieties, Francis M. Coe
Bulletin No. 251 - Apricot Varieties, Francis M. Coe
UAES Bulletins
While this publication has as its primary purpose the presentation of data as a progress report on the apricot variety testing work of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, study of the apricot varieties being grown in the state and of the literature showed such a confusion of varietal nomenclature in orchards, nurseries, and even in the literature on apricot varieties, that it was considered desirable to review the literature and to describe the varieties at hand more completely than is usual with a report of this kind in the hope that by so doing the apricot variety situation might be …

Molasses-Agar: A Useful Medium For The Cultivation Of The Genus Monilia, Hardy A. Kemp, Sol Haberman
Molasses-Agar: A Useful Medium For The Cultivation Of The Genus Monilia, Hardy A. Kemp, Sol Haberman
Field and Laboratory
Species of the genus Monilia are easily cultivated between the temperatures of 22°C and 38°C on solid media of slightly acid reaction. After cultivating stock strains of Monilia albicans and Monilia psilosis on Sabouraud's medium, honey agar, and molasses agar, it was found that molasses agar afforded the best means for cultivating these Oosporaceae.

Biometrical Study Of Goniobasis Comalensis Pilsbry From Two Diverse Habitats, Elmer P. Cheatum, E. D. Mouzon, Jr.
Field and Laboratory
Much has been written on the part played by the environment in changing secondary characters of the more plastic invertebrates….During February, 1934, a collecting trip was made to San Marcos, Texas, where two contrasting aquatic habitats were found, both of which were inhabited by the branchiate snail Goniobasis comalensis. Several hundred individuals were collected from each habitat, the shells measured, and a statistical study made of size differences.
Collecting Fossil Elephants At Dallas, Texas, Ellis W. Shuler
Collecting Fossil Elephants At Dallas, Texas, Ellis W. Shuler
Field and Laboratory
That man was co-existent with the mastodon and mammoth in Europe is well established. Many geologists and archaeologists are convinced that man lived in North America during the Pleistocene but the belief is by no means universal. Certainly the archaeologist has a definite interest in the search for fossil elephants and for any evidence of their association with man….Elephants were widespread and numerous in Texas during the Pleistocene.
Rainfall On The Western Front During The World War, Edwin J. Foscue
Rainfall On The Western Front During The World War, Edwin J. Foscue
Field and Laboratory
Within the last fifty years many attempts have been made to produce rain by artificial means, but all have resulted in failures. The unusually dry summer of 1934 in central United States, from North Dakota to Texas, produced a new group of rainmakers and rain-making experiments. The details of their plans differed somewhat, but all worked on the so-called "concussion theory" that the detonation of high explosives in the upper atmosphere would produce rain. In each case claims were supported by the commonly accepted statement that rain always followed battles, and that the unusually heavy rain in France along the …
