Further Observations On The Sex-Ratios Of Terrestrial Isopods, S. W. Geiser Nov 1934

Further Observations On The Sex-Ratios Of Terrestrial Isopods, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

Vandel contends that in terrestrial isopods the females are more numerous than males in collections. He gives tables showing the sex-ratios of collections of ten species…. Although Vandel finds that the sex-ratios of adult collections are one-sided in favor of the female sex, he nevertheless finds that in cultures of the species which he made, the sexes were about equally represented at birth, and in young populations. This accords with the findings of the present writer, who found the sexes approximately equal in very young populations of Armadillidium vulgare and Porcellio laevis.

That First Texas Botanist, S. W. Geiser Nov 1934

That First Texas Botanist, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

Winkler, in his useful account of botanical investigations in Texas, states (p. 5) that Jean Louis Berlandier, a French botanist in the employ of the Mexican Government, was the first to explore Texas botanically, while connected (1828) with the Comision de Limites under General Mier y Teran. In the present writer's own published studies, this statement was repeated, since the collections of Dr. Edwin James while a member of Long's Rocky Mountain Expedition (1819-20) were made in territory not a part of the historic province of Texas, but of Chihuahua, as maps of the period will show. In the modern …

The Blanton Student Observatory, John D. Boon Nov 1934

The Blanton Student Observatory, John D. Boon

Field and Laboratory

All of the large observatories, that have been constructed in recent years, are located in high and dry altitudes where the sky is almost always clear and the atmosphere is steady. It is a useless waste of money to locate a large telescope where climatic conditions are unfavorable…. The situation is quite different when it comes to the construction of small student observatories such as are found on the campus of many of the universities. Every city as large as Dallas, no matter what the atmospheric conditions may be, should have one or more small observatories where students may learn …

Forest Fire Damage Studies In The Northeast--I. Bark-Beetles And Fire Damaged Hardwoods, Paul W. Stickel Oct 1934

Forest Fire Damage Studies In The Northeast--I. Bark-Beetles And Fire Damaged Hardwoods, Paul W. Stickel

The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography

In reporting the damage to trees scorched lightly at the base by fire the average fire warden and even the technically trained forester is given to stating that little harm has been done providing the tree crowns remain green. Such a statement is far from being correct, failing as it does to take into account the aftermath of insect and fungus damage which invariably follows even the lightest of surface fires. In the case reported herein, over 50 per cent of the fire-scorched hardwoods showed signs of the presence of ambrosia-beetles, whose work, even if the trees continue to live, …

Stability Of Climax Prairie And Some Environmental Changes Resulting From Breaking, J. E. Weaver, Evan Flory Oct 1934

Stability Of Climax Prairie And Some Environmental Changes Resulting From Breaking, J. E. Weaver, Evan Flory

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Continued study of the great midcontinental grasslands of North America throughout a period of years has impressed the writers with the high degree of stability of the climax prairie. This phenomenon has been carefully considered in a study of the types of prairie in the Missouri Valley over an area of several thousand square miles centering in eastern Nebraska but including five neighboring states. Present studies on the deterioration of the prairie under the impact of grazing, and changes in edaphic and atmospheric environment with the breaking and cropping of the land have further emphasized the stabilizing influence of a …

The Effect Of A Controlled Nitrogen Supply With Different Temperatures And Photoperiods Upon The Development Of The Potato Plant, H. O. Werner Sep 1934

The Effect Of A Controlled Nitrogen Supply With Different Temperatures And Photoperiods Upon The Development Of The Potato Plant, H. O. Werner

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The potato (Solanum tuberosum Linn.) is grown under a great variety of conditions with regard to temperature, length of day, intensity and character of light, texture, fertility, and moisture of soil, and atmospheric humidity. There is need for a better understanding concerning the internal response of the potato plant to these external conditions when they are applied, either singly or in combination with each other, and the resulting morphological response, especially with regard to the tuberization process. It has been the object of this investigation to determine the relation of the nitrogen supply to the processes of stolon and …
