Weed Control In Lawns And Gardens, Leonard L. Schrader, Soloman Cook Mar 1951

Weed Control In Lawns And Gardens, Leonard L. Schrader, Soloman Cook

SDSU Extension Circulars

Weeds. are a problem in the city, small town and around the farm home, just as they are a problem in pastures, hay lands and tilled fields. Wherever weeds grow, they are an unsightly and expensive nuisance. In the vacant or untended lots m town, weeds become the source of seed that will spread to surrounding gardens, lawns and farm fields. Hampered vision at intersections, caused by rank-growing weeds, has contributed to many traffic accidents. In addition, they sap the soil's fertility, which probably is sent up in smoke when the weeds are burned in the fall. In gardens, they …

The Female Genitalia And Spermathecae Of Some Of The Rhynchophora, Herman O. Sanders Mar 1951

The Female Genitalia And Spermathecae Of Some Of The Rhynchophora, Herman O. Sanders

Theses and Dissertations

In this study of the genitalia and spermathecae of the Rhynohophora, eighty-two species, representing sixty genera, were examined as listed in Leng's Catalogue of Coleoptera of North America North of Mexico, together with seven species from the Phillippine Islands and one from China. By using the external female genitalia and spermathecae the Rhynochophora studied may be divided into eight and possibly nine well-defined groups. They are separated into these groups on the basis of the development of the nodulus and ramus and upon the degree of crenulation that occurs in the spermatheca. The spermatheca of all species studied has been …

Hairy Vetch For Nebraska, T. H. Goodding

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Circulars

Hairy vetch is a winter annual legume. It may be planted either in the spring or fall. Hairy vetch often succeeds on soils where sweet clover and alfalfa fail. It is more tolerant to acid (lime-deficient) soils than most leguminous crops.

A Preliminary Investigation Of The Species Of Water Mites Of The United States Rocky Mountain Region And Vicinity Of Albuquerque, New Mexico, David W. Bergstrom

Biology ETDs

The primary purpose of this research problem is to give a preliminary accounting of the species of Hydracarina or water mites found at several mountain localities in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, and New Mexico. In general, since the collecting was confined to altitudes above 4500 feet, the results of this problem constitute a survey of some of the highest forms of water mites of the United States.

Notes On The Agave Feeders Of The Genus Megathymus (Lepidopter Rhopalocera, Megathymidae), H. A. Freeman Jan 1951

Notes On The Agave Feeders Of The Genus Megathymus (Lepidopter Rhopalocera, Megathymidae), H. A. Freeman

Field and Laboratory

Life histories of most of the species of Megathymus long have been associated with the genus Yucca; but John A. Comstock & Charles M. Dammers found that Megathymus stephensi Skinner has as its food plant a certain species of the genus Agave (Bull. So. Calif. Acad. Sci., XXXIII, 1934). Later, it was found that another species of Megathymus feeds in the larval stage upon agave. Although I have been unable to find any published note on the feeding of Megathymus mariae B.&B. upon Agave lecheguilla Torrey, lepidopterists have known this fact for a considerable time. There remain four species of …

Increase Of Poison-Bitterweed (Hymenoxys Odorata) On Texas Range Lands, V. L. Cory Jan 1951

Increase Of Poison-Bitterweed (Hymenoxys Odorata) On Texas Range Lands, V. L. Cory

Field and Laboratory

This paper, as read before the Texas Academy of Science, was titled "Increase of Native Weedy Forbs on Texas Range Lands." The reason for the change of title here is that, from a range standpoint, not all forbs are weeds and not all weeds are forbs. Forbs are herbaceous plants that are not grasses or grass-like plants. Some of the forbs are toxic to livestock or so unpalatable to them they feed upon them only when excessively hungry or starving. In reality some of these range forbs are forage plants and some are not.

The Texas Species Of Psoralea (Leguminosae), Lloyd H. Shinners Jan 1951

The Texas Species Of Psoralea (Leguminosae), Lloyd H. Shinners

Field and Laboratory

Twenty-five species and two varieties of Psoralea, dis tributed among three segregate genera, were recognized from Texas by Rydberg (1919) and by Tharp and Barkley (1945, 1946). Fourteen species and four varieties, of which one species and three varieties are newly described, are recognized in the present synopsis, all treated under Psoralea. For the most part the dismemberment of the genus is entirely reasonable as far as Texas species are concerned.
