The “Sternum” In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
The “Sternum” In Necturus, Joseph P. Harris Jr.
Field and Laboratory
Recently, in order to arrive at a satisfactory answer to a moot question on the anatomy of the urodele, Necturus, I dissected 8 males and 5 females (varying in length from 25 to 39 centimeters). The problem involved was the existence or non-existence of cartilaginous inscriptiones tendineae in the myocommata of the ventral pectoral region; and the further question as to whether these cartilaginous elements, if generally found, are to be considered metamerized rudiments or sternebrae that have been arrested in their development (or, more loosely, constitute an ontogenetically-arrested sternum).
Populations Of Linaria (Scrophulariaceae) In Northeastern Texas, Robert Kral
Populations Of Linaria (Scrophulariaceae) In Northeastern Texas, Robert Kral
Field and Laboratory
Two native species of Linaria (L. texana Scheele and L. canadensis (L.) Dumort. occur in Texas. The former is common on sandy to sandy clay loams nearly throughout the state; the latter is confined to sandy sites in the central and eastern counties. Both are abundant in recently abandoned fields in east Texas. Mass-collections were made during March and April of 1955, totalling 335 plants (207 L. texana, 128 L. canadensis) in 8 counties of northeastern Texas. Numbers of individuals taken ranged from 3 to 47 at each of 21 locations. Seven contained both species, 4 only L. canadensis, 10 …

A Laboratory Experiment Involving Paper-Chromatography And Statistics, Charles T. Kenner, Joan Schneider
Field and Laboratory
This article suggests a paper chromatographic separation of the dyes in commercial black inks, which has been designed for completion in one 3-hour laboratory period with the use of equipment and solvents found in practically all laboratories. The experiment gives very satisfactory results, and allows the student to become familiar with the general field of paper chromatography and some of the factors which affect Rf values of constituents of mixtures. It also may be used to demonstrate the use of simple statistical tests, if desired.

Fall Distribution Of Birds In A Palouse River Canyon, Frank B. Golley, Paul A. Johnsgard
Fall Distribution Of Birds In A Palouse River Canyon, Frank B. Golley, Paul A. Johnsgard
Paul Johnsgard Collection
During the fall and winter of 1953 the writers undertook a general ecological study of a portion of the Palouse River valley, near Armstrong, Whitman County, Washington. During the course of these investigations records were kept on the numbers of birds observed and the vegetation in which they were located. It was anticipated that these observations might indicate bird-use of the major vegetational types found in the area. Several investigators (Dumas 1950; Wing 1949) have published distributional data for birds of the Palouse grassland during the nesting, period, but few have been concerned with distribution patterns during the fall migration.

A Floristic Comparison Of Two Hillside Bog Localities In Northeastern Texa, Robert Kral
A Floristic Comparison Of Two Hillside Bog Localities In Northeastern Texa, Robert Kral
Field and Laboratory
The purpose of this study has been to determine the plant species of two bogs in northeastern Texas, on similar geological deposits under similar conditions of rainfall, temperature, and growing season, and to determine the extent of floristic similarity. The two bogs selected lie approximately 65 miles apart. Both are small areas sub-oval in outline, fed by hillside seepage, and drained by small streams which flow roughly southwest.

Parapholis Incurva And Chloris Polydactyla In Texas, Frank W. Gould
Field and Laboratory
The establishment of the grass Parapholis incurva (L.) C. E. Hubb. along the Gulf Coast of Texas has been brought to the attention of the writer by recent collections at Port Arthur, Jefferson County (W. J. Waldrip 139), and High Island, Chambers County (F. W. Gould 6770). By coincidence the two collections were made the same day, April 19, 1955, on independent field excursions by members of the Texas A. & M. College, Department of Range and Forestry.

The Cassia Fasciculata Complex (Leguminosae) In Texas, B. L. Turner
The Cassia Fasciculata Complex (Leguminosae) In Texas, B. L. Turner
Field and Laboratory
The genus Cassia is represented in Texas by 15 well-marked species. One of these, C. fasciculata, is a highly variable taxon composed of several intergrading infraspecific taxa. The following treatment is the result of several summers' field work combined with distributional data and morphological study of herbarium material. In the present paper it has been necessary to make two new varietal combinations in C. fasciculata. Hence, in conformity with Article 17 of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature (1952), it seems desirable to give a somewhat detailed account of the distributional and morphological evidence which leads the author to treat …
A List Of Cestode Parasites From California Mammals, Marietta Voge
A List Of Cestode Parasites From California Mammals, Marietta Voge
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
This report brings together information on the occurrence and distribution of cestode parasites in California mammals. The original information reported herein, was obtained by students, myself, and other staff members of this university. Although the host-parasite list which follows is far from complete, the dearth of knowledge about the helminth fauna in California seems to justify the publication of relatively few data, in the hope that other workers will be able to use this list as a starting point and add to it.
With few exceptions, the common names of the hosts, as given in the host list, were obtained …

Bulletin No. 378 - Labor Structure And Labor Problems: Utah Sheep Ranches, 1952-1953, William A. Dehart, William H. Metzler
UAES Bulletins
This study deals with the problem sheep ranchers have in recruiting workers to meet their labor needs. Consideration is given to the composition of the work force on sheep ranches, to wages, the amount and causes of labor turnover, and to ways to reduce turnover. Labor recruitment practices are also discussed and evaluated in terms of available sources of farm labor, the possibilities of maintaining a stable supply, and the effect of farm labor problems on recent changes in the operations of sheep ranch enterprises. The primary focus of attention is on regular hired labor on Utah sheep ranches, although …
