Forest Fires In The Northern Rocky Mountains, J S. Barrows Jan 1951

Forest Fires In The Northern Rocky Mountains, J S. Barrows

The Bark Beetles, Fuels, and Fire Bibliography

This is a report on an analysis of 36,000 forest fires in the northern Rocky Mountains. The analysis was made to gain a better understanding of the occurrence, behavior, control, and effects of fires, and in turn to obtain essential information required for improved planning and management of fire protection systems. The results present answers to these questions: 1) What is the magnitude of the regional fire problem? 2) What are the basic features of fire behavior under various topographic, fuel, and weather conditions? 3) What have been the results of organized fire control programs including fire prevention, detection, communication, …

Bulletin No. 350 - Cemeteries Of Box Elder And Summit Counties, Joseph A. Geddes, Carmen Fredrickson Jan 1951

Bulletin No. 350 - Cemeteries Of Box Elder And Summit Counties, Joseph A. Geddes, Carmen Fredrickson

UAES Bulletins

One of man's greatest challenges is to build institutions that adequately meet basic needs. A cemetery is a social institution invented to take care of needs related to the dead.

Times and conditions change. A design which seemed adequate when initiated may soon become archaic and out-moded if it is not modified in the light of new discoveries.

This study raises many issues about cemeteries. As one reads the bulletin many questions concerning the nature and function of other institutions arise. What is their condition in contrast with the cemeteries?

This publication, the first in an institution series planned by …

Comparisons are made with equivalent neutron treatments of maize pollen, results of which have been reported in part in previous publications.

Cinderella Furniture, Isabel Mcgibney Jan 1951

Cinderella Furniture, Isabel Mcgibney

SDSU Extension Circulars

With an elaborate gilt coach that had once been a pumpkin, and glass slippers that didn't disclose their former identity, a common colorless girl became a famous storybook beauty. With a wave of the magic legendary wand, the good fairy transformed the unattractive into the desirable, the ugly into the beautiful and the rundown into the useful. Today a woman is her own fairy. The magic wand that makes the old as good as new is imagination, ingenuity and know-how. Like the two chairs on the cover that Mrs. Homemaker proudly shows her family, the unattractive chair has completely changed …

Effect Of Low Temperature On The Germination Of Artificially Dried Seed Corn, J. E. Livingston Jan 1951

Effect Of Low Temperature On The Germination Of Artificially Dried Seed Corn, J. E. Livingston

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Soil pathogens were primarily responsible for the reduction in emergence of corn seedlings following the cold treatment. The susceptibility of the seedlings to soil pathogens was much greater when the seedlings were exposed to a soil temperature of 5° C for 7 to 14 days than when they were held continuously at 20° C. Seedling emergence was in inverse relation to kernel moisture content at time of harvest. Artificial drying of the seed intensified this effect, particularly in nonsterile soil. Treatment of the seed with Arasan prior to planting completely eliminated the effect of soil pathogens on seedling emergence either …

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Xiii. The Effect Of Additions Of Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal To High Corn Chick Rations, C. W. Ackerson, R. L. Borchers, F. E. Mussehl Jan 1951

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Xiii. The Effect Of Additions Of Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal To High Corn Chick Rations, C. W. Ackerson, R. L. Borchers, F. E. Mussehl

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Feeding trials were conducted on three groups of chicks in eight lots receiving a growing mash containing dehydrated alfalfa meal at levels of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, and 15 per cent. Comparisons were not made simultaneously but no general trend toward growth depression was evident in comparable lots. In addition duplicate trials of four lots of newly hatched New Hampshire chicks were made on pelleted rations carrying 0, 2, 4, and 6 per cent of a good quality dehydrated alfalfa meal. The chicks were all fed accurately known amounts of the pelleted rations for six weeks. …

