Modern Wear Needs Modern Care, Anna D. Walker Feb 1954

Modern Wear Needs Modern Care, Anna D. Walker

SDSU Extension Circulars

The modern homemaker has a bewildering number of new fibers, blends, mixtures, and new finishes for cotton and wool to choose from in clothing her family. How to care for each article of clothing so that it will stay attractive and wearable presents a real problem since so many fabrics and finishes are unfamiliar. In this circular we will discuss ( 1) care of fabrics made from the well known fibers which need to be handled differently because of new finishes, (2) care of fabrics made from the several man-made fibers, i.e.: rayon, acetate, nylon, orlon, acrilan, dynel, dacron and …

Bulletin No. 367 - Hybrid Corn Tests In Utah, Rollo W. Woodward, Rex F. Nielson Feb 1954

Bulletin No. 367 - Hybrid Corn Tests In Utah, Rollo W. Woodward, Rex F. Nielson

UAES Bulletins

The last summary of recommended corn hybrids published from this station was in 1939. Since that time there ha been a complete change of corn hybrid being tested and a considerable increase in both acreage and yield throughout the state. Corn used a silage is one of the most productive feed crop that can be grown on the irrigated land of the state. Under favorable moisture and fertility condition , hybrid corn can give outstanding yield of shelled corn per acre. At the present time only about one-sixth of the total corn acreage is devoted to grain, the bulk being …

Fertilizer Recommendations For S.D. Crops, Leo F. Puhr, Fred E. Shubeck, Leonard L. Ladd, Merle E. Switzer

SDSU Extension Circulars

The use of fertilizer is rapidly becoming recognized as an essential part of a good soil management program. Fertilizers, however, are not a substitute for other well established soil management practices. A good rotation is the foundation of a sound fertility and soil building program. Commercial fertilizer should be used to correct the plant food deficiencies that normally occur under our best soil management systems. It should be emphasized that the fullest use be made of legumes and grasses, crop residues and. manure to maintain the organic matter supply of the soil and to reduce the amount of fertilizer required …

The Influence Of Locust Bean Gum On The Strength Characteristics Of Handsheets Under Varying Ph Conditions. A Study Of The Effect Of Alum Or Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Robert J. Witters Feb 1954

The Influence Of Locust Bean Gum On The Strength Characteristics Of Handsheets Under Varying Ph Conditions. A Study Of The Effect Of Alum Or Hydrogen Ion Concentration, Robert J. Witters

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

A literature survey concerning the addition of locust bean gum to beaten pulp and the resulting strength characteristics imparted to handsheets through the addition of the gum has been undertaken. Although much literature can be found, hardly any detailed information can be extracted on the effect of alum or hydrogen ion concentration. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to draw some conclusion, through laboratory work, as to any possible change, due to pH or alum, in the strength characteristics of handsheets containing locust bean gum.

The first part of this thesis will be a brief review of work that …

Agricultural Production Trends In South Dakota, Robert J. Antonides Jan 1954

Agricultural Production Trends In South Dakota, Robert J. Antonides

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Many South Dakotans who are concerned with agriculture in the State have been interested in obtaining some means of comparing agricultural production over the years. Total income from agricultural products sold gives a very rough estimate of trends, but does not take into account the many other farm products which are not sold but used on the farm. The indexes presented here account for all of the output of the farms of South Dakota with the exception of some very minor crops and farm gardens. The present study is the first attempt to combine all of the various types of …

The genus Perdita forms one of the most interesting groups of bees of the North American fauna, and is one to which the author has devoted much attention during the last twenty-five years. The privilege of examining specimens of Perdita belonging to the United States National Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, the California Academy of Sciences, the University of California, and the University of Kansas is gratefully acknowledged, as well as the help of many individuals, who during this time have placed their specimens at the author's disposal. Special mention should be made of J. C. Bridwell, J. …

Taxation In South Dakota: A Preliminary Report, Max Myers, John E. Thompson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The demands for tax-supported services in South Dakota are ever increasing while the tax receipts to finance such services are not increasing accordingly. The upward trend in the cost of education highway and public welfare programs are primo examples of the additional revenue requirements. Methods of financing these programs and the effect of financial policies on those paying the tax bills will be the subject of this report. Voters and state legislators need to know the effects of alternative programs for collecting and spending state revenues. In this report an attempt will be made to point out the major services …

Choice of an insecticide treatment to be used on a legume seed crop in bloom should be determined by its hazard o bees as well as its economic effectiveness in controlling harmful insects. This is true not only because bees provide the cross-pollination essential to high yield of quality seed but also because most beekeepers still depend on a honey crop for their living.

In 1947 the staff of the U.S. Legume Seed Research Laboratory at Logan, Utah, initiated a study to ascertain which of the principal new organic insecticides could be applied to seed alfalfa in bloom without creating …

Selection Of Pumping Equipment For Irrigation, Martin Fogel

SDSU Extension Circulars

A correctly designed pump irrigation installation, used under proper conditions and with good management, can be a profitable practice in the most parts of South Dakota. It is the intention of this publication to briefly discuss the equipment that goes into a pumping plant. By so ding, potential users of this equipment will have some indication of the operating costs of the various units as well as the type of equipment that is best suited to his particular conditions.

The Loss Of Some Strength Characteristics Of Coated Magazine Paper As A Result Of Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Hugh D. Burnie Jan 1954

The Loss Of Some Strength Characteristics Of Coated Magazine Paper As A Result Of Exposure To Elevated Temperatures, Hugh D. Burnie

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Introduction

The purpose of this work is to investigate the effect that varying degrees of temperature have on the strength properties of coated magazine stock. Paper of this type encounters high temperature conditions primarily in the ink drying operations following the printing of the web. The strength with which the paper meets the cutting, folding and binding methods which follow the drying operation are of paramount importance to the printer. Throughout the work, attempts were made to assimilate conditions encountered in present day commercial practice.

A New Experimental Pulp Digester Installation With Separate Steam Supply, Andre L. Breton

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Part I

Literature Survey

Up to now, few articles have been written on the subject of Experimental Pulp Digester Installations. In our searches we have been able to find information concerning only The Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada in Montreal, P.Q., Canada, The Chemical Pulp Experimental Department of the Central Laboratory in Finland, and a sulfite digester for research and instruction at the University of Washington at Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.

Acid Treatment Of Pulp At Different Temperatures And The Resultant Change In Pulp Characteristics, Kent Dickerman

Paper Engineering Senior Theses

Literature Survey

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the acid treatment of pulp at different temperatures. In the experimental work, enough sulfuric acid is used to neutralize the mixture of pulp and water and thereafter reach in the pH range of one and eight tenths to two at atmospheric pressure. Temperatures during experimentation range from room temperature to 100° Centigrade.
