A Rapid Volumetric Analysis For Carbonate In Rocks, Eugene Herrin, H. Sterling Hicks, Herbert Robertson Oct 1958

A Rapid Volumetric Analysis For Carbonate In Rocks, Eugene Herrin, H. Sterling Hicks, Herbert Robertson

Field and Laboratory

Rapid, accurate analyses for the CO3 content of carbonate rocks may be made by allowing a known amount of the rock to react with a measured quantity of standard H2SO4 and then determining the amount of acid which remains by back-titration with standard NaOH. The technique is faster and more accurate than the leaching method and, more important, allows the analyst to determine directly the CO3 content. Very accurate analyses for CO3 in limestones may be made by potiometric titration methods, but quite satisfactory results are obtained using phenolphthalein as an indicator. As is the case with igneous rocks, the …

Men Of Science In Texas, 1820-1880, S. W. Geiser Oct 1958

Men Of Science In Texas, 1820-1880, S. W. Geiser

Field and Laboratory

Recently there came back into my hands a lent-and forgotten-dossier of 1929 correspondence with Swiss and German universities and libraries-a correspondence dealing with the Swiss naturalist, Jacob Boll, who spent the last years of his life in Texas. His life, with that of other naturalists, is sketched in my Naturalists of the Frontier (1937, 1948). Such a recovery reminds one of the passing of time, and a long-made promise to put into print an account of the men of science (sit venia verbo) of Early Texas. Most of them were men of other trades, professions, what-you-will, of good amateur standing; …

Native Grassland Of Southwestern Iowa, J. E. Weaver Oct 1958

Native Grassland Of Southwestern Iowa, J. E. Weaver

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Studies of the prairie by the writer and Fitzpatrick during 1922-33 were both extensive and intensive. They were extensive in that they included an area of 60,000 sq. mi. in western Iowa, eastern Nebraska and portions of the four adjoining states. They were intensive in that a record of the kinds and distribution of grasses, the abundance and relative importance of forbs, and other pertinent data were ascertained and recorded separately for each of 135 selected areas. Since most of these prairies were examined two or more times each growing season, and many repeatedly during a five-year period, a clear, …

Climatic Variations In South Dakota 1900 - 1950, Robert M. Basile Sep 1958

Climatic Variations In South Dakota 1900 - 1950, Robert M. Basile

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Most of South Dakota lies within the Great Plains of the United States. Thus, the climate of South Dakota, like that of the Great Plains, has been one of relatively little precipitation and frequent droughts. However, periods of rather high rainfall have led to considerable optimism. Likewise droughts like those of the 1930's may have led to too much pessimism. What is the real picture of the variability of South Dakota climate? The purpose of this pamphlet is to help answer this question. No one knows with certainty what will happen in the future. The best indication of what can …

The South Dakota 4-H Automotive Project : Emphasizing Care And Safety, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College

SDSU Extension Circulars

You are invited to participate in the initial and very important stage of the automotive care and safety project. The project is being tested this first year in only a few selected counties in about thirty States. Your satisfactions and results in the months ahead will determine what the project will eventually become. A significant feature of the 4-H Club program is its potential for growth and expansion. The automotive care and safety project offers an example. Here real needs exist. The tremendous impact of the automotive age on our lives makes it imperative that we have more educational opportunities …

Marketing Northern Alfalfa Seed: A Progress Report, Dale C. Dahl Sep 1958

Marketing Northern Alfalfa Seed: A Progress Report, Dale C. Dahl

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Alfalfa seed has become a farm crop of increasing importance. Total hay acreage in the United States has remained practically unchanged during the past two decades, but alfalfa hay, during this period, has increased by over 100 percent. Accompanying this increased acreage in alfalfa hay, total alfalfa seed production for the United States has nearly tripled. In turn, the incomes of farmers engaged in alfalfa seed production have multiplied approximately three times during the past twenty years. Alfalfa seed is not a homogeneous product. For many years it has been agronomically grouped into "hardy" and "non-hardy" alfalfa seed. The term …

Natural History Of Thelazia Californiensis Price, 1930 (Nematoda: Thelaziidae), A Mammalian Eye Worm, Warren E. Parmelee Sep 1958

Natural History Of Thelazia Californiensis Price, 1930 (Nematoda: Thelaziidae), A Mammalian Eye Worm, Warren E. Parmelee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Various factors—embryology, host associations, and seasonal changes In eye worn populations—tending to promote the propagation of T. califomlensls were studied.

The early embryology closely parallels that of other nematode species.

The mature embryos remain alive in saline at 35°C as long as 5 days. Dead embryos can be distinguished from living ones by virtue of the rapid staining by methylene blue by the former. Parturient female thelazias release embryos into saline, and embryos are found regularly in tear secretions of infected laboratory rabbits.

Ovic embryos possess an enveloping egg membrane containing chitin. On this account, this eye worm species is …
