The Biosystematic Problem, Robert W. Long Jr. Jan 1954

The Biosystematic Problem, Robert W. Long Jr.

Field and Laboratory

The new approach to taxonomy, variously called "The New Systematics", "Experimental Taxonomy", or “Biosystematics", is now a recognized branch of biology. The growth of this new approach during the past three decades has not only renewed interest in taxonomy among taxonomists, but has also demonstrated to the other disciplines of biological science the implications of taxonomic research to their work. The purpose of the present paper is to review briefly the methods and purposes of the biosystematists in the hope that study of this kind may be encouraged in the Southwest. In this region, problems of species that lend themselves …

Plankton Studies Of The Tomales Bay, California, Andrew William Mcclain Jan 1954

Plankton Studies Of The Tomales Bay, California, Andrew William Mcclain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

These studies on the plankton of Tomales Bay were designed to determine the effects of such physical factors as tides, temperatures, salinities and sunshine on the quantities of various types of organisms, and to obtain a more comprehensive picture of estuarine life at the Pacific Marine Station. The studies were begun in the summer of 1948 and continued through the summer of 1953.

Although various studies have been conducted on different aspects of marine plankton, the only general treatments of the subject of which the writer is aware are those of Johnstone (1924), Ricketts and Calvin (1951), Sproaton (1949) and …

North American Prairie, J. E. Weaver Jan 1954

North American Prairie, J. E. Weaver

Papers of John E. Weaver (1884–1956)

TO MOST AMERICANS, the word "Prairie" suggests either a romantic element in pioneer fiction or a vast expanse of level land which must be crossed in going from one coast to another. But to the botanist, the American Prairie is a wonderfully complex society of living organisms.

This book tells the story of that society-the variety of its inhabitants; the constitution of its several communities; the internal struggles for domination of the society; and the battles of the Prairie as a whole against its two most vicious enemies, drought and overgrazing. Most striking, perhaps, is the story of that portion …

The Growth Of Pathogenic Bacteria In Soluble Oil Emulsions, Hilliard Pivnik, W.E. Engelhard, T.L. Thompson Jan 1954

The Growth Of Pathogenic Bacteria In Soluble Oil Emulsions, Hilliard Pivnik, W.E. Engelhard, T.L. Thompson

Papers in Microbiology

Mineral oils, when emulsified with materials such as soaps of petroleum sulfonates, fatty acids, abietic acid or resin, are referred to as soluble oils. These oils, mixed with water, form stable emulsions which are universally employed as coolants and lubricants for drilling, cutting, and grinding of metals. In addition to the emulsifying agent, soluble oils may also contain fatty oils, disinfectants and emulsion stabilizers.
The oils supplied by the manufacturer are sterile, but when mixed with water in the machine shop they support microbial growth (Duffet et al., 1943; Fabian and Pivnick, 1953; Lee and Chandler, 1941; Page and Bushnell, …

Rb54-175 Farm Family Housing Needs And Preferences In Nebraska, Virginia Y. Trotter, Margaret I. Liston Jan 1954

Rb54-175 Farm Family Housing Needs And Preferences In Nebraska, Virginia Y. Trotter, Margaret I. Liston

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Some farm families in Nebraska want to build new houses. Many others are planning to remodel. These families will be asking architects, engineers, builders, contractors, and dealers for plans that meet their needs. Thus, farmhouse plans should be developed that provide for the basic needs of all farm families and that are adaptable to special requirements of some families.

This 1954 bulletin reports the results of a survey of Nebraska farm family preferences, activities and possessions as they are related to housing needs. The study was part of a cooperative research project for the improvement of farm family housing in …

How The Mud-Puppies Were Named, Joseph P. Harris Jr.

The many names under which the mud-puppies have been described or cited have caused some confusion. At least 33 'common" names and 29 scientific names have been given them at one time or another, not considering the names that have been applied to the species described since 1924.

The Treatment Of Decayed Wood From Dead Trembling Aspen Trees For Growth-Ring Analysis, Arthur W. Ghent Jan 1954

The Treatment Of Decayed Wood From Dead Trembling Aspen Trees For Growth-Ring Analysis, Arthur W. Ghent

Aspen Bibliography

This paper elaborates certain procedures briefly outlined in an earlier article. Although dry wood from dead trembling aspen has been found best suited to growth-ring analysis, in its absence use has been made of water-saturated wood from the underside of fallen trunks. A technique of wax impregnation, adaptable to wood in both early and advanced stages of decay, is described. Rapid impregnation with near-boiling wax is sufficient to facilitate transverse sectioning of relatively sound wood; advanced decays require a slower impregnation with cooler paraffin. Hot xylol is used to remove the wax and flatten the section. Successive, overlapped sections provide …

Thinning From Above Reduces Total Yields In Medium Site Aspen, Miron L. Heinselman

Aspen Bibliography

Early commercial thinnings "from above" in quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) may provide early returns from good sized bolts, but they result in lower total yields according to a study conducted by the Lake States Forest Experiment Station on the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota.

Feeding Minerals To Livestock Important, Lawrence B. Embry Jan 1954

Feeding Minerals To Livestock Important, Lawrence B. Embry

Agricultural Experiment Station Animal Husbandry Pamphlets

Minerals have many important functions in the body and their needs in livestock rations have been known for many years. Bone and teeth are composed chiefly of minerals which are necessary for their proper growth and development. In addition to these functions, minerals are necessary constituents of soft tissue and body fluids and play important roles in the regulation of body processes. In spite of the known need for minerals for a long time, much remains to be learned about specific requirements, mineral content of feeds, mineral balances and factors affecting these. It is recognized that the requirements of an …