A Study Of Bovine Noseprints, Morris W. Hirsch Jan 1951

A Study Of Bovine Noseprints, Morris W. Hirsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The breed association are continuously confronted with the problem of properly identifying animals for registration. The method of identifying the broken color breeds, such as Guernseys, Holsteins, and Ayrshires, is by a sketch of the color patterns which accompanies the application for registration. This has been fairly successful, but due to the poor drawing ability of the applicant approximately twenty percent of animal markings and sketch do not resemble each other to establish identity. The solid colored breeds use brands or tattoo marks in the ear which are not entirely satisfactory since these are artificial and can be applied in …

The Affect Of Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Fission Rate Of Paramecium Caudatum, Margherita L. Baker Jan 1951

The Affect Of Indole-3-Acetic Acid On The Fission Rate Of Paramecium Caudatum, Margherita L. Baker

Student Scholarship

This research report, authored by Margherita L. Baker in 1951, investigates the physiological effects of the plant growth hormone indole-3-acetic acid, also known as heteroauxin, on the fission rate of the protozoan Paramecium caudatum. The study is grounded in the hypothesis that if plant hormones can influence animal growth, it suggests a fundamental similarity in the growth mechanisms between the two kingdoms. The experimental procedure was divided into two distinct series to observe how varying environmental conditions and food availability influenced the hormonal impact.

In the first series, paramecia were maintained in a nutrient-rich beef extract medium with an abundant …

The Bionomics Of The Culicidae Of The Dallas Area, Ottis L. Mccleskey Jan 1951

The Bionomics Of The Culicidae Of The Dallas Area, Ottis L. Mccleskey

Field and Laboratory

Little work has been done on Texan mosquitoes. In 1922 Dyar listed 43 species from Texas, 10 of which were recorded from near Dallas. Cushing (1934) listed the mosquitoes of Brazos County. McGregor & Eads (1934) in their work on the mosquitoes of Texas, divided the State into 17 approximately equal areas. They gave a total list of 54 species, of which 19 were reported from the area that included Dallas County. Fisk & LeVan (1941) published notes on the mosquitoes of Brownsville. The State Health Department of Texas published (1944) a booklet, "The Mosquitoes of Texas", which is the …

Distributional Notes On The Theclinae Of Arkansas, H. A. Freeman

Field and Laboratory

During the past 24 years I have collected rather thoroughly over the state of Arkansas, and found 12 species of hairstreaks in four genera represented there. Their local habits show that they are most likely indigenous. All of the present information is first-hand, except that on Incisalia irus (Godart), which was furnished by Mr. Paul McHenry of El Dorado, Ark.

The Sedimentation Rate Of Potato Yellow-Dwarf Virus, M. K. Brakke, L. M. Black, Ralph W. G. Wyckoff

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

BLACK et al. (1948) have published electron micrographs of bodies believed to represent the New York variety of potato yellow-dwarf virus (Aureogenus vastans (H) Black) (Holmes 1948). The photographs showed bodies in several different extracts of infected plants of Nicotiana rustica L., but not in corresponding preparations from healthy plants. Similar bodies were found in concentrates from plants infected with the New Jersey variety of the virus (var. agalliae Black). These bodies were larger than, and of a different character from, those of plant viruses hitherto examined in the electron microscope. The present study was undertaken to obtain evidence …

Enemies Of Aspen, Clyde M. Christensen, Ralph L. Anderson, A. C. Hodson, Paul O. Rudolf Jan 1951

Enemies Of Aspen, Clyde M. Christensen, Ralph L. Anderson, A. C. Hodson, Paul O. Rudolf

Aspen Bibliography

So long as aspen was considered primarily a weed species, there was little concern over the enemies which might injure or destroy it. Sometimes these enemies were actually considered "blessings in disguise. Now, however, that aspen not only is the most abundant "but also one of the most widely utilized tree species in the Lake States, there is increasing interest in anything that may affect its future supply. For that reason this brief summary of information on the enemies of aspen has been assembled.
